Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Weekend ~ 1.2 (#sixsunday @6_Sunday)

#1 of Six Sentences over six weeks from 'Wild West Weekend'

Showered and dressed in jeans, a white tank top and loose fitting tan safari shirt, she clipped her long hair back. Studying her reflection one way and then the other in the mirror, she double checked that everything was proper. Granted, she knew she was on a ranch and that the moment she walked out the door she probably wouldn’t look so put together anymore, but she couldn’t help it. Years of being in the public eye, needing to be presentable and checking and double checking her appearance was a force of habit. She was pretty sure Dak wouldn’t care one way or the other how she looked—he’d most likely rather see her naked—but she liked to look nice.
As she reached for the doorknob, a sudden bout of nervousness hit her.

Welcome special guest: author Morgan Kearns @MorganKearns

Today we have author, Morgan Kearns, visiting. Morgan survived the intense and ever-changing insanity of television news for nearly 10 years before retiring to enter the jungle of raising four children. She writes novels that are ‘a real page turner’ and ‘couldn’t put the book down’ reads.

* So, Morgan, what inspired you to become a writer?
An idea struck one day and I began writing down the story. It was my first attempt and I cringe at the thought of opening that manuscript because my writing style has changed substantially since then. I still love those characters, though, and hope to go back someday to finish writing their story so I can introduce them to the world.
* How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
Gosh, I don’t know. Fifteen? Twenty?
* What genre(s) do you write in?
Romance; Contemporary and Paranormal at this point. What drew you to write in it/them? I am a Happily-Ever-After kind of girl! If it (book, movie, whatever) doesn’t end in HEA, I’m not interested. J With that said, HEA is the definition of the romance genre. Well, okay, I guess we have to count Happily-For-Now as well. *shrugs* But usually there aren’t tears at the end of a romance novel unless it’s really, really happy—which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion. What’s your favorite genre of all to write in? That’s a tough one. I guess it would have to depend on which muse is speaking at the time, then he’s definitely my favorite be he vampire, shifter, or plain ol’ hot-blooded, sexy man!
* What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Best advice? I’d have to say “write what you know”. Yes, it’s cliché, but it’s so very true. One of the biggest compliments I get from readers of Fade to Black and In It To Win It is that they love the realism of the newsroom. I couldn’t have done that without having lived it. My advice: if you can’t live it, then do your research. The worst advice I ever got actually came from my eighth grade English teacher: You probably shouldn’t write. Now, that’s probably not what she really said, but that was my interpretation of her grading techniques. I didn’t write for over 20 years after that. I’m so very glad I didn’t listen to her advice.
* How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
Rejection is part of exposing yourself. It’s never easy to have someone say no. I actually have a file folder where rejection letters go. Some of them have actually given me a laugh. For example: An agent sent me a form letter with a flyer for his book that I could purchase for $19.99 plus s/h. No, I didn’t buy it. Acceptance? That’s easy…We par-tay down! Even my kids do a happy-dance. *grins*
* In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
Grayson could be played by Alex O’Loughlin or George Eads, but they’d need a goatee. Jane could be played by Kiera Knightley, maybe? Or Hillary Duff when she has dark hair?  If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts? Molly could be played by Anna Faris, Xavier could be played by Colin Farrell, Nate? *shrugs* I don’t know. I’ve tried to give him a famous persona and just can’t do it. Nate Hughes is truly one of a kind. LOL!
* The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
IN IT TO WIN IT is technically a stand-alone. However, there are characters that carry over from my debut novel, Fade to Black. And coming sometime late next spring there will be a follow up with characters from In It To Win It. Xavier gets his own story and oh, it’s an interesting one! There are spoilers for Fade to Black in IN IT TO WIN IT, though.
*** Now for some fun info… ***
* Are you a cat, dog or both kind of person?
Dog. I love their loyalty. Our family dog is an English Bulldog named Gus. He is the greatest dog ever! Especially when he tries to fit his 90lb body in my lap to snuggle. *grin*
* Are you a morning person or night owl?
Night owl. I love the quiet at night after all the kids have gone to bed. If I have a project due, I’ll stay up all night rather than get up early. Thank heaven for caffeine!
* What’s your favorite day of the week?
Any day I get to sleep past 7:00am. *laughs*

*** About Morgan’s books… ***
In It To Win It was initially written in about two weeks for a contest. In its original form it was less than 25,000 words. When I sent it off I hoped that it wouldn’t be accepted because there was so much that didn’t get told. How often does an author hope for rejection as soon as they enter their submission? Yep, I’m nuts! Thankfully, I got the “thanks, but no thanks” and added 50,000 words.
Tagline: Take one saucy sportscaster, add baseball’s notorious bad-boy,
throw in 15 years of frenzied feelings & an exclusive interview with strings attached...and you get a reunion that’s sure to get knocked out of the park!

Welcome special guest: author Wendi Zwaduk @WendiZwaduk

Today we have author, Wendi Zwaduk, visiting. Wendi earned a BA in education at Kent State university and as well as a Masters in Education from Nova Southeastern University. She’s tried her hand at teaching, waitressing, and retail sales, but writing holds her heart. She also writes as Megan Slayer.

* So, Wendi, what inspired you to become a writer?
I read a Harlequin book and thought, gee, I can do that. Plus, I didn’t particularly care for the heroine and thought, if I’d written her, I’d have done this. Then I thought, why am I thinking about this when I could be writing it? So I did.
* When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
2005. It was a NASCAR themed story. Started out at 70k because I thought I’d sell it to Harlequin. Chuckle, chuckle. They didn’t give it a second look. I shelved it for 5 years and then got it back out. Trimmed it down to 30k and resubbed it to Total-E-Bound in 2011. It came out in August of 2011.
* How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
Five full length NASCAR stories, a firefighter novel and a stripper novel.
* What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
I write in the contemporary romance genre and the paranormal, but I’ve dabbled in historical. Megan loves to write in the mm genre. Favorite? Racing themed books, but I love a spicy hot contemporary, too.
* What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Best: Read. Lots. In your genre.
Worst: Wow, you should totally sub this—only to find out that they never really thought it was ready.

* How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?

First acceptance? I screamed and ran down the stairs. Then we went out to dinner. First rejection? I cried. Shelved the book for a month and then made myself go back to it.
* In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
For Megan’s latest work, Fire Woman, I’d say... Zac would be played by Billy Zane or Niall Matter. Atria would be either Dakota Fanning a little older or, and I know this is impossible because she’s dead, but a really good actress for Atria would be Jean Arthur back in the day.  Villain? Hmm. Bradley Cooper would be great as Niccolo – he can do the smarmy yet sexy look very well.
For my latest, Savin’ Me... Parkur is Brett Chukerman. Jacoby is very much Zak Bagans from Ghost Adventures and Juniper would be Evan Rachel Wood. Villains? I’m not totally sure. The producer is almost a Telly Savales looking guy, so probably him. But for the female villain...Winona Ryder with blonde hair.

* The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
Fire Woman is part of a loose paranormal series about the band Glow and is out with Changeling Press. Half of the members are elementals and the other half aren’t. It’s a rock/punk band and the exploits of the members. There will be four books in all plus a Christmas story! Savin’ Me is part of the Treble Anthology with Total-E-Bound. This is a standalone story, but works well with the rest of the stories in the anthology.
*** Now for some fun info… ***
* What’s your favorite color?
Blue, dark blue
* What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Mint chocolate chip, but it has to be green with chocolate bits in it, not the white with minty stuff added.
* Are you a cat, dog or both kind of person?
Cat, but I have two dogs and two cats.
* Would you/have you own(ed) a snake or some other exotic pet?
Does a kid count?
* Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
73 degrees and a little overcast.
* Are you a morning person or night owl?
Night owl

She’s everything he needs...if he can withstand the burn.
Atria Moline isn’t your average photographer. She controls fire. Sounds fun, being able to scorch whenever you like? Think again. She’s lonely and desperate for the touch of the man who can dance in her flame—if she doesn’t immolate him first.
Zac “Iceman” Frost controls the stage with his band Glow. He’s not about to back down from Atria’s challenge. He’s got secrets of his own and his sights set on her.
Can they find love in each other’s arms before a threat from her past destroys their future?
(I wanted to write for Changeling, talked to the authors there who encouraged me and I subbed. This is what I ended up with and I’m thrilled.)

For Wendi:

Savin’ Me
Treble Anthology
Total-E-Bound
Contemporary, Erotic, Menage, BDSM, toys, M/F/M, M/M, M/F, M/M/F, voyeurism

Three is their magic number. Now they’ve got to decide if the magic is worth saving.
Razrs Edge packed stadiums, fuelled by the inner turmoil and passion of the three founding members. The lights aren’t as bright and the crowds cheer a little less now that the threesome has parted ways.
It’s time to bring the magic back.
Parkur’s not convinced the split is for good. They were meant to be three. But can he write the music to convince Juniper and Jacoby to give him a second chance? Juniper and Jacoby want the triad intact. Is the love they shared as three enough to erase the destruction in their collective past?
Contains two heroes hell bent on making sweet music with the woman of their dreams, the rediscovery of passion between three people, hot manlove and ménage action, a little spanking, some toy play, and some bondage...oh yes...
(I pushed myself to write something for the anthology and had an editor tell me I had to. So I did.)

Looking for some of my stories?

Hi all!
Looking for some of my stories? Well, you’ve come to the right place to find out what happened. Recently I’ve received my books/rights back on several stories. No, nothing bad happened. It was a personal business move on my part, and though there were issues, there is no ill will on my end toward the house(s) I now once published with. I will say one thing though to all my author friends out there and those looking to be published…keep tabs on your contracts, the wording within them, dates and signatures. Unsure of something? Consult an intellectual property attorney. Enough said.
So… As for the stories released to me, some I plan on shining up and finding homes for, like The Mystics; Concealed Affairs; Beautiful People; The Si’Ludo Prophecy books & The Cat stories. Some or all of those, or maybe others, I may self-publish, like The Decision & the longer Dirty Little books, depending upon what occurs. Some might be out there as free reads…I’m thinking Dirty Little Secret and DL Lie. Of course, before I do anything with the stories they’ll be revised and re-checked by my crit group & renamed and all that good stuff. Right now, though, I have several other irons in the fire to take care of before I tackle my older stuff, but once I get a game plan in place, I’ll be sure to let you know. :)
This also means that my Six Sentence Sunday will be changing up since Dirty Little Demons was one of the released books/contracts. Instead, I’ll be promoting more of Wild West Weekend, and once I get edits, then I’ll focus on Chasing Miss Kringle and Sunset Desires, so be sure to stay tuned for those hot stories!
As always…
Happy Reading!

Welcome special guest: author L.J. LaBarthe @brbsiberia

Today we have author, L.J. LaBarthe, visiting. L.J. is an Australian woman living with disabilities and her cat. As a child, she won a competition drawing a picture of Australian Humpty Dumpty, with a story she wrote set in Australia. L. J. spends her free time watching television and reading. She enjoys a snifter of Absinthe from time to time.

* So, L.J., what inspired you to become a writer?
The ideas in my head needed an outlet. I often daydream stories when I go walking or when I'm travelling to fill the time, and eventually, I decided that I should try writing them down instead of just daydreaming them.
* When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
My first professionally published story is "Ties That Bind" and was for the "To Have and To Hold" anthology released by Dreamspinner Press. It was around 13000 words long and it's still available for sale as a short story on the Dreamspinner website. (Here: http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=1368)
* How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
Oh, loads. Too many to count. I've got discs with half-finished stories and some that are finished but will never see the light of day.
* What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
I write predominantly contemporary m/m romance, paranormal m/m romance and historical m/m romance, and I write these genres because these are what I enjoy reading. Out of those, though, I think the paranormal and historical genres are tied as my favourites.
* What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Best: Keep on trying and don't take rejection letters or negative reviews personally. That's hard, sometimes really hard, but it's important to remember that rejection letters or negative reviews are not rejecting you, the person, and everyone is different. What one person likes, another won't. It's no more personal than that.
Worst: Always write, even when you're tired or sick. I dispute this, because I've read what I've written when I'm tired or sick and the typos are a dime a dozen. The sentences are horribly long and make little sense and I shudder when I see what's come out of my tired brain. If there's a deadline, sometimes it can't be helped, but that's when you go over it and fix it with a clear mind (or as clear as you can be) before the deadline.

* How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
I save them. The rejections are just as valuable to me as the acceptances, although I do prefer the acceptances of course! But I keep them all as a collection documenting my journey from the first thing I ever submitted and how I've improved or need to improve to the current day.
* In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
Ooh, dream casting! I love dream casting. In the short story for the Christmas anthology for Dreamspinner, my ADF soldier, Craig, would be played by Aussie actor and model, Daniel Macpherson and my university student, Shin, would be played by Korean actor, model and singer, Won Bin.
In my Archangels story, Archangel Michael would be played by Korean actor and singer/rapper, Yoo Seung Jun and Archangel Gabriel would be played by British actor, Daniel Craig. James Bond as an Archangel, it fits, right? :)

* The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
"Long Road Back" is a stand-alone story, set in Darwin. The idea for an Australian Christmas story had been in my mind for some time, and I was watching "Black Hawk Down" when I thought, well, what about a soldier and his family enjoying Christmas together and him falling in love with his sister's flat mate, a foreign student at Charles Darwin University. The rest fell into place after I had a sudden thought of Tisha, the sister of Craig, the soldier, dragging Shin, her flat mate, around the nearby park looking for a large fallen branch from a eucalyptus tree, that would be made into a makeshift Christmas tree.
"Fire, Burn" is also stand-alone, looking at the idea that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed not for sodomy as some folk like to claim, but for breaking the laws of hospitality and for angering God. There are sites for Bible archaeology which look at these amazing sulfur ash structures that they theorise are the remains of these cities. There's nothing like them anywhere else on Earth, and geographically, they fit as being Sodom and Gomorrah, carbon-dating has shown they fall into that time-period, too. It was fascinating, looking at these photographs and everything fell into place and "Fire, Burn," was written.

*** Now for some fun info… ***
* What’s your favorite color?
Black and red. I like jewel tones and most of my clothes are black or red or black and red. My hair is also traffic light red, because I've been dying my hair bright colours since I was 14.
* Are you a cat, dog or both kind of person?
Cat. I've always had pets but cats are better suited to living in a flat. My current feline companion is a black and white little brat named Castiel, after the angel in "Supernatural."
* If you were stranded on a desert island and were only allowed to have five modern conveniences with you, what would they be?
A never-ending Coke vending machine that was also perpetually cold and didn't require money; a power generator; a good laptop; mp3 player and dock; an internet connection. Because I can't live without music and I do love my Coke and computer.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Dirty Little Demons ~ 1 ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday )

#1 of Six Sentences over six weeks from 'Dirty Little Demons.'

Registering the beat of the music, she stepped in time with it, following his lead, rubbing her body against his in return. The two of them danced close. For a wondrous moment, she forgot about her duties, forgot about the dangerous world outside the theater, forgot the fine hunk of a man, whose hips oscillated against hers, could die in a matter of hours.
“What’s your name?” The question brought a whiff of his scent to her. The something she couldn’t place before was his pheromones.

Welcome special guest: author JJ Ranger

Today we have author, JJ Ranger, visiting. JJ Ranger began her writing career in May of 2009, spurred on by the creation of a sexy cowboy. She loves to read and watch movies for inspiration, but more than anything she loves creating worlds of her own.

* So, JJ, what inspired you to become a writer?
A haunted dude ranch and a hunky cowboy for inspiration.
* When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
My first erotic story was intended for Harlequin’s Spice Brief line. The length was just over 5000 words. It was rejected—rightly so because the hero bored even me. It still sits in my ‘to be fixed’ pile. Someday I will gather the courage to unearth the mess of words and make it pretty enough to submit somewhere else.
* How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
Two, including the first sold.
* What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
JJ Ranger only writes erotic. I officially decided to write erotic romance during a writer’s retreat. I was bouncing ideas of one of the editors and my friend, CR Moss, when the idea for Dume Ranch popped into my head. Dustin Dumen was born.
* What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Best piece of advice was to write what I love. That love will shine through to the reader. Worst piece of advice was to not write unless guaranteed to sell.  Where’s the fun in that?
* How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
When I received the acceptance letter for Dustin’s Gamble, I admit I was stunned. I couldn’t believe the editor liked the story. I mean, I was an erotic writer virgin, so I expected the rejection.  When the acceptance truly sank into my brain, I squealed and danced around the office. When rejections come, especially the personalized letters that give feedback, I soak up the suggestions. Maybe the editor can tell me how to improve. If they only give me a form rejection, that’s okay too. Every rejection is a step closer to getting published.
* In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
Hmm, I think for Dustin I would like to have Michael Weatherly (Tony from NCIS). He’s the perfect smooth charmer, and I love his sexy smile. For Shannon, I think I would pick Holly Marie Combs. She could keep Dustin in line quite nicely.
* The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
Dustin’s Gamble is Book 2 in a four-book series. Again, this series came from a brainstorming session with an editor and a good friend.  To date, the books available in the series are Deacon’s Touch by Callie Croix, and Dustin’s Gamble by JJ Ranger.
*** Now for some fun info… ***
* Are you a cat, dog or both kind of person?
Both. Though cats seem to have attitudes that match my own. I socialize when I want, but I like being aloof. Pet me when it’s my idea, otherwise go away. :)
* Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
I so love thunderstorms and snow. I can’t handle too hot because it makes me physically sick.
* Are you a morning person or night owl?
I am a mid-day girl. I wake up around 10:00am and then feel like I’m ready to crash by 3:00pm.

*** About JJ’s book… ***
Blurb:
After leaving for a career in NYC, Shannon Piermont has come home to Bandera, Texas. Her cousin is getting married and her grandmother has died, but all she can think about is Dustin Dumen. The sexy ranch owner had once been able to charm her pants off, but not this time. Just because they’d once shared a passion hotter than the Texas sun, didn’t mean she’d settle for barefoot and pregnant in a one-horse town.
Dusty knew Shannon couldn't settle down until she'd seen the world and he'd taken a huge chance she'd find her way home. Now that she has, the stakes are higher and he'll do whatever it takes to keep her there. He’d gambled with their love once--he won't do it again.
Can Dustin convince Shannon she can have it all—a career and a family—or will he have to settle for one last ride of passion?
Excerpt:
Drawing in a deep breath, she raised her hand and pressed the doorbell. She waited for two minutes and then hit the button again. She leaned her forehead against the oak door and tried to calm her ever present nerves. How would Dustin react when he saw her? Did he really know she was coming? And what would he think when he found out she intended to stay for good?
     “Guess nobody’s home,” she mumbled.
The door swung open, and she lost her balance with a startled squeak. She reached out to grab something, anything to stop her descent, and latched on to a pair of denim-clad hips. The material slipped down and with it, she landed on her knees, face-planted against a very masculine crotch. The tip of his cock peeked from the front of his red plaid boxers. Heat flooded her belly and moisture pooled in her panties in response to his arousal. The familiar scent of leather and sandalwood tickled her nose.
Dustin. Memories of a night over a decade ago filled with sweat-lathered bodies on the bank of the creek swam before her eyes. She shivered. All it would take was the slightest turn of her head and…
“Not that I’m complaining about your enthusiasm, honey, but you’re a little too far to the left,” a familiar, deep masculine voice teased.
She looked up into Dustin’s amused face. That crooked grin hit her in the gut with lust so fierce she wanted to toss away caution and jump him right there. Mortified, she pushed away and leapt to her feet. Dammit, of all the impressions she could have made, falling face first into his cock was not the way she intended to go.
Heat burned in her cheeks. “Dillon needs you at the lodge.” She turned on her heel.
“Wait.” He gripped her hand. “Aren’t you going to say hello or anything?”
Shannon shook her head, keeping her gaze locked on the safety of the door. “I can’t talk to you with your…your thing exposed. Pull up your pants, for God’s sake.” Only he could make her feel like a blushing virgin.
His laughter vibrated through her breasts, and her nipples hardened against the lace of her bra. “Well, darlin’, my exposed thing never bothered you before. But if you insist…”
The rustling of denim against skin teased her imagination and whetted an appetite she hadn’t known in a long time. She squeezed her eyes shut, blocking out the image of his cock saluting her.
     “You can turn around now.”
Drawing in a deep, calming breath, she did. He’d fastened the button-fly of his jeans, much to her relief. But the exposed V of his pelvis was too distracting for her peace of mind. She focused above the waistline and on his face. Hazel eyes were emphasized by small lines around the edges. A strong jaw was softened by full lips. Gone was the boy she’d fallen in love with. In his place was a man who could very well destroy her if she let him get too close.
“Hello, Dustin.” Shannon forced a smile and resisted rubbing her damp palms against her thighs. “Dillon asked me to let you know you are needed at the lodge.”
His eyes smoldered, and the corner of his mouth kicked up. “So you said.”
She gave a tight nod. “Right. Well.” She lifted a shoulder in an awkward gesture. “I had better get to the cabin. Have to get ready for tonight.” She swiveled toward the door. “Nice to see you, Dusty.”
     “Welcome home, Shay.”
