What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Tess Woods is a health professional who lives in Perth, Australia with one husband, two children, one dog and one cat who rules over all of them. Love at First Flight is her first novel.
* When she isn't working or being a personal assistant to her kids, Tess enjoys reading and all kinds of grannyish pleasures like knitting, baking, drinking tea, watching Downton Abbey and tending to the veggie patch.
* What would you risk to be with the love of your life? And what if your soul mate is the one who will destroy you?
* Mel is living the dream. She's a successful GP, married to a charming anaesthetist and raising a beautiful family in their plush home in Perth. But when she boards a flight to Melbourne, she meets Matt and her picture perfect Stepford life unravels as she falls in love for the first time ever.
* Are you still up?
* What? Oh my God! It was her. It had to be her. But what if it wasn’t her? What if it was
a message from some random person meant for another number? Should I text back or call? Call. Yeah, call, that way I would know for sure it was her. I rang the number attached to the message. My palms sweated.
* She answered on the first ring. ‘Hi,’ she whispered. ‘I think I’m drunk.’
* I gulped. She sounded even sexier on the phone than she did in person. I was hard immediately. I had to go to her. Now.
* ‘Where are you?’ I asked, the adrenaline coursing through me.
* ‘I’m at the Old Colonial on Flinders Street. Do you know it?’
* ‘Yeah.’ I could barely inhale.
* ‘Matt,’ her voice was shaky, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing. I shouldn’t have called you. I just found your note and …’
* I cut her off. ‘I’m on my way. I’ll ring when I get there. I’ll be around half an hour, okay?’ I was already up and pulling on my jeans.
* ‘Um, Matt …’
* ‘I’m coming.’ I hung up.
* I was out of the house in less than two minutes. I floored the car into reverse and sped forwards in the direction of the city. The traffic was heavy even at this hour and I swore violently when I had to stop at a red traffic light for the second time.
* My head was spinning. What should I say or do once I was with her? I was worried that if she really was drunk like she’d said, then she might fall asleep before I reached her, so I pressed my foot down harder on the accelerator pedal. I flew over the West Gate Bridge, weaving in and out of lanes like a maniac, gesturing wildly at cars in my way. I pulled into a parking bay at the front of the hotel fourteen minutes after our phone call had ended. Surely that was some sort of land speed record between Williamstown and the city.
* My senses were heightened to the point where I felt dangerously close to the edge.
* I rang her number and she answered on the first ring again.
* ‘Matt, I’m sorry,’ she whispered. ‘This is crazy. I’m freaking out. I can’t think straight. I’m not coming down.’
* I’d spent the last few hours thinking I would never hear from her again. And now that I was this close, I couldn’t just forget about it and go home.
* ‘Please come down, Mel. I don’t want to beg you. You obviously want to see me.’
* ‘But I’m drunk.’ She sounded scared. ‘And I’m so confused.’
* ‘Let’s just go somewhere and talk then. You messaged me, I came. I think we’ll both regret it if I turn around and go home now.’ I tried to keep my voice low and even. ‘Go on, Mel, come down. What’s the worst that could happen?’
* There was a long silence.
* ‘Okay,’ she whispered. ‘I’ll meet you in the lobby.’
