At the bar, I ordered brandy, swallowed a sip, and then took the curved stairs up to the VIP area. Men sat on dark leather sofas arranged so they overlooked the main jam-packed club area below. I found a single-seater armchair in the corner of the lounge to perch on, my back to the wall.
I never liked sitting in a room with my back exposed. I preferred to see trouble before it found me. Problems were never far away, vacation or not.
From here, I watched male dancers in nothing but jockstraps on raised, caged platforms dotted around the club, sweat and glitter making their toned bodies glisten.
After tossing back the shot, I caught the eye of a young waiter who sauntered over and took my refill order. Waiting for the drink, I took my time to survey the other people in the lounge. A group of three thirty-something-year-old men sat in the section next to mine. Two of them looked like a couple by the way they touched each other.
The third met my gaze and flashed a set of white teeth as he smiled. Arching his brow and lifting his hand, he enquired if he could come over. He was good-looking with dark- brown hair and a well-built body under the t-shirt. Even his trousers seemed to hide a reasonably-sized shaft.
I tried to picture holding the man down, kicking out his legs and taking him over the table. My cock gave an unenthusiastic twitch. I was still too tense to entertain company. With an almost imperceptible shake of my head, I dissuaded him from getting up. The man shrugged and tipped his drink in salute.
The waiter brought my refill. I took a sip and relaxed into the leather chair, welcoming the gentle alcoholic haze in my mind that stripped away my agitation. My gaze trawled, exploring every male form in sight.
Another group of men sat a few sofas away. These were younger than me, too fresh-faced to be nothing more than just barely legal. Boisterous, they talked and laughed in loud voices, drawing attention.
I spotted him and my world skewed.
The boy—he appeared more boy than man—was whispering something to the person sitting next to him, when his blond lashes lifted in a slow, teasing manner.
My heart stopped and my skin prickled. If I wasn’t usually cool under duress, I would’ve been drooling.
The lad was what? Twenty? Twenty-one? Cute as hell in a smart mint-green polo shirt and navy trousers made of expensive shiny fabric that clung to a lean body. He came across as prep-school material and looked young enough to still be in college. Face like a fucking angel, dirty blond hair that flopped over his face, and pink lips that pouted in the way fashion models did.
I had no problem picturing the gioventù on his knees, that mouth stretched around my girth.
As he rose from the sofa, his dark and huge eyes shone with mischief. One of his friends laughed and lowered his head toward the low table, a rolled note in his right hand.
Columns of white powder lined the glass-topped surface and the man leaned over, sniffing half of the line before he straightened and repeated the action with the other nostril. Finally, he tilted his head back, pinching his nose.
My lip curled down, my jaw tightened, and I averted my gaze. The drug remained illegal, but just like homosexuality, it was freely available in Exilado for the right price.
I shouldn’t begrudge the young men their vices any more than I should condemn myself for having sex with other men. Still, I couldn’t help the weight of disappointment that settled on my shoulders. I’d seen the damage addictive drugs could wreck on perfectly normal lives. I’d taken an oath to keep the toxic substances out of Vincenzo territories. San Torino wasn’t my turf and there was nothing I could do other than ignore the young men snorting the white powder.
"Can I buy you a drink?" Blond boy had ambled over and stood only inches away, his lips curled in a ten kilo-watt smile.
My gaze held captivating eyes of dark green. For a moment, I forgot my disgust at what I’d just seen the gioventù’s friend do and simply admired the specimen before me. The flawless skin, the perfect nose, and the slender body of a person on the cusp of manhood made me increasingly aware of my own increasing heart beat.
Damn. He was beautiful. I didn’t think I’d ever described another man with such a word, which reminded me exactly why the lad wasn’t my type. I liked them tougher than he looked. Not delicate. Not someone I had to worry about breaking.
"I've got a drink." I gave a gruff reply and lifted my glass to my lips but I might as well have been drinking water as all my senses honed in on the person in front of me.
Undeterred, the boy lowered his body in the chair opposite and extended his hand. "I'm Carl. It’s a pleasure to meet you."
I stared at the manicured, slender fingers that didn't look as if they'd seen a day's labour, reinforcing the feeling Carl wasn't for me. It didn't stop me from picturing them stroking my skin as my cock sprang to life.
"I didn't invite you to join me." My tone remained cool, in contrast to the heat riding my blood.
"You didn't."
"I'm not interested."
"I bet I could make you interested." Carl leaned across and settled his hand on my thigh.

Jeremy Flagg & 'Nighthawks' @writeremyflagg @GoddessFish #Dystopian #SciFi

Today we have author Jeremy Flagg visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* I’m high school graphic design and marketing teacher, at a large suburban high school in Massachusetts. Working as a high school educator and observing the outlandish world of adolescence was the inspiration for my first young adult novel, “Suburban Zombie High.”
* My inspiration for writing stems from being a youth who struggled with reading in school. While I found school assigned novels incredibly difficult to digest, I devoured comics and later fantasy novels. Their influences can be seen in the tall tales I spin.
* I took the long route to becoming a writer. For a brief time, I majored in Creative Writing but exchanged one passion for another as I switched to Art and Design. My passion for reading about superheroes, fantastical worlds, and panic-stricken situations would become the foundation of my writing career.
* I participated in my first NaNoWriMo in 2006 and continue to write an entire novel every November. Now I am the NaNoWriMo Municipal Liaison to the Massachusetts Metrowest Region. I also belong the New England Horror Writer’s Association and to a weekly writing group, the Metrowest Writers.

Today Jeremy Flagg will be talking about a character from Nighthawks.
* Conthan Cowan is a small piece of who I was many years ago. He’s twenty-six when the story begins for him and he’s an artist trying to make a name for himself in the New York art scene. He has a great group of friends who jostle, joke, and support him as he gets his first gallery show. He’s hopeful, he’s sarcastic, and most of all, the future looks bright for him.
* Then I put him through the ringer. Conthan quickly sees that his life as he’s known it is going to change forever. He no longer has time to be innocent and naive to the world around him. He’s thrust into a dangerous situation and he has to find a way to survive. His survival is less about him fighting his way out of harm, but more trying to figure out what he is and isn’t willing to do for his own safety. As his morals are tested, he finds himself stepping down off this self-righteous pedestal and getting his hands dirty. He finds himself doing things he would have originally said were wrong. Conthan has to face his definition of right and wrong.
* I love Conthan because we get to watch his descent from an idealist to a more practical version of himself. The stressors he’s faced with are far beyond anything he had ever imagined before and he’s finding ways to cope with it. The ways he copes aren’t what he expected and when pushed too far, he discovers there is a dark side to his personality that he had never encountered before.
* What Conthan taught me as I wrote Children of Nostradamus: Nighthawks is that there is seldom a situation that is strictly black and white. That fine line that we are often determined to not cross is flexible and we need to compromise. However, there are things that happen to him throughout the story that show us that sometimes, that line is imaginary and needs to be shattered entirely. This idea that our superheroes are strictly good or bad is a myth and he discovers what he originally thought would be cut and dry isn’t.
* The book looks at his humanity and what he is willing to sacrifice to protect those he cares about. His darker self is discovered and I can see that each person has that and only in times of peril will they have to assess their own humanity. I have no idea what is in store for Conthan as the series continues, but I see him blurring the line between good and bad and pushing the boundaries of what he is willing to do to save himself and those he loves.
A look into...

* Twenty-six-year-old painter Conthan Cowan takes art to a shocking frontier…
* His debut exhibit features the transformation of his high school friend, Sarah, as she went from a shy, soft-spoken girl to a Child of Nostradamus—an individual gifted with extraordinary abilities. Living in a society where the Children of Nostradamus are captured by the government, Conthan’s exhibit draws attention from officials and protesters alike.
* A government psychic may be dead, but that doesn’t stop her from manipulating the future…
* The deceased White House aide is only remembered for her failed assassination attempt on the president decades before Conthan was born. Foreseeing her own death, she scribed letters to bring together specific Children of Nostradamus on a mission that will change the world.
* On the night of the gallery exhibition, Conthan receives one of those letters…
* Whispers from the past direct him to visit Sarah, the subject of his paintings, who like many Children of Nostradamus, is being detained in a government research facility. It’s there he finds himself aligned with a rogue group of Children on a mission to prevent a dark future.
* As a dark future unfolds, there's only one hope to stop the destruction of the world...
* The Children of Nostradamus.

* “…Seabrook, New Hampshire is gone. If you’re just tuning in, the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant has just exploded. We have no word yet on what caused the explosion, but we do know there was a catastrophe resulting in failure of the systems at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant.”
* “God help them,” said the woman at the news desk.
* He could hear Elizabeth gasp at the announcement. His mind was moving a million miles an hour. His wife, still covered in sweat and grime from giving birth, his newborn son, his office calling him to alert him to the news, all of it caused his head to swim. He was unsure of what his next move would be.
* The television flickered and turned to static. Mark reached up and smacked the side of the box. The static began to take the shape of a person. He stepped back to see the solid outline of a man on the TV.
* “United States of America,” said a voice through the static, “land of the free and home of the brave. We are calling out your discreet operations. We know all about The Culling. Individuals who for years have been in your employ, using their more-than-human abilities to further your goals, will not die in vain. Killing empaths, slaughtering clairvoyants, and the genocide of telepaths will be responded to in kind.”
* “Eleanor,” he said in a hushed voice as he realized what they were talking about.
* “The United States has declared war on the wrong people. We can see you coming. We can hear your plans. We will not be eliminated. You’ve seen our reach.”

Sally Mitchell & 'Eden: The Eighth Day' @sallymitchell17 @GoddessFish #DystopianFantasy

Today we have author Sally Mitchell visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* I was brought up in a small country village in North Yorkshire, UK. I had always been brought up to work hard and to push myself, skills which came in useful for writing the Eighth Day. I suppose it also helped that I’ve always been a huge bookworm with a love of all things fantasy and all things romance. Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favourite.
* Granted those genres are miles apart but I find something incredibly romantic about escaping to a world that has been lovingly created by an author. I enjoy trying to connect with them through their imagination, wondering where they were and what they were doing when they developed such magical worlds.
* Writing my own novel was the best experience I’ve ever had career wise, and it makes the struggles I have faced in my past careers all worth the while.
* After losing my career as a nurse following a car accident, I began a promising psychology career, even winning an award for my undergraduate degree. However, I became a single parent three years ago and sacrificed another dream to set up a laundry and ironing business, which enabled me to be at home with my son.
* Despite many commitments, a further relationship breakdown and 3 family bereavements, I was determined to develop a rewarding career and make my little man proud.
* That’s when I decided to begin a writing career and I developed the Eden Saga. Such a path enabled me to stay at home and give him all the extra support he needed whilst also having something for myself.
* I’m now the happiest I’ve ever been, I’m closer to my son than ever and I’ve finally released my novel as an e-book which is available on all major platforms.

Today Sally Mitchell will be talking about what sparked the idea for the story/series.
* The idea for ‘Eden: The Eighth Day’ was a natural process really. I don’t remember any spectacular lightbulb moment, rather a combination of different influences which lead me to an idea that I was happy with. When I decided to become an author I initially had a plan for another story, and Eden was developed initially as a practice piece, only the story took on a life of its own. I read somewhere that you should write about what you know and for me my expertise lay in astrology.
* This was the first step. The original plan was to write something with a much stronger astrological theme than Eden possesses, but when you begin writing and planning one idea leads to another and suddenly you have a jigsaw of ideas that need to somehow fit together.
* The next step was to think about something that I would be able to complete, something which would keep me interested. If I didn’t enjoy writing it, I couldn’t expect the readers to enjoy reading it. I thought about my favourite novels; The Da Vinci Code, Game of Thrones, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, anything with zombies or supernatural themes, and an old favourite, Pride and Prejudice and decided to write something to try and combine the different genres. This is why I chose a dystopian horror with mystery, magic, religion and romance, all my favourite genre’s rolled into one.
* Once I had decided this, the ideas started to flow and before I knew it I had an idea so complex I realised that the idea of a one off practice piece was long gone. Eden would have to be written as a series. I decided to learn what I could about the writing process, wrote some short stories and used some critique sites to improve my writing and then set to it. And as they say, the rest is history.

~ Blurb ~
* Welcome to Mendacia; The city of lies. Saved from a divine apocalypse, its citizens now starve. They are trapped beneath a fire-lit sky and surrounded by a molten river, all to pay for the sins of their ancestors.
* The gods cursed the original generation with eternal life so that their skin would rot and their pain would always remind them of their own horrific crimes.
* These demons now serve the tyrant emperor, Malum Dolus who uses them to terrorise the citizens, all in the name of maintaining order.
* One woman, Vita Dulcas has had enough of his evil ways, but what could she possibly do to help the citizens? They love Malum and hate her, suspecting her of witchcraft after her survival of deadly snake bites. All she can do is stay invisible.
* That is until she finds herself backed into a corner and all she can do is fight. Suddenly, she has more power than she could have ever imagined and it becomes clear she is Mendacia’s last hope.
* If only she could make the citizens see the truth.
~ Excerpt ~
* ‘But then he turned. Vita jumped with the motion, praying she didn’t look as hopeless as she felt, but as his head turned, his eyed skimmed past the lamb and landed on her own, searing into them as if nothing had ever changed. The darkness behind those beautiful eyes was a harsh reminder now though. A reminder of the awful secret they shared. She remembered looking up lovingly into those eyes - how wrong she had been. How dangerous he truly was. The ignorance of vanity, she thought.’
* ‘One by one, more of the citizens scaled the walls, marching a slow and silent trail through the remains of the battle, each to pay their own respects to the man who had taken on the demons and given them the hope of freedom.
* With a cough, Empress Vesta began to speak from the balcony. ‘This has been a truly terrible day,’ she said. ‘One which will, I’m sure, weigh on our minds and hearts for some time to come. But, I decree that this man deserves a respectable death. Who will carry his body to the palace?’
* Nico’s hand shot in the air, his other clasped on his chest. ‘I will.’
* ‘And me,’ said Kayin, pulling himself to his feet.
* ‘Me too,’ said the Survivor.
* ‘Yes,’ said another citizen.
* ‘Aye,’ said Domine Agil from behind Vesta.
* She gazed down to see the sea of her citizens nodding and raising their hands, all eager to pay the man his final respects. She watched her son, the Survivor and Nico haul Theo’s body into the air. Another citizen helped to support his leg and the four of them began a slow exit from the arena, the brave sinner above their shoulders.’
* ‘Vita let the curtain drop behind her and walked confidently onto the balcony. She held her hands behind her back and stopped in the centre, standing silently for a moment to survey the faces below her. Some, she had seen before, others were strangers. Family men, drunkards, men of high and low standing, young boys and even arthritic old men, all here in an attempt to buy her and take her freedom.
* She could feel her heart quickening and for a moment wondered what she was doing. She couldn’t see the Bilo brothers, which gave her cause for relief. A whistle echoed around the yard, followed by an eruption of laughter from the group of her potential husbands. She remained still, letting the sounds wash over her.
* ‘Just come to give us a taster ‘av yer love?’ She gazed down at the toothless source of torment and waited patiently for the ensuing laughter to die down.
* ‘Gentlemen,’ she began to speak slowly. ‘I stand before you today with faith. Faith in the goodness in each of you. I see many different faces below me. I see men I have known and respected, hardworking men, family men and loyal men. I see long standing friends of my father, people who I used to feel protected by. I see people who, like me, have suffered in this land. And I wonder if it is fear that makes such good men gather here today? You label me a witch, but you can see my flesh is just as vulnerable as yours. If I am cut I will bleed. I am not the one to fear.’
* ‘The sound of her mother’s dying scream echoed through Vita’s mind and everything stopped. Time seemed not to exist and with pure clarity only one thought surfaced: they must die. She barely felt the tension of the rusted chain as her wrists snapped the metal, with enough force to send her body backwards.
* She watched as the pole splintered clean in two with the impact of the flail, right where her head would have been. The demon panicked and pulled the flail free, bringing it down again towards her. She couldn’t move fast enough this time and her hands came up, palms forward to protect her skull. She waited for the impact.
* A few seconds passed and she heard a confused grunt. She dared to open an eye and stared, stunned. Her hands were emitting a sort of white/blue light, bright enough to light up the entire room. She gazed in wonder at the flail which had stopped mere millimetres from her palms and was floating calmly in circles. The demon pulled the weapon, but somehow his efforts were hopeless. The flail was stuck fast. She reached out with lightning reactions, grabbing it from the demon’s rotten hands and she could feel the centuries of cruelty the instrument had yielded. The light vanished, leaving only the darkness once more.’
