Welcome special guest: author Donna Hatch ( @donnahatch @WildRosePress )

Hi all! Grab a cup of tea – or whatever it is you like to drink – and check out this interview! Today we have author Donna Hatch visiting. She's another featured author at Arizona Dreamin' - Arizona's first romance-reader event! http://arizonadreamin.wordpress.com/ Donna Hatch’s writing awards include the Golden Rose and the prestigious Golden Quill. A self-proclaimed history geek, Donna frequently escapes to romantic worlds of yesteryear. The mother of six children, she patterns her heroes after her husband of over 20 years, who continues to prove that there really is a happily ever after.

So, Donna, what inspired you to become a writer?
I don’t know that any one thing inspired me to write. I always had stories in my head and I started writing them down when I was about 8 or so. When I was about 14, a friend ended a letter with the words; “I hope you make the best seller’s list.” I didn’t even know what she was talking about at that time. In 7th grade, an English teacher encouraged me to finish a novel I was working on and suggested I could publish it. But I had no idea what to do or how to do it. Many years later, I joined a writers group and got the guidance I needed.

When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
At the age of 8, I started with short stories about camping, or spending the night with a friend. Later, I moved on to mysteries and spin-offs from favorite TV shows or books. I wrote my first full-length romance novel when I was 15. And no, it will never see the light of day! I also wrote articles and short stories for a high school independent newspaper. My first novel was probably about 70 or 80 thousand words and it was basically fan fiction. My first original novel was about 130 k words and I wrote it when I was a sophomore in high school. Many years and revisions later, I finally published it with the title Queen in Exile.

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
Stories? About a dozen. Novels? Three. But I also have dozens in incomplete stories and novels, plus two that were lost during a computer crash. I know back up everything in at least three places.

What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
I write romance, in the subgenres of fantasy and historical fiction—specifically Regency. I love romance because the main part of the plot is the relationship and how they overcome the barriers between them to finally get together. I also really thrive on the happily ever after. Fantasy and historical is wonderful because it’s a true escape into a totally new world.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
The worst was 'Write what you know.' What it should be is: 'Write what you love and want to know about.' The best is to be persistent. That’s a major part of getting published.

How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
Rejection letters hurt no matter what. The first few made me crazy and I always went back through my manuscript to find out what I could do to improve it…which isn’t a bad idea, but since literature is so subjective, a rejection doesn’t always mean there’s anything wrong with a story, it just didn’t work for that person. Now, if I get a form letter rejection, I whine to my critique partner and to my husband for a day or so, eat a lot of chocolate, then I get over it and get back to work submitting and writing. If the rejection letter is personalized, I do the same first few steps as form letter rejections, only I consider if what the editor/agent said has any merit to my work and consider whether or not anything needs to be changed. When I get acceptance “letters,” which are either emails or personal phone calls, I let out a squeal, dance all around, tell all my friends, family, authors on my writers’ loops, and generally make a lot of noise. I also go out to dinner with my hubby or my critique partner (or both) and eat chocolate. Notice chocolate works great in both cases. :)

In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
Hugh Jackman would make a great Jared but he’s a little older than Jared is in the book. Maybe Zac Efron the way he appeared in The Lucky One, but with darker hair. For Elise, maybe Keri Russell or Kiera Knightley.

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
It’s book two of the Rogue Hearts series. Book one is The Stranger She Married, and book two is The Guise of a Gentleman. Book three is not yet titled. I have six book planned for this series. Inspiration for the first book is hard to nail down—it was a combination of things. I often wonder about the other side of a story, and about the back stories of secondary characters in movies and books. I also like to ask “what if…?” What if the Phantom were a gentle, loving soul trapped in a scarred body? What if Christine fell in love with the Phantom instead of the handsome young aristocrat? Anyway, my story started out like that and then took on a life of its own. I love romances, love triangles, and a twist of intrigue, so that’s all in there.
Book two was inspired by a secondary character in the book, Jared, the hero’s brother, who was a pirate and walked into the story so fun and fully formed that I had to give him his own book. He sorta demanded it. Writing his story was a lot like running after him writing what he did as fast as I could. When I had to take a break to proof my galleys for the first book, I started dreaming about Jared so vividly that I found it very distracting.

*** Now for some fun info… ***
What’s your favorite color?
I love pink and blue equally. I guess that makes me a two timer.

Are you a cat, dog or both kind of person?
Definitely cats. I have three, although it’s a long story why. I only meant to have two, but well, it happens. Okay, I confess, at the moment, because of one our cats had a litter of kittens, I currently have eight, but five will be leaving in a month or so and we’ll be back down to three. Then everyone will get fixed so there won’t be any more kittens at our house, tempting us to keep them because they’re so cute.

Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
I love cool, rainy days because in Arizona, we have so few of them that they are a treat. And I love the smell of rain on the desert!

Are you a morning person or night owl?
I’m naturally a night owl, but my children’s school schedule makes that hard to do, so I keep the morning person schedule under extreme protest. I can’t wait for summer vacation!

A Look At Author Sam Crescent ( #MM @SamCrescent @evernightpub )

Today we have author Sam Crescent visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
Here's my bio...
Sam Crescent is passionate about fiction. She loves a good erotic romance and so it only made sense for her to spread her wings and start writing. She began writing in 2009 and finally got that first acceptance in 2011.
She loves creating new characters and delving into the worlds that she creates. When she’s not panicking about a story or arguing with a character, she can be found in her kitchen creating all kinds of havoc. Like her stories the creations in the kitchen can be just as dubious but sometimes things turn out great.

What book are you going to tell us about today? Is it part of a series? If so, what's the order the books should be read in?
I’m going to be talking about, Belonging to the Steer Brothers. This is my current release and is the second book in my Cape Falls series. Crossing Boundaries is the first. Cape Falls is a fictional town which I made up and it allows me to dive in with each character and not to worry about the outside world as I can create it myself.

How'd you/your muse come up with this story?
As with most things I stumbled upon it. I could be cooking or walking and then my muse enters with a character. In this case Paul and David came to me first and then Anna.

Describe the hero in five words.
There are two heroes in my story. Paul and David. Both are opposite so Paul is the oldest and controlling in a way which means he tries to care but is not always right. David is the younger of the two and more care free. He knows what he wants and can’t understand why Paul would reject Anna. When they get a second chance he won’t allow Paul to ruin it.

Describe the heroine in five words.
Anna starts out being a little afraid of her feelings. She’s a fuller woman as I love writing these stories. When she returns, she’s determined to show her men she’s got what it takes to be theirs.

Who's your favorite character in the book & why?
I can’t pick one. David and Paul are my favourite characters because there is that bond of brotherhood and they are two completely opposite people. Paul is rather demanding and tries to protect Anna in his own way while David is not going to hold back. He wants Anna and will do everything in his power to get her.

What's your favorite line in the story?
I can’t pick one. They are all worked together and it would be difficult to try and pick out a favourite one.

A look into the story...
Belonging to the Steer Brothers Blurb:
Cape Falls, 2
Welcome to Cape Falls, a town with old-fashioned values.
When Anna Myer’s parents died in a car accident, David and Paul Steer took her in and cared for her. For years she nursed a crush for the two men, only to be rejected and pushed away.
Crushed with the rejection and believing the Steer Brothers could never love her the way she wanted, Anna left Cape Falls.
Three years passed since she left the men she loved. Anna returns with a new determination and she knows the secret that David and Paul tried to keep away from her.
There is a rumor that the Steer men share one woman. Anna wants to be that woman.
Can she prove to Paul and David she is the woman they need? Can her men overcome their fears? And after so long of being alone will she finally belong to the Steer brothers?

Be Warned: menage sex (MFM), bondage, anal sex.
Excerpt:
Impulsively, Anna leaned back. David’s body consumed her. His shoulders could be seen on either side of her. She watched in the full length mirror as his gaze moved down the line of her body and back up again. The first real sign of interest in her as a woman. She held it as a sparkle of hope it was.
With her palms down by her sides she brushed them on his thighs. He didn’t move, but she heard him take a deep breath. The air he expelled ruffled the hair at the nape of her neck.
“What are you doing, Anna?” His voice taking on a deep growl.
Tilting her head back Anna looked into his eyes. His beautiful green eyes, so beautiful and earthy they took her breath away. Bringing her other arm up, she looped it to the back of his head. With her free hand she held his arm where it circled round her waist. This was the first time they’d been this close.
Was that his cock pressing against her ass?
“Aren’t you going to kiss the birthday girl?” she asked. Her heart pounded in her chest. Her nipples ached for him to reach up and cup them. It had been years since she’d held him. The past three years hadn’t stopped the yearning to be near to him. His scent invaded her, turning her inside out. She wanted this man as much as she wanted his brother. Was she sick? Anna crossed her legs as the ache in her pussy built. Could she grab his hands and place one on her breast and the other on her mound? Her body was alive, and she wanted to feel closer to him. To take all of her clothes off and beg him to make love to her.
A moan escaped between her lips, and at the moment she didn’t care as he leaned down to give her a kiss. She noted the way his lips were closed and his eyes firm. She knew he would try for a peck on the lips or a brush. She didn’t want a peck. Anna wanted it all.
His lips brushed hers. A brotherly or friend type kiss. As he moved away her hand tightened around his neck refusing to let him go. She turned slightly in his arms so her body was in a better position to receive his kiss. Closing her eyes she deepened the kiss, opening her lips and running her tongue over his lips.
He pulled away. A hand on her cheek. “Anna, don’t do this.”
“Please, please. David, kiss me like you want too. Just once,” she begged.
“Anna, please. Don’t make me start something we won’t be able to finish.”
Hope sprang inside her. David felt something. “Then don’t stop, and let us continue until we finish.”
She watched as he closed his eyes. “Don’t say stuff you don’t mean.”
“I mean it. I want you David,” she said.
For several moments he didn’t respond, remaining frozen solid. Anna was determined to evoke some emotion whether it was disgust at her assumption or the passion she knew was just beneath the surface.
The time seemed to last for an eternity. It was the longest wait for anything in her life.
She was rewarded as his free hand captured the back of her head and thrust his tongue between her lips. His hand on her waist spun her around, moving her flush against him. Her aching breasts full and round, her nipples budding to unbearable points as they pushed, trying to come through the fabric of her gown. David placed one hand to the back of her head, his fingers sinking into the length of hair which he fisted. Anna cried out from the pain opening her mouth wider for his invasion. The one on her waist moved down to her butt. He squeezed her ass, and she heard a growl escape between his fiery kisses. Anna circled both of her arms around his neck, holding on as desire and lust took over. She felt her dress being pulled up past her butt, exposing her virginal white panties. David was gathering her dress in his hands. The thrill sent delightful shivers all around her body.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Tracked for May 27 ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday )

Six Sentences from Tracked

“Come along, Victoria. We have to pay for our prize.”
She stood, hoping her trembling legs wouldn’t buckle beneath her. Only twice before had a man unnerved her as much as that man had, and that had been years ago when she shared her first kiss with her first boyfriend. The second time…well, that had been so traumatic she still didn’t like to think about it. And seeing those eyes peer out between the curtain folds had almost brought those memories back.

Welcome special guest: author Karen Mueller Bryson ( #FF @karenmbryson )

Today we have author Karen Mueller Bryson visiting. Karen is an award-winning screenwriter, produced playwright and published novelist. She is the creator of Short on Time Books, fast-paced and fun novels for readers on the go. She's also a featured author at Arizona Dreamin' - Arizona's first romance-reader event! http://arizonadreamin.wordpress.com/

So, Karen, what inspired you to become a writer?
I knew I wanted to be a writer from the time I was four years old and first learned to read. My mom helped me write my first book and I was hooked!

When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
The first story I wrote that I tried to sell was called “Super Banana.” I was in 5th or 6th grade and created the character with my best friend at the time. I actually wrote a handwritten query and sent it to a magazine for kids. They replied with an encouraging rejection letter. I can only image what they thought getting a query from an 11-year old!

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
When I got into junior high and high school, I spent all of my free time acting and writing took a back seat as a creative endeavor. I acted off and on until I was in my late 20s, when I wrote my first stage play. I became a playwright for several years and had some success. I began writing novels again in 2000 and then started writing screenplays in 2005. I now have five novels published and nine full-length screenplays completed.

What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
In screenwriting, I specialize in based-on-true stories, family films and faith-based stories. Most of my novels for adults are romantic comedy. I also like to write for young adults, mainly comedy/romantic comedy and I have a series of time-travel adventures for kids called The Incredibly Awesome Adventures of Puggie Liddell.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
The best advice: to be a writer you have to write! Write every day if possible. And don’t let anyone ever keep you from your passion and fulfilling your dreams.
The worst advice: You need an agent to succeed in the business.

How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
I always celebrate success by doing a little dance around the house! Since I can’t dance very well, I’m glad no one can see me because they might think I’m having a seizure! :)
I generally try to ignore rejection, especially when it is mean-spirited. It’s usually only one person’s opinion anyway!

In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
For One Last Class, I always imagined Jennifer Morrison in the role of Dr. Amy Campbell. Jesse Spencer would make a great Zak Spencer. The two actors had great chemistry when they were a couple on House!

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
I’m promoting a line called Short on Time Books, fasted-paced and fun novels for readers on the go. They are each complete, stand-alone stories that readers can finish in one sitting. The adult series includes the romantic comedies: One Last Class, Twyla’s Last Trip, Hey Dorothy You’re Not in Kansas Anymore and Where is Wonderland Anyway.
I got the idea for Short on Time Books when I took a business trip from my home outside Phoenix to Los Angeles. I bought a memoir in the Phoenix Airport bookstore and I hoped to finish it on the trip. I read as much as I could traveling to LA and then tried to finish the book on my return trip to Phoenix. Unfortunately, I was only able to complete about 60 percent of the book and I still haven't finished it. I just haven't had the time since my return. That's how Short on Time Books was born; I decided to create a series of fast-paced and fun books that readers can actually finish in one sitting. Readers can now enjoy a complete story when they're traveling, commuting, or just spending an afternoon on the beach.

*** Now for some fun info… ***
Are you a cat, dog or both kind of person?
I am a bloodhound person! (If you had a bloodhound, you’d understand.)

Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
I live in Arizona! :) The hotter the better!

Are you a morning person or night owl?
I’m usually up by 5am and in bed by 10pm (except when I teach nights).

*** About Karen’s book/series… ***
The romantic comedy, One Last Class, is part of the Short on Time Books series, fast-paced and fun novels for readers in the go.
Thirty-two year old, Zak Spencer, is a washed-up teen idol, who decides to rebuild his life by returning to college in Arizona. Trouble ensues when Zak falls in love with the young professor, Amy Campbell, who teaches the one class he needs to complete his degree.
Purchase Information: Amazon.com
Interesting information: One Last Class is based on a screenplay, which was in the Top 24 in the Phoenix Film Festival Screenplay Competition. The main female character, Dr. Amy Campbell, is a young professor, who is applying for tenure. I wrote the screenplay and novel when I was a new professor, also applying for tenure.

Tuesday Tea with 3 wonderful authors ~ Group Interview! ( @sunshinyday @SiobhanMuir @evernightpub )

Hi all! Grab a cup of tea – or whatever it is you like to drink – and join in the discussion. Today we have Katherine Wyvern, Nicky Penttila and Siobhan Muir visiting and giving us a look into their writings.
About our guests...
Katherine Wyvern ~ I am the dreamer who always wanted to be somewhere else and ended up living a gipsy life in Italy, Norway, Germany, France, Spain, different universe, you name it. I worked as a printer, a welder and a gardener. I still am an artist and poet at heart. I am currently settled in SW France (for a while), living in a yurt. I don’t have a car, but I have a horse. Hay prices worry me far more than oil prices. Find Katherine at her Website/Blog and on Facebook
Nicky Penttila ~ I live in the DC metro area, after working for newspapers in Hartford, San Francisco, and Baltimore. I love honorable (if a little complicated) heroes and adventurous (if a little dreamy) heroines who may not solve all the world’s problems but not for lack of trying. As for reading, I'm a nomad, any book is fair game, but I always return to my first loves, historical fiction and science fiction/fantasy. Find Nicky at her Website/Blog on Facebook on Twitter and at Goodreads
Siobhan Muir ~ She lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband, two daughters, and a vegetarian cat she swears is a shapeshifter, though he's never shifted when she can see him. When not writing, she spends time looking down a microscope at fossil fox teeth, pursuing her other love, paleontology. An avid reader of science fiction/fantasy, her husband gave her a paranormal romance for Christmas one year, and she was hooked. She’s been writing since childhood. Friends and family threatened to lynch her unless she published. Siobhan believes in happily ever after, redemption, and communication, which you’ll find in her paranormal romance stories. Find Siobhan at her Website on her Blog on Facebook on Twitter at Goodreads and at Google Plus

What book are you going to tell us about today?
Katherine ~ Black Carnival, it is my debut novel. At a certain point it was intended as the beginning of a trilogy. For the time being I will just say that the sequel, White Sands, is almost finished, so please stay tuned for news!
Nicky ~ A Note of Scandal, my first to be published!
Siobhan ~ Her Devoted Vampire is my debut EP release. It’s not in a series, but it is the first story to introduce my world. All my stories take place in this world and these characters will show up again as secondary characters in other stories. They don’t have to be read in order, but it’s easiest to start with Her Devoted Vampire.

How'd you/your muse come up with this story?
Katherine ~ Black Carnival started out years ago as a short story while I was stitching a black and silver costume for the Carnival in Venice. I was already writing erotica as a hobby, and the costume cried for a tale of its own. I never got to wear the costume in Venice, but the story remained. Last year it suddenly demanded attention again and turned into a full blown novel, integrating elements from other old stories and new inspirations.
Nicky (A Note of Scandal) ~ First I had an ambitious heroine who wanted to get her music out to the public. Then, as I was doing research on newspapers in the Regency, which I'd assumed were all gossip rags, I discovered that the first publisher who tried to publish "truth and nothing but" was founded in this time. So of course, she lies to sell her story to him.
Siobhan (Her Devoted Vampire) ~ To be honest, I got inspired when my husband said he thought romance was silly and unrealistic. I wrote a story I thought would interest him as well as my regular female readers. I tried to make the hero believable to him as well as sexy, strong, and wonderful for women. :) It worked out pretty well.

Describe the hero in five words.
Katherine (Black Carnival) ~ Quiet, firm, rangy, unfussy, and mysterious.
Nicky (A Note of Scandal) ~ Powerful, principled, socialized but untamed.
Siobhan (Her Devoted Vampire) ~ Mysterious, devoted, primal, protective, and handsome.

Describe the heroine in five words.
Katherine (Black Carnival) ~ Emotional, shy, self-ironic (is that two words?), tender, lonely.
Nicky (A Note of Scandal) ~ Ambitious, clever, adaptable but adrift.
Siobhan (Her Devoted Vampire) ~ Skeptical, strong, determined, sassy, and humorous.

Who's your favorite character in the book & why?
Katherine (Black Carnival) ~ It’s really hard to choose, it would have to be the hero or his male lover, Laz’law. Maybe Laz’law, because he shares something of my own nature, adventurous with a hint of insecurity, but in a more flamboyant style. He is a stunningly beautiful black boy, a bit of a brat, a bit of a sweetheart, hiding a very tender heart behind a smug, tough, muscular, all-tattooed and pierced exterior.
Nicky (A Note of Scandal) ~ I love them all, especially Will (the hero, a newspaper wretch like me) and Swizzlewit (a minor character). But I guess my fave is my heroine, Olivia, because she goes full-bore for what she wants. She inspired me.
Siobhan (Her Devoted Vampire) ~ My favorite character is Bridget because she is introduced to the world of fantastic creatures and won’t take it at face value. She makes them explain it to her and even then she’s skeptical. I also love that she grows and learns. Her understanding comes later.

What's your favorite line in the story?
Katherine (Black Carnival) ~ Oooh! That is a painful one! There are so many! Ok, a little description of Laz’law: “Even in that room full of gorgeously clad and masked figures, he looked as beautiful, powerful and exotic as a dew-spattered panther in a pack of well-groomed poodles.”
Nicky (A Note of Scandal) ~ Most of my favorites need exposition, but here is one: She felt a new composition coming on.
Siobhan (Her Devoted Vampire) ~ “Except, perhaps, being kidnapped by a vampire with a house full of werewolves.” (Fredrick)

If the font in the following sections seems small, hold the 'Ctrl' key on your keyboard and click on the + (plus) key until it's large enough for you. :)

Here's a look at Black Carnival by Katherine Wyvern...
~ Blurb ~
The city of Venice has been rebuilt on the far planet of Cydonia. Despite the uneasy presence of the mysterious, only part-human Sand Riders who roam the Cydonian deserts, The Black Carnival has become a celebration of beauty and lust known all over the Galaxy.
Ivory Blake, a young artist from the conservative Central Planets, is thrown in the middle of the festivities to illustrate a new book about the Black Carnival. As a guest of the glamorous art collector Lukan LøvensgÃ¥rd, her professional assignment quickly turns into a highly emotional exploration of sensuality in all its most varied aspects, from BDSM to romantic love, passing through obsession, fear, jealousy and passionate, tender complicity.

~ Excerpt ~
Laz'law took the almost empty glass from my hand; I heard him getting up and walk off towards the bar, but by then Lune was kissing my mouth in intense, hot, tongue-and-teeth kisses, and I was quite distracted. I felt Laz'law sitting back on the sofa and lifting my skirt up. He took off my tall, soft suede boots and began caressing my knees, just under the edge of the skirt, then further up, running a flat warm palm along my legs. When his hand reached the naked skin of my thighs I shuddered with pleasure and finally broke the kiss, opening my eyes to look at him.
He smiled at me, and kept caressing me in flat even caresses as if savoring the smoothness of the silk stockings and of my skin. Lune looked at him with a curiously affectionate smile, and then he said to me, "Come here."
He pulled me to sit in his lap, and began kissing me again, running his searching lips on my mouth, my throat, my neck. I sighed, my head thrown back, quite abandoned in his arms, when I felt Laz'law standing up behind me. His warm hands began to massage my naked shoulders, as if to ease my nerves. I didn’t think I needed any easing, but his warm fingers seemed to unravel my back as if it had been knotted. I bent my head forward to invite his hands higher. He obliged; his palms rubbed warmly along my neck, crawled in circles on my skull, loosening my hair, then descended again. He caressed my tightly corseted breasts and sides. Then he lifted my hair out of the way and started kissing the nape of my neck and my spine, between my shoulder blades.
   I was melting like chocolate.
I pressed my face in the curve of Lune’s throat, opening my lips to taste his skin. Laz’law kneeled on the carpet behind me, lifted the skirt up around my waist, and went on kissing his way down my back as his hands caressed my legs and then my buttocks. His breath puffed warm through the crisscrossing lacing of my corset, making me shiver in anticipation.
I think I could have gone on like that forever, but after a while Lune sat up and moved further back on the deep sofa.
“Turn,” he whispered, pushing and pulling me around until I turned in his lap and sat facing Laz’law, who smiled, running his hands lightly along the inside of my legs.
I relaxed against Lune’s body, my back on his chest. I parted my legs a bit, feeling wonderfully exposed, slutty and happy. Lune lowered the zipper of my corset and, as my breasts spilled out of their almost painful confinement, I sighed and put my arms up around his neck, turning his face down to mine, silently begging him to kiss me again.
He was more than willing to comply, and kissed me deeply, hotly, his lips covering mine entirely, his tongue lashing down my throat, circling in my mouth, searching and teasing, pinning my head irresistibly against his shoulder. He kissed in fierce, carnivorous kisses, in surprising, delightful contrast with the quiet courtesy of his manner and the sweetness of his smile.
One of his hands had taken hold of my left breast, and he was squeezing my nipple, softly at first and then harder, rolling the tender skin between his strong fingers until it almost hurt. He smoothly pushed his knees between mine, and spread my legs wide with his, opening me to Laz’law’s kisses. My breath was quick and shallow in his mouth.
I could feel Laz'law's rough, scaly, metal studded brows brushing on the skin of my thighs, his warm mouth open on the almost transparent lace of my panties. His tongue was even warmer, and he ran it flatly on the damp lace a few times before untying the two twin bows that tied the panties around my hips. When my sex was naked and open before him, I pushed it upward towards his face, with a tiny pleading moan. When he stooped forward, I began rocking against his rough chin; he laughed softly and started lapping me in brief quick laps, retreating out of my reach after each lap, until I strained and arched my back for more.
"What a hot little thing she is, indeed," he said, and Lune broke the kiss again to nod and laugh.
   “Told you,” he said.
They both stared at me, and I suddenly felt somewhat self-conscious at the thought that they had been talking about me, although it was quite natural, I guess. I sat up a bit straighter, closing my legs somewhat. Laz'law smiled up at me, caressing my thighs, murmuring something unintelligible but soothing while kissing my knees apart again, but in that moment I felt Lune's hands gently pushing me off his lap. I stood up and he carefully unbuttoned my skirt, which slid down my hips with a silky rustle. I kicked it off, and Laz'law, still fully dressed, still on his knees on the carpet, pulled me toward him and pressed his mouth hard on my sex.
That is when the last of my shyness went overboard.

Here's a look at A Note of Scandal by Nicky Penttila...
~ Blurb ~
What’s the harm in a little white lie? Especially when it could carry so much good—a new life for a wounded soldier, catharsis after long years of war, and an opportunity for lady composer Olivia Delancey to finally hear her music played in public.
Newspaper publisher Will Marsh refuses to compound the sins of his father’s generation by taking money to print propaganda. But with the end of the wars in France and America, he needs something new to drive Londoners to grab his paper first. Why not publish the score of the “Tune That Took Waterloo,” by a wounded vet, no less?
As Olivia struggles to keep her secrets from this unsuitably alluring publisher, and Will fights to find the truth without losing his hold on this bright-eyed angel who has descended into his life, both discover another sort of truth.
Being the talk of London can be bad—or very, very good.

~ Excerpt ~
“Drinking in dear Cousin Olivia?” Avery accepted a mug of over-yeasty ale from the passing barkeep.
   “Olivia Delancey?”
“The Honorable. And once my intended. Seems I’ve cocked that up, as well.” He sipped the foam off the top of the ale. “Too bad I can’t invite you to sup with us tonight. Should be a right circus.”
“She hangs so on his words.” Will frowned, and then caught himself. She was not the story; that florid piece of political beef beside her was.
“Can’t you see? Look at her chin. The edge, there, under her ear.” It was pale, but even at a distance he could see a slight tremor. A crack in the chiseled beauty.
   “She’s ill?”
“White-hot angry, my friend.” Will tore his gaze from the porcelain lady to raise an eyebrow at him. “Trust me,” Avery said, “she has had that tiny flaw since she was a dandled babe.”
“Taken advantage of it, have you?” Will’s eyes narrowed, oddly protective. Avery put up his hands in mock surrender.
“Only a very small snake.” He grinned. “Down the back of her dress, at a tea party.”
“And all she did was set her chin?” Ladies were cold, he knew, but that sounded downright frigid.
“At first. Then the screaming started.” Avery pushed into the crowd. “We’d best remove the poor man from danger, don’t you think?”
Though the room was small, they made slow progress through the swells of men reeking of sour beef, stale beer, and sweat. Wishing to avoid even the appearance of aggression, so swift a complaint to launch against newsmen, Will allowed Avery to lead. But he did not take his gaze from the lady. Mellon’s hand had crept up to her shoulder. Was he pulling her closer?
Will’s hand fisted. He might need to punch his quarry before interviewing him.
“Mellon.” Avery stepped between the couple, allowing the society jewel to take a step back, arm intact. Will stopped short beside her.
When her attention was elsewhere, her round, full lips dominated her face, the bottom line of the lower lip parallel with the soft oval of her jaw line. But no one would notice the rest of her face, or the fragile cream of her skin, when she turned her gaze on them. Eyes like sapphires, expensive and rare. And crackling with anger.

Here's a look at Her Devoted Vampire by Siobhan Muir...
~ Blurb ~
Bridget doesn't believe in vampires or werewolves, but that doesn't stop one from kidnapping her.
Bridget Shanahan’s life seems bleak and boring until she gets mugged and abducted from her favorite coffee shop by the sexiest man she’s ever met. Unfortunately, he’s a lunatic who believes he’s some kind of vampire savior surrounded by a security force of werewolves. And he’s determined to keep her.
Fredrick MacGregor has been having visions of this woman in danger for the last six months. A woman he must protect because she’s the Avatar of the Goddess. However, when he brings her home, she doesn’t believe he's a vampire or that she is the Avatar, and she definitely doesn't want to stay. But the sense of danger persists and he'll do anything to keep her safe, even if it means risking the loss of the only woman who makes his endless life bearable again.

~ Excerpt ~
“Who the hell are you? Did you escape from a mental institution? Forget to take your meds today? I have got to get out of here!” Bridget shoved the tray toward him and tried to slide out of the bed, naked or no. She’d raid one of the closets for a coat and walk to the nearest place to get a taxi. Maybe I’ll just take his trench coat.
“Bridget, I can’t let you leave quite yet,” he said as he caught her right arm in a gentle but firm grip. “Not until you tell me what you are.”
“You can’t let me leave? Or won’t?” She pulled against his grip, but it was like she was handcuffed to a concrete post.
“The result is the same regardless of semantics.”
“Why are you keeping me here? What am I to you? I was just minding my own business and told you I didn’t want or need your help getting home, and you kidnapped me! Why didn’t you take me to the hospital?” The last was shouted at him as she jerked her arm to get away. She kept pulling despite the pain in her shoulder as his grip tightened. “Let me go!
She yanked the full weight of her body against his hold on her arm and felt the shoulder separate. His fingers bruised her arm, and his expression shifted into feral intensity that made her pull all the harder as she tried to breathe through the pain.
He’s a freak! I won’t be held like some animal for him to admire!
Fredrick squeezed her arm until it was numb from the elbow down, and she moaned in anguish. At the last second, she reversed her momentum and swung her free hand, balled into a fist, at his head. To her amazement, he caught it and held it fast, not crushing her fingers, but holding them tightly closed. She froze, absorbing the meaning of his strength, and realized she’d never get away from him. He was just too strong for her to fight. It infuriated her she was so easily defeated, and she directed all that impotent rage at him through her livid glare.
   “Let. Me. Go.”
“You are tired and overwrought. You should rest.” He met her gaze unflinchingly. “We will speak more after you’ve slept.”
Fredrick didn’t release her until she relaxed her body back into the pillows on the bed. But her eyes burned with her wrath, and two tears slowly spilled over her lower lids to drip down her cheeks. She didn’t sob, nor did her lips tremble, but her anger seethed beneath her skin. She said nothing, and after a while he let go of her and stood.
“Don’t try to escape.” His voice crackled with cold fury. What did he have to be mad about? “I will tell Cynthia and the others to keep an eye and an ear out for you. One thing about werewolves and vampires you should be aware of: we are a hundred times faster and stronger than the average human male, so you won’t be a problem to catch. I don’t recommend trying to run.”
He picked up the tray and stepped back from the bed.
Bridget said nothing, just stared at him with recrimination. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of rubbing her numb arm where it began to tingle. It was badly bruised, she knew, maybe even dislocated, but she didn’t look at it. She glared as he nonchalantly turned his back on her and went to the door of the room.
Before Fredrick left, he reached out and grabbed the pocketknife, then switched off the light and shut the door behind him. She lay in the dark with nothing but the light from the crack beneath door to illuminate her tears. She waited until his shadow stepped away before she rolled over and allowed herself to cry.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Tracked for May 20 ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday )

Six Sentences from Tracked

She should have turned tail and ran the moment the poster boards in the hotel entrance advertising the bachelor auction came into view. Sally, apparently sensing her intent to escape, had clutched her arm, inhibiting her chance to flee.
Rubbing the tender area on her bicep, she cast a glance over her shoulder. The older woman’s thin lips pressed into a smug grin, enhancing the small laugh lines around her eyes.
Of course she’d be pleased with herself. She tricked me into coming.

Welcome special guest: author Lila Shaw ( #FF @Lila_Shaw @evernightpub )

Today we have author Lila Shaw visiting. Lila's stories typically involve strong-willed women, and are often playful, sarcastic and even silly. She believes if you can’t occasionally laugh at the physical aspects of love, you’re taking life far too seriously. Lila, who also writes under the name Claire Gillian, lives in the Pacific NW with her family and works full time as a CFO/COO.

So, Lila, what inspired you to become a writer?
I started with fan fiction because I wanted to put favorite characters in situations and settings of my own creation. It was escapism and Mary Sue’ism through and through. I quickly found that creating my own characters with their own looks, mannerisms and behaviors was much more fun and probably a little healthier for my mental wellbeing. LOL.

When did you attempt your first story? I started it 2008, a contemporary romance novel about an older widow and the actor she reluctantly falls for. It was called The Fool’s Bet and was a very foolish bit of tripe indeed. What length was it? I don’t remember exactly but I think it was around 85,000 words. What's become of it? It’s locked away in my writer’s trunk with the scathing final beta reader’s comments of “I want to burn this manuscript and stomp on its ashes” forever memorialized. That beta reader was absolutely correct in telling me what she did. The plot and characters were melodramatic stereotypes, both childish and horrific. Still…there are a few bits that I might be able to salvage…one day…but not terribly likely.

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
I wrote nearly two hundred short stories before I sold one to an anthology. I did a flash fiction challenge exercise every Sunday night for nearly two years over at the Absolute Write forum for writers. Many of those stories later became fodder for longer stories. As far as novels go, I’ve written six novels / novellas in their entireties. I just published as my debut, novel #2, in April (The P.U.R.E. by Claire Gillian) and All’s Fair in Love and War by Lila Shaw is my second published novel and the third one I wrote. Novels 4 and 5 are still being spit-shined. Novel #6 is currently out on submission as is a collection of short stories. I have short stories that will be published in two forthcoming anthologies releasing in a few weeks.

What genre(s) do you write in? All of them! I can’t decide! My short stories cover everything from horror to steampunk to historical romance to suspense/thrillers. My novels thus far have all had heavy romantic elements and usually humor too. I write for three audiences—over 18 erotica/erotic romance as Lila Shaw; romantic mystery, paranormal romance and urban fantasy as Claire Gillian; and I have a third pen name I use for my young adult writing (one completed novel for her and one in process). What drew you to write in it/them? I just like to write about interesting characters with fun dialogue, leaning more toward character-driven stories. I have very eclectic reading tastes and what I’ve read most recently tends to influence what style I lean toward in my own writings from week to week. What’s your favorite genre of all to write in? Romance of course! For any and all ages, any and all heat levels.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Best piece of writing advice was “Tell / show the reader what she needs to know when she needs to know it NOT what you want her to know. There’s a big difference.” Worse piece of advice was to follow all the traditional writing and publishing “rules”.

How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
I save them all but never re-read the rejections. After a rejection, I’ll typically sink into the quagmire of “I’m nothing but a hack” for a while, not too long, then pull myself back out and try again. For successes…well, that’s why there’s Twitter and Facebook and long suffering friends who will pat you on the back, retweet you or at least give you a “like”, bless their hearts. LOL

In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? For Colin, I’d like a cross between Matt Bomer (those eyes!) and Henry Cavill (that chin and that bod!). For Shelby, I’d pick Zooey Deschanel. If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts? No real villain, but Shelby’s brother, Will, and Colin’s little sister, Meghan, are also key players. I’ve not thought about them as much but off the top of my head, I’d go with Chris Evans and Deborah Ann Woll

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
It's a stand alone story. I wanted to write a battle of the sexes romance in a workplace setting with lots of humor so it would be easy to return to day after day during NaNoWriMo 2009 that I wrote it for. I made both the hero and heroine CPA’s because I’m a CPA, though I no longer practice. I’m determined to make CPAs sexy!

All’s Fair in Love and War, released May 11th from Evernight Publishing
Tagline: “All’s fair in love and war—wage it wisely.”
Blurb:
Only two obstacles block Shelby Donaldson’s path to success at her new job–her sizzling hot supervisor and his freezing cold attitude. Maybe her flirting got a little out of hand at first, but that’s no reason for Mr. Sighs-A-Lot to screw her over in her performance review.
Colin Montoya is not going to fall for Shelby’s sex-in-a-suit brand of temptation. He’s got her number and is not going to dial it, nor is he going to allow Shelby’s philandering brother to marry his baby sister.
After an explosive one-night stand goes awry, battle lines are drawn. But can the warring co-workers negotiate a cease-fire long enough to realize their romantic fortunes might just lie in each other?

Excerpt:
Colin watched Shelby leave, baffled as usual by her flighty behavior. She was the most frustrating woman he had ever met, in more ways than one. Having to work with her for three weeks had stretched his tolerance to the limit. He was grateful to finally be rid of her, the signed performance review in his hot little hands. If only his body felt the same way about her as his head.
He rose from his chair and followed her out. He checked his watch. Nearly five-thirty. Since it was also a Friday, happy hour at the usual location awaited. Good thing, too, because he always felt like a stiff drink after an exchange with Shelby Donaldson.
Shelby sashayed around the corner to her cubicle. Colin couldn’t help but track her hips as they swayed. Exasperated with his unbidden reaction, he made a hard right into his own cubicle and collapsed into his chair. After lingering over a few last minute client details, he organized and stowed his work, then headed out.
At Roscoe's Sports Bar and Grill in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon, Colin zeroed in on the tiny table a couple of his buddies had staked out near the foosball tables. Pulling up a bar stool, he ordered a beer then dove into the order of nachos that claimed nearly the entire surface of the table. He and his friends caught up with each other, and he shared the reason for his tardiness.
"Isn’t that her over there?" His friend and colleague Allan pointed to a table of giggly women near the bar.
Colin turned and saw several women from his firm, including Shelby.
"Yeah." He spun back around, hoping she hadn’t spotted him.
"Which one is she?" his other friend, Christian, asked.
"She’s the one in the red sweater with long dark hair parted on the side, big hoop earrings with these stupid cats hanging from the bottom, sinister blood red talons for fingernails. You can't miss her if you look for the pall of obstinacy that surrounds her, sort of like Pigpen from Peanuts with his cloud of dirt."
"The one with the nice rack?"
"I hadn’t noticed." Colin feigned disinterest, struggling to keep all inflection from his voice.
“I guess you were too preoccupied with her pus – kitties.” Allen slapped him on the back, and both friends guffawed.
If Colin were being honest, he’d have to admit that not much about Shelby escaped his attention – hazel eyes that danced with amusement at the oddest things, a laugh that contrasted sharply with her delicate features in its bawdiness. And yes, she had a nice rack, as well as nice legs and a tight little body she obviously pampered. Every square inch of her was designed to distract and lure a man to his doom. Even her infectious laughter, which cut through the din of the bar, got to him. It always had, but that lethal package was marred by a personality made of piss and vinegar when she didn't get her way. Given the inappropriateness of dating a co-worker, especially a subordinate, he was almost grateful for the fatal flaw.
Colin escaped to the bathrooms to shut out the mirthful sounds. On his return, he met Shelby in the narrow hallway. They did the obstacle dance with each other before he stopped and stood to one side. As she nodded then passed, he got a whiff of her perfume, the same scent she wore every day. Over his shoulder, he watched her walk away before he continued back to his table, shaking his head. He absolutely hated how she turned him upside down.

Interesting information:
All’s Fair was written for my very first year doing NaNoWriMo, in 2009. I planned out my plot ahead of time, started at midnight plus one second on November 1st and finished on November 19th, the day after my birthday. I would have finished around November 14th but I ran out of plot at 35,000 words, hence the creation of the dream sequences that punctuate the book. I always intended to pull those out later, but I sort of fell in love with them. Writer’s Darlings or not, they’ve survived into the final product.
