PG Excerpt ~
They ambled along in silence. The sky faded from its fiery colors into a deep indigo. Pinpricks of starlight dotted the darkening blanket of space. As the minutes passed, Orion’s belt brightened. A flash of silver streaked across the heavens.
“Did you see that?” he asked, his voice vibrated with excitement. Maybe now she’d lighten up.
“Yeah.”
He wanted to sigh in frustration but held the breath back. Her tone had held a hint of curiosity in it. Perhaps the ice encasing her was melting. Holding the bit of hope close to his heart, he took advantage of the opportunity the shooting star represented. “We need to make wishes.”
She tilted her head back, her face pointing to the night sky. A brief, startled expression crossed her features. It occurred so fast he wasn’t sure he’d actually seen it. A tiny smile played at the corners of her lips.
A strange, disjointed sensation swept through him. Memories tapped at the edges of his mind. Everything seemed so familiar to him, he wondered if what he was experiencing was what people meant by déjà vu.
Children’s laughter in the distance carried to them on the breeze, carried him into a long forgotten recollection.
The girl with the braces and the light brown hair
What was her name? No matter how hard he tried, the name wouldn’t come.
She was with me after a football game. The spectators and the two of us were all having such great time, laughing, joking, singing. After all, the home team had won. I was walking her home when we’d seen a shooting star. She squealed in glee and said we needed to make wishes. The girl mentioned that they both had to think about the wishes, but couldn’t speak them because if they did, the wishes wouldn’t come true. I didn’t really believe in all that, but her happiness was important. I went along with her. She’d gazed into my eyes, and I couldn’t help myself. I kissed her. A brief brush of our lips, but the light contact had made my heart soar.
He wondered what happened to her and wished he could remember her name.
“Philip?”
Blinking, he turned his head toward the voice. “Hmm?”
“You zoned there for a second. Or were you just making your wish?” She snickered. “Wishing on a star. It seems kind of silly to do such a thing.”
“Why is it silly? Don’t you believe in making wishes on falling stars?”
She shrugged a shoulder, gazed at him with her big, stormy eyes, licked her full rosy lips. The small actions lit a desirous fire within him. He struggled with what to do next. In previous similar circumstances, he had no qualms about making a move, advancing a relationship, but with Cassandra his instincts cried caution, said to exercise resistance.  Then again, nothing was ever gained by not taking chances. To hell with playing it safe.
