S. B. Redstone & 'Stardust Dreams' @sbredstone @GoddessFish #SciFi #romance

Today we have author S. B. Redstone visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Steven Rosenstein, penname S. B. Redstone, had a career as a school psychologist and private practice Licensed Clinical Social Worker on Long Island. Always seeking the truths of human nature, he wrote a personal improvement book, Taming Your Inner & Outer Bullies: Confronting Life’s Stressors And Winning, published by New Horizon Press Books. He has written articles on human nature and relationships, given lectures, and appeared on radio shows. Always having a vivid imagination, he first became a successful writer of short stories. His mystery thriller, A Sinister Obsession, was published by Black Opal Books. As an expert in the field of human psychology, he has an exceptional ability to develop realistic and exciting characters in his novels. Many of my characters have been taken from his clinical experiences. Stardust Dreams is his first romance novel, although romantic relationships stand out in his other works. He is a member of the International Thriller Writers Org and Romance Writers of America. He resides with his wife in New York and Florida.

Today S. B. Redstone will be talking about how he became a writer and what inspired him in regard to the story he's promoting.
* I had a childhood full of imagination. When I watched a cowboy movie, I created stories of cowboys and Indians, and I was always the star. I was Superman, an astronaut, Tarzan, policeman, and every other action hero. There was no creative writing in my school during my era. I hated boring school. Writing was school work. I hated school work. I did it. but I hated it. It wasn’t until I was in a junior, at a new college, in the library, with hours to kill, that I finally put my imagination on paper. I wrote loneliness sayings. “Wouldn’t it be horrible if you were good your whole life, never committed a sin, had a boring life, then went to heaven, and found no one there!” I enjoyed those silly thoughts, but I didn’t show them to anyone. Let me back up. I grew up with friends, engaging in the hobby of the week, always new fun projects, sometimes success and sometimes failure. It’s easy to try new things when you don’t worry about criticism. In college, English lit classes motivated me to write poetry. Friends liked them. With no skill or brains I took a giant leap and wrote a short story. Thankfully, it’s been lost in history. More years pass. The demands of college, masters’ degrees in school psychology and clinical social work, a post-graduate degree in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, working days and evenings, with a growing family, and home projects, my imagination never faulted, but who had free time to write. Near forty years of age, with more free time, it took my envy and jealousy of other writers to get me to finally sit in front of a typewriter. Stephen King was my inspiration. Picture this, two fingers hitting typewriter keys, reams of paper crumbled on the floor, no skill, no technique, and no brains, all I accomplished was writing a confused, sadly written story full of run on sentences, repetition, misuse of adjectives, and worse. Blind to my inadequacies, I sent The Demon Hunters to literary agents. One kindly one wrote back, saying you have talent, learn to write! With that kick in the pants, I stopped being delusional. I learned my craft through writing short stories, all of which were eventually published in online magazines. By the way, being self-taught is not something I would suggest other writers to do. We can be too blind to our mistakes. Spurred on by success, using my clinical experiences as an inspiration, I began writing a mystery thriller. Stop! In my therapeutic career, when I began to look at our species’ behavior from a unique standpoint, I’m urged by colleagues to write a book on human nature and relationships. I said, you would care what an obscure therapist from Long Island thinks? I’m not Freud. And my colleagues answered. “Everyone.” So, after years of research and development, Taming Your Inner & Outer Bullies: Confronting Life’s Stressors And Winning was published by New Horizon Press Books. Pure joy. More years pass. Back to fiction writing with no success. Believe me I had more than my share of impediments, mistakes, and phonies in the business. I retire. Now I have more than enough time for a writing career. All my efforts finally pay off. Black Opal books publishes my mystery thriller, A Sinister Obsession, to rave reviews. My dream comes true. I’m certain most writers have at least ten stories in their heads that they think are worthy of turning into a novel. I’ve accepted that fate has been in control of my life. One evening, I was with my senior friends and they were talking about how many books they read. I didn’t know that. And that got me thinking. Change course. Write a love story. Sort of a new hobby of the week. About dreams? My love of science fiction. Human nature. Nothing ordinary. Something out of this world. Out of this world? Sparklers flashed! Stardust Dreams was born. As I do, for several months I wrote the complete story in my head to make certain it was viable and interesting. Then I made it come alive on the pages.

* Lance Forrester is a dreamer. After a celebrated career as an astronaut and engineer, he and a friend build a secret spacecraft to seek their destinies in the stars. But his friend dies and Lance is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Desperate not to succumb to his fate, he convinces an acquaintance, ailing actress Sage Saint Claire, whom he hasn’t seen since high school, to join him on his quest to reach an advanced alien civilization which can heal them both.
* Unfortunately, true life is not a Hollywood movie, as much as Sage might want it to be, and problems abound. Mistakes in the past have turned Sage into a bitter old woman, and she turns out to be a less-than-perfect traveling companion which no amount of optimism, youth, or good health can cure. Can these two intrepid octogenarians-turned-immortals overcome the emotional scars of their pasts and achieve true happiness, or are they doomed to suffer for their mistakes, no matter how far from Earth they go?
~ Excerpt ~
* Lance visits Sage in Hospice Care. He is dying at well. Inspire her! “Your sympathy is appreciated, but I have no immediate plans of kicking the bucket here on Earth.” Hear goes. “On New Year’s Day, I’m traveling into the galaxy in my private spacecraft with the hope of reaching an advanced alien civilization that will extend my life. I would be honored if you would join me.”
* First, Sage gave me a look as if she’d just bitten into the foulest tasting food, then a burst of anxious laughter erupted from her unenthusiastic face. “That’s your hope?” She tried to hold back her mocking smirk, but couldn’t. Her defiant nature hardened to ice. “Now, why would I want to do that?”
* Lance and Sage awaken on an alien world. “Hi, Sage,” I said calmly. “It’s safe. You can come out. No monsters. Just friends. He doesn’t bite.”
* Despite my attempt to relieve her mounting worries, she was still wary and stepped cautiously out on the patio, her head nervously jerking about. She was wearing blue jeans and a pink blouse. “We’re on Earth---right? We’re back home?”
* My laugh was kind. “No Sage. We’re on the friendly planet of Pirodinos, some eight thousand light years from Earth.”
* “Bullshit! I know Earth when I see it,” she said nastily, apparently thinking I was deceiving her.
* “Then, you better take a good look. Look at the tree bark. The sky. I don’t believe the last time you were on Earth that it had more than one moon.”

* I knew that the truth in my heart reflected in my old, weary eyes. “Yes, I do. Look, I’m no slick-talking salesman, as you can see. I’m just a scientist and engineer, but I truly believe there is a statistical probability of success. But even if I’m wrong, and our voyage ends up to be pointless, so what? Think of the fun you’ll have. Imagine the excitement and wonders of space travel that come before our long sleep.” I paused to dramatize my resolve and let a burst of quixotic energy erupt from me. “Cherish the adventure!”
* It wasn’t her fears that I was battling against, but a lifetime of distrust. My confidence in a successful mission collapsed. “Of course, you have no reason to believe a word of what I’ve told you. You don’t really know me, except through my noted accomplishments. But I can’t disappoint you because I’m only offering friendship and hope.” I pushed my point harder. “Sure, we can die here on Earth. We can die in space. Or we can awaken on a remote and caring world that saves us! We are the captains of our fate, not the Grim Reaper—yet!”

A Top Ten Look At Nana Prah & 'Love Undercover' @NanaPrah @LoveBitesSilk #hispanicamerican #romance

Love Undercover by +Nana Prah
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Women’s Fiction (Sweet, Multicultural)
Publisher: Black Opal Books
Top 10 real life experiences in Love Undercover
One thing that many people don’t know is that Love Undercover is a romance based on an experience I had. Not the romance part, but the jail aspect. Without further delay I’d like to present 10 things that happen in Love Undercover that actually happened to me.
1. My first cellmate was awesome. We would laugh all the freaking time. We had similar personalities and loved to have fun. She was a bisexual, but didn’t fancy me. I’m a heterosexual, but I was like why not? Still laughing about that.
2. I butchered my eyebrows by attempting to shape them with thread. It was hilarious- even to me
3. I was strip searched after having a visit (It was not fun in the least)
4. There were some hot guards in that prison. But unfortunately I had no romantic liaisons with any of them (damn).
5. Many of the detainees stories in the book are true. I’ve dramatized them just a tad.
6. Most of what happened to one of the characters in the novel is what I went through, only I’ve never had a boob job (darn it).
7. Sarita and I had the same second cellmate, only there was no fight in real life. The devil part is true, though- very scary.
8. The library was awesome. No covert operations for me, even though it does happen in the system.
9. We baked a cake. To this day I still find it weird, but it’s true.
10. To the best of my knowledge there was no blind spot at the prison I was detained at. That came from my imagination so I could get some intimate scenes in there for Sarita and Matt.
So there you have it. If you have any questions on what else is true in Love Undercover once you read it, just contact me and I’ll let you know.
A look into the story
~ Blurb ~
The last thing she expects is to fall in love with a prison guard…
Hotshot Secret Service Agent, Sarita Cerez is thrown into a medium security prison—for work. Her job is to protect the daughter of the president of South Korea. She never envisioned making friends with illegal immigrants or falling head over heels for one of the guards. Now the clandestine activity, which is integral to protecting her charge, may destroy her only chance at love.
He's never fraternized with the inmates—until he met her…
* Matthew Carter always plays by the rules, which includes maintaining a strictly professional relationship with the inmates in his charge. But when Sarita saunters onto the unit, all bets are off. Her status as a deportee with a permanent ticket to Columbia means they can never be together, but try as he might, this doesn’t stop him from risking his career for her.
* He's a man who values honesty above all else, and she lies for a living. Can two people from such different worlds find any common ground?
* As they walked down the first flight of stairs, Sarita’s breath caught when she glanced at him. She missed her footing and would have gone head-over-ass down the steps if he hadn’t grabbed her.
* The heat emanating from Matt’s body seeped into her. “Thanks. You saved me from a nasty fall.”
* “You are so beautiful, Sarita.” His whispered words feathered over her cheek.
* She moved forward as his lips came down on hers in a crushing kiss. The impact brought tears to her eyes and a whimper to her throat. He eased the pressure. She took the light pecks as his apology.
* She desired his passion over such teasing gentleness. Her hand moved to the back of his head and held him against her mouth, opening for him as his tongue thrust in. She hung onto him for fear of tumbling down the stairs.
* Swinging her around, he lifted her onto the railing, wrapping her legs around him. His hardness met the juncture of her thighs. The need to feel more of him suffused her. She rocked her hips and squeezed him closer when he moaned.
* The sound of whistling broke through the haze. She eased her feet to the steps and they continued down the stairs as if she hadn’t been about to rip off his shirt.
* She held onto the railing so her wobbly legs wouldn’t slide out from under her. She chanced a glance up and saw the camera. How could she have forgotten where they were?
* He looked back at the space they’d just vacated and raised an eyebrow. “Blind spot,” he whispered. “Didn’t you know?”

Welcome special guest: author Alan Brenham ~ @alanbrenham @GoddessFish #Thriller #policeprocedurals

Those who know me know I'm an eclectic writer and reader, and along with romance, I love a dark, gritty read whether it comes in the form of horror, mystery, suspense, etc. I'm sure I'm not the only reader/writer like this, and it's one of the reasons I have guests of varying subjects visit my corner of the web.
Today I'm happy to welcome author Alan Brenham. Alan Brenham is the pseudonym of Alan Behr, an American author and attorney. He served as a law enforcement officer before earning a law degree. He worked first as a prosecutor then defense attorney for the next twenty-six years. His travels took him to several European and Middle Eastern countries, Alaska and almost every island in the Caribbean. While contracted to US military forces, he resided in Berlin, Germany for a few years. Alan and his wife, Lillian, currently live in the Austin, Texas area. He has authored two crime fiction books, Price of Justice and Cornered, and is working on a third titled Rampage.

So, Alan, what inspired you to become a writer?
* Inspiration came from a few different sources - the first being my experiences as a police officer and from cases I prosecuted or defended as an attorney. Police report writing about offenses was like drafting a non-fictional account of an event. As an attorney in a jury trial, a story had to be told to the jury using facts gleaned from testimony and exhibits. The next would be from the knowledge that other attorneys, such as David Baldacci and John Grisham, left law careers to write fiction. Reading novels by the former LA Times police beat writer, Michael Connelly, also inspired me.
* But the better question is who inspired me and the answer is my wife. She is my biggest supporter and cheerleader, encouraging me daily to write fiction.

When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
* My first fiction writing experience happened in 2010. It was a novel-length story that ended up buried deep inside a box stored under a stack of boxes in the garage, never to see the light of day.

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
* In addition to the above attempt, I made a second effort at a fiction novel that’s sitting on a shelf. I may revise it and offer it for publication sometime in the future.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
* The best piece: Write the first draft out to completion. Read it through without doing any revisions. Once done, go back through it and revise until the manuscript is as perfect as you can get it.
* The worst piece: Write your novel without an outline or character profiles. Basically you’re writing by the seat of your pants with no complete idea who your characters really are.

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
* Price of Justice is the first book in a series about Detective Jason Scarsdale and attorney Dani Mueller. The second book in the series is titled Rampage and is being written now.

What sparked the idea for the story/series?
* The core idea for Price of Justice arose from three cases I worked as a police officer and as an attorney. When I was a police officer, I caught an adult male in an alley, soliciting a teenager for sex.
* As an attorney, I represented a grandfather accused of child sexual assault. The case ended up being dismissed after the complaintant admitted to state officers that he had lied about the entire matter. The other case involved a pedophile who molested a very young girl.

*** Now for some fun info… ***
Would you/have you own(ed) a snake or some other exotic pet?
* The only exotic pet I ever owned/raised was a baby raccoon. He’d lay on his back, holding the small baby bottle with his paws (like hands) for his three daily feedings of milk.

Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
* I actually prefer cold weather at least for the summer months. Texas summers are like living in an over-heated sauna.

If you could live anywhere in the universe, where would it be and why?
* The best place to live, in my opinion, would be Alaska in the summer and the Garmisch area in Germany in the winter. The scenery in both locations at that time of the year is magnificent. The temperatures are tolerable and the food is great.

If you were stranded on a desert island and were only allowed to have five modern conveniences with you, what would they be?
* 1. Solar-powered phone/satellite phone; 2. A hunting rifle with a scope; 3. A solar-powered watch with day/date; 4. A solar-powered desalination unit; 5. A solar-powered lantern

*** About Alan Brenham’s book… ***

~ Blurb ~
* His focus is on solving the murders—until the unthinkable happens…
* Recently widowed, Austin Police Detective Jason Scarsdale works to solve the murders of two pedophiles, while trying to be both mother and father to his five-year-old daughter. During his investigation, Scarsdale is forced to navigate between the crosshairs of two police commanders out to get him. Drawn to Austin Police Crime Analyst, Dani Mueller, who has also suffered tragedy, Scarsdale fights both his attraction and his suspicions that something just isn’t right…
* She is hiding a secret, one that could not only cost her a job—it could end her life…
* Dani hides a deadly past. After her daughter was brutally murdered, Dani exacted her revenge then changed her name and fled to Austin. But if her secret ever gets out, she knows there is no place she can hide from the murderer’s vicious family.
* Pulled into a web of malice and deceit, Scarsdale and Dani discover the value of breaking the rules. Then just when they thought things couldn’t get worse…they do.
~ Excerpt ~
* Scarsdale trudged into the courthouse, flashing his badge so he could bypass security. He stopped at the rear of a throng of people maneuvering to get an elevator. He checked to see where the four elevators were—one was stopped on floor three, another just arrived at the fifth floor and two seemed stuck on Eight. People elbowed their way closer to the doors—even he got jostled. A distinct odor of alcohol, mixed with cheap perfume and a trace of marihuana, made him sneeze a couple of times.
* Looking around, Scarsdale didn’t recognize anyone connected with his dreaded hearing. He leaned against the wall and let his thoughts drift. The events of the past five years flashed through his mind. The wedding Marcy refused to attend. Then Charity’s funeral—the second time Marcy had seen Shannon since she was born—gushing over her granddaughter, telling Shannon how much she missed her. Scarsdale stopped outside the big wooden courtroom doors. He stared at the brass door handles. What will the judge decide?
* His heart hammered against his chest. Taking a couple of deep breaths and swallowing hard, he pulled the courtroom doors open.
