A Look At Shane Hayes & 'The Last Dreamgirl' @ShaneHayes732 @GoddessFish #Psychological #Thriller

Today we have author Shane Hayes visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* A native Philadelphian, Shane Hayes earned his bachelor’s and his law degree from Villanova University, and studied for a year at Princeton Theological Seminary. He worked as a writer/editor for Prentice Hall and an attorney for the federal government. He is married, has four children, and lives in suburban Philadelphia. His nonfiction book The End of Unbelief: A New Approach to the Question of God was released by Leafwood Publishers in the fall of 2014.
* Two young men meet on ship when both are recently out of college. They share a flaming ambition. Each aims to write novels that will be internationally acclaimed and win him a place in American letters. One of them, Paul Theroux, achieves the dream in all its glory: becomes world famous, writes over 40 books, and three of his novels are made into films. The other, Shane Hayes, fails completely, but keeps tenaciously writing, decade after decade, plowing on through hundreds of rejections. Then almost half a century later, Shane contacts Paul, who remembers him, reads three of his books, likes them, and praises them with endorsements.
* In writing to agents and publishers Shane could now say, “Query for a novel praised by Paul Theroux.” No one offers a book deal because of an endorsement, so rejections keep coming. But more people let him send at least a sample and are predisposed to see merit in it. At his age, time is crucial. In the month he turns 75, Shane receives contracts on two of his books from different publishers. He will always be grateful to the literary giant who remembered ten days of friendship half-a-lifetime after it ended.

What are you going to tell us about today?
* My story, The Last Dreamgirl.
A look into...
~ Blurb ~
* For every man there’s a girl who grips his imagination and his heart as no other girl ever did or will. She may be in her teens or a mature woman. He responds to her as a boy to a girl. Whether she comes early in his life or late, there is a throne in his subconscious that she takes possession of, without trying, often without wanting to.The image he forms of her reigns there in perpetuity, even if she has left his life, or this life. Her enchantment never fades or fails, and he is never immune to it. She may not be for him the last wife or paramour, but she is the last dreamgirl.
~ Excerpt ~
* Traffic was light enough that Ron could pull out and follow Bower, a car or two behind. Bower drove to a local Acme supermarket, parked, grabbed a pushcart, and went in to shop.
* Ron did the same. While he avoided trailing Bower through the aisles he effectively followed him by going down aisles that Bower was coming up, and sometimes pausing near Bower to search for products on one side of the aisle while Bower was scanning the shelves on the other side. Viewing the man’s features at close range Ron had no doubt that this was the Vulture. Ron got so close to him in the drug and cosmetics aisle that he made two notable observations. First, from a sharp side angle Bower’s deformed eye-placement could be seen under his dark glasses. Second, he was working from two shopping lists—which seemed to be in different handwriting. At a glance Ron perceived one as a small neat feminine hand, written in blue ink, and the other as a larger, though equally neat, hand—probably masculine—in pencil.
* Ron’s heart leaped at the thought that the penned shopping list had been written by Sandra Moore. But he knew how much he wanted to find evidence of her being alive in Bower’s house and feared he might have seen what he wanted to see. Seconds after the observation, when he had moved down the aisle, he began to question it.
* The fact that both lists were so neatly written made him doubt that they were done by different hands. The pencil versus ink could have created that illusion; and sometimes one’s mood and the size of the paper can prompt one to write smaller than usual....
* Ron’s doubts about handwriting were resolved when he made his next pass of Bower’s cart near the feminine hygiene shelves and saw in it a box of women’s sanitary napkins. Why in God’s name would Bower be buying Kotex if he lived alone? There had to be a woman there and a menstruating woman at that. Ron couldn’t check but would be willing to bet that the Kotex had been written on the blue-ink shopping list in what had first struck him as a feminine hand. It was a feminine hand, and he would lay odds that it was Sandra’s.
* Ron got right behind Bower in the checkout line and noticed that he had also bought a woman’s scented bath powder, a feminine underarm deodorant, and a supply of hairpins. Ron had to resist an impulse to cry out in joy and triumph. None of the female items were things a young man would bring to a girl he was dating. None was the equivalent of a bouquet, a box of candy, or a bottle of perfume. These were things a man would typically pick up for his wife or mistress, a woman he was living with. Or a girl he held captive.

* In the blink of an eye, she’s married, has a new baby, and life is grand.
* Or is it?

His behavior is recklessly erratic, and the unanswered questions about his past now hint at something far more sinister than Ava can stomach. Before she can fit the pieces together, Mitchell files for divorce and demands full custody of their boys.
* Fueled by fierce love for her children and aided by Graham Thomas, a new attorney in town —Ava takes matters into her own hands, digging deep into the past. But will finding the truth be enough to beat Mitchell at his own game?
* Center of Gravity weaves a chilling tale, revealing the unfailing and dangerous truth that things—and people—are not always what they seem.
~ Excerpt ~
* The road rushes under the wheels. I rearrange snippets of the frantic conversation. Gash. Some blood. Breathing fine. Emergency room. A few more miles to the hospital.
* I flash back to this morning. Packed sack lunch, flop of dark hair across his bare forehead, navy backpack slung over one shoulder. A surge of pure love courses through my heart. A stab of worry steals my breath. I force myself to focus.
* The traffic light ahead flashes green to yellow. Intersection’s clear. I push the accelerator to the floor, glance in the rearview mirror. Air from the open window catches Sam’s wisps of hair. He smiles, showing off his first few baby teeth, and reaches a chubby hand at the rays of sunshine streaking by, trying to catch the light.
* Thump. Thump. The Jeep jerks to the left. I guide the wheel, hold it steady, and take my foot off the gas. When I pull over and brake, the abrupt stop sends up a dust cloud.
* “Uh-oh,” Sam says.
* I unbuckle, jump out, and survey the damage. A glance at the tire confirms it. Flat. Dead.
* Hands on my hips, I bite my lip.
* Tentatively, I grab the jack from the back of the Jeep, the weight of it solid and heavy in my hands. I can fix this. After all, in my former life, as a school counselor at Mobile Prep, I was the problem-solver, crisis manager, and shoulder to cry on. I always handled situations. And I didn’t need help.
* Then my eyes fall on Sam as he babbles and blows bubbles in the back seat. I hesitate, gripping the metal between my palms. As the sun beats down on us, heating my skin, my pulse begins to race. Maybe I was fearless because I didn’t know any better. I wasn’t a mom then. I didn’t have two children depending on me. Trusting me to do the right thing, be on time, and not screw up.

Alli Marshall & 'How to Talk to Rockstars' @alli_marshall @GoddessFish #literary #music

Today we have author Alli Marshall visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Alli Marshall grew up in Western New York and has called the mountains of North Carolina home for more than 20 years. She's a Warren Wilson College graduate and completed her MFA in creative writing at Goddard College. She's been named the best arts reporter in Western North Carolina in the annual Best of WNC reader's poll, 2011-2014. She received awards in editorial reporting from the North Carolina Press Association in 2005 and 2014, and from the International Festivals & Events Association in 2004. She also took home top honors in the Cupcakes for the Cure bake-off (local ingredient category) — but that’s another story. And though Alli doesn't like to brag or anything, over the course of her career she's interviewed Yoko Ono, Cyndi Lauper, Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), Aimee Mann, Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), Britt Daniel (Spoon), Michael Franti, Neko Case, Daniel Lanois, Ziggy Marley, Peter Murphy, Grace Potter, Jamie Lidell, Kishi Bashi and many, many others.

Today Alli Marshall will be talking about how she handles balancing life and writing.
* My thoughts on balancing life and writing are kind of at odds. On one hand, I believe in seeking balance in life. Healthy eating, daily exercise, relaxation, plenty of rest and the disciple to stick to that program. But I'm also a realist and I think that the whole balanced life concept is is a bit of a sham. Who out there is actually pulling it off? At the end of the day, I think that idea (along with good family relationships, friendly exes and enjoying green tea) are just there for us to aspire to and fall short of.
* So I don't really balance my writing and non-writing lives. My new novel, How to Talk to Rockstars, was written in bits and pieces over the course of a year. I did set up daily goals of 500-1,000 words while writing, and 10 pages while editing. And because I'm a task master, I stuck to those goals. But different writers make it work in different ways. There are those who works set hours, or write a set number of pages. Then there are those who write like mad when inspiration strikes and walk away from it when the ideas stop flowing. In art there’s simply no right way, and while learning about the techniques that others use can be helpful, the successes of others — and methods to reach those successes — should never be used as a measuring stick of our own shortcomings.
* The thing about writing is that, even when it's going well, it's hard. It's difficult to access that world and unlock its particular language; and it's hard to leave it behind, too. But endeavoring to reach that world — bushwacking if need be, because the creative landscape is a jungle rather than a neatly manicured garden — is worthwhile work. Sometimes just getting to the starting point is the most harrowing part of the adventure, and the writing hasn’t even started yet.
* Here’s a passage from How to Talk to Rockstars in which the main character, Bryn (a music journalist) tried to get in the head of one of the musicians she’s interviewing:
*** Bryn wonders how. How can Sid Holmes open himself up to a roomful of strangers each night? There’s no time for the usual detective work, the clues that divide strangers into groups: Potential friends and people who could never be your friends.
*** Maybe he doesn’t discern. There’s no time for discernment, only time to be open, to let it all in. The rest of the night, alone in a hotel room, and the following day, alone in a car, heading to the next town — that’s the time for putting the guard back up.
*** But who needs their guard up when they’re all alone?
*** So, maybe Sid Holmes lives without the guard up.
* Bryn, I came to realize in the process of creating her story, is in the business of writing about heroes, because rockstars are our modern-day heroes. But it’s Bryn who is on a hero’s journey, and her adventure, both physical and emotional, kind of reflects the journey of the writer.
* There’s a lot of time spent alone, a lot of internal dialog, a lot of self-doubt and overcoming the smallness of the self in order to achieve the greatness of the mission.
* So, balance? Not so much. If it happens, fantastic. If not, go where the road leads. Someone with a less momentous task at hand can worry about balance.

A look into the story
~ Blurb ~
* "How to Talk to Rockstars" — think "Almost Famous" meets "The History of Love" — follows wallflower-turned-journalist Bryn Thompson. She has a dream job: she interviews rock stars. Bryn’s professionalism keeps her on track, but also emotionally removed from the gritty world of back stage, bars and drugs that she writes about. That is, until she meets musician Jude Archer, whose songs haunt her. As an unlikely friendship grows out of Bryn’s obsession with Jude’s album, Bryn begins to rethink all of the carefully-contrived rules that until now have helped her maintain a professional distance.
~ Excerpt ~
* The day that Bryn bought Jude Archer’s album, Fly By Night, online and downloaded it to the playlist on her work computer — that was an ordinary day. It was three days before her birthday. She was working late. She’d just learned that she would have to work on her birthday, and the project was a dull grind. Her coffee had gone lukewarm in its tall ceramic mug.
* The tracks appeared in order, summoned from some distant world. Bryn dropped the headset over her ears and clicked play. The world outside the headphones stood still. Blood beating in her ears, rivulets of rain streaking the picture window, outside a blurred watercolor. Everything and the absence of everything. A ballet of shapes and shapelessness.
* Wanting seems so harmless at first, the way it feels like an old familiar ache, comfortable as pajamas. The way it feels good to return to a previous sadness, to sink into the soft gloom.
* The way he spoke of love, always losing, always chasing, always wanting.
* The songs held her captive from the first. She simply sat and watched the rain and listened. That was all. They were not acquaintances then, Bryn and Jude. They were two people in two separate bubbles. Bryn in her dusk-darkened office, Jude just a voice coming through the headphones. It didn’t occur to her to wonder what he looked like, or his age or where he was from. Usually the back story was at the front of her mind. A journalist’s habit. But Jude was a song first and a man later.

What are you going to tell us about today?
* My literary fiction story: Permanent Spring Showers.
A look into the story
~ Blurb ~
* Professor Rebecca Stanley-Wilson is having a very bad season. The ramifications of one torrid evening with one of the great upcoming painters of his generation, will not only be felt across her life but over the entire art world. Sexy, funny, and very surprising, Permanent Spring Showers is the tale of one very memorable springtime and how it impacts a group of unique artists and dreamers. From the the hopeful Olympian with the failing marriage to the writer who is creating a new literary movement (through outright manipulation) to the romantic wondering what he did wrong to drive away the love of his life, each tale walks the line between reality and fantasy. And waiting at the end of the line is a very important painting... and possibly the revolver used in the Lincoln Assassination.
~ Excerpt ~
* “You’re going to be fine, aren’t you, Steve?” A male voice with a British accent said behind me as I scanned the restaurant for the person I once considered my soulmate.
* “Like warm applesauce,” I mumbled in reply, not bothering to turn around and face Vince.
* Vince is my age and has a resumé an arm’s length long, painter, poet, performance artist, etc.; and he looks the part for all of those roles, from his black trench coat with the collar up to the tight shirt with an obscure artistic expression on it to the jeans with the holes that are a little too perfect. He has black hair, blue eyes, and from what every girl tells me, he is frightfully handsome. Hanging out with him can make a person feel like a pre-destined wingman, chosen by a maker never to be the center of attention. Oh, by coincidence, I met Vince at the creative writing course I mentioned earlier. He spent the entire time correcting the teacher and even once he stood on his desk screaming about romantic literature (I still don’t understand half of what he said), the whole class was sure he came in drunk that day, but he might’ve been acting. There is a lot of acting around Vince. Did I mention he’s pretending to be British right now? And no, I don’t mean RIGHT now, I mean for the last four months right now.
* “Applesauce?” His accent rising a little in confusion.
* I didn’t bother to say anything more to him because I had found her; and, shit, she still looked like a fallen angel.

A Look At Michael Hurley & 'The Vineyard' @GoddessFish #Literary #Suspense

Those who know me, know I am a very eclectic reader, and I like to highlight a variety of authors on my blog. Today I'm happy to welcome author Michael Hurley. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Michael Hurley and his wife Susan live near Charleston, South Carolina. Born and raised in Baltimore, Michael holds a degree in English from the University of Maryland and law from St. Louis University.
* The Prodigal, Michael’s debut novel from Ragbagger Press, received the Somerset Prize for mainstream fiction and numerous accolades in the trade press, including Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, ForeWord Reviews, BookTrib, Chanticleer Reviews, and IndieReader. It is currently in development for a feature film by producer Diane Sillan Isaacs. Michael’s second novel, The Vineyard, is due to be released by Ragbagger Press in December 2014.
* Michael’s first book, Letters from the Woods, is a collection of wilderness-themed essays published by Ragbagger Press in 2005. It was shortlisted for Book of the Year by ForeWord magazine. In 2009, Michael embarked on a two-year, 2,200 mile solo sailing voyage that ended with the loss of his 32-foot sloop, the Gypsy Moon, in the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti in 2012. That voyage and the experiences that inspired him to set sail became the subject of his memoir, Once Upon A Gypsy Moon, published in 2013 by Hachette Book Group.
* When he is not writing, Michael enjoys reading and relaxing with Susan on the porch of their rambling, one-hundred-year-old house. His fondest pastimes are ocean sailing, playing piano and classical guitar, cooking, and keeping up with an energetic Irish terrier, Frodo Baggins.

What are you going to tell us about today?
* My literary, mystery, thriller, suspense story, The Vineyard and ten things most people don't know about me.
1. My father left our family when I was two. My mother had only a high school education, but she loved to write and taught herself to type. She would edit and type the stories I wrote as a child. We were not poor, but we didn’t have much money. When I sold my first magazine article at seventeen and received a check for $45 in the mail, she kept the money to pay our electric bill.
2. Hank Bauer, the ex-Yankee and manager of the 1966 World Champion Baltimore Orioles, was my next door neighbor. After the O’s won the World Series, I got him to sign a baseball for me. My friends and I promptly went to the sandlot and played a game with it. I have no idea what happened to the ball.
3. I was a student of classical piano at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore before I was expelled for refusing to play anything but jazz and blues. I later formed “The Hurley Trio” with a stand up base player and drummer, playing standards and jazz in college at cocktail parties and in a bar.
4. I was a midfielder on the 1977 NCAA Division III Championship Lacrosse Team, Mid-Atlantic Conference, the year Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) was undefeated.
5. For eight years between 1995 and 2003, I wrote and published a quarterly literary journal on wilderness canoeing named Hurley’s Journal. It started as something for friends and family, but I started selling subscriptions when a friend sent me $10 in the mail and asked me to keep sending him copies. By the time the last issue appeared eight years later, I had more than 10,000 subscribers in 48 states. The essays I wrote for each issue were collected into my first book, Letters from the Woods, which was shortlisted for Book of the Year by ForeWord Magazine.
6. I qualified for my Coast Guard license as a sailboat charter captain in 1992 and moved to New Bern, North Carolina. There I became friends with a pharmaceutical sales rep named Nick Sparks and his wife Cathy, who went sailing with me. After Nick wrote The Notebook and became instantly world famous, he called me one day. His editor wanted to change a sailing scene in one of his books, because he didn’t think the hero could leave the helm of the sailboat to go below and make love to the woman. I explained to Nick the procedure to “heave to” the helm so that the boat sails itself while the skipper does other things. He got to keep the scene.
7. I am the youngest by ten years of four children and was absolutely spoiled rotten by two older sisters. My mother worked two jobs, and because my sisters were so busy getting me ready for school and out the door every morning, they never had time to wait for me to do anything. I don’t think I learned how to dress myself or tie my shoes until I was eight.
8. I sailed a 32-foot boat 2,200 miles solo from Annapolis, Maryland to the Dominican Republic over the course of two years, starting in 2009. While I was sailing alone in the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti in 2012, my boat was knocked down and disabled by a rogue wave. I had to abandon the boat after I was rescued by a U. S. Coast Guard cutter that took me to Guantanamo Bay. I have no idea what happened to my boat.
9. To get my undergraduate degree in Secondary English Education at the University of Maryland in College Park in 1981, I had to complete a semester of student teaching at a local high school. My supervising teacher passed me on the one condition that I promised never to teach English to anyone. I went to law school the following fall.
10. U. S. Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist was one of three mock judges in the final championship round of oral arguments in the moot court competition at my law school. When Justice Rehnquist challenged one of my arguments, I panicked and insulted his reasoning in one of the actual cases he had written for the Supreme Court. I tried to move on, but he stopped me and said that he “resented” my comment. Everyone laughed, including Rehnquist, but I was dying. We won the competition in a split decision, but I never knew which way Rehnquist voted.

* Ten years after college, three very different women reunite for a summer on Martha’s Vineyard. As they come to grips with various challenges in their lives, an encounter with a reclusive fisherman threatens to change everything they believe about their world—and each other.
~ Excerpt ~
Chapter 20
* It was a question that would never have occurred to her mother or to any of her mother’s friends. Of course she would marry Tripp Wallace, they would say—or wouldn’t say, rather, because the subject would never come up. But if they were asked, they would be pained to explain what was self-evident. He met all the necessary criteria. He was from a well-respected family. He had gone to the right schools, as had his father and grandfather and great-grandfather before him. He had the right friends who had gone to the same schools and traveled in the same small circles. He was accomplished at the right sports—sailing in summer and skiing in winter—and he knew how to say and do the right things at the right moment in a way that bore testament, along with his good looks, to an obvious breeding. He was tall and well-formed and not overly bright or bookish or moody or sensitive. He would love Dory with fraternal affection and a benign indifference that would immunize him from the terrible angst that afflicts the lovelorn. There would be affairs, perhaps, but he could be relied upon to keep them discreet and meaningless, and there would be no brooding or melancholy or naval gazing in the wake of their discovery. New love would falter and stumble as it invariably does, but the business of marriage would march on. There would be no mid-life forays into the wild unknown, because he was not a curious man. His life had followed a well-worn path thus far, and he would stick to that path without the danger of navigational error that comes from needless reflection. He would lead a good life, not a well-examined life, and thereby make it possible for Dory to do the same. He and Dory would produce tall, lithe, gorgeous, tow-headed children and grandchildren who, on their way to fulfilling their central role as heirs to the family’s fortune and curators of its legacy, would by their laughter and playfulness banish the awful silence that would otherwise creep into their marriage, like a pestilence.

The job isn't what is appears, but the irony of how things turn out causes Camille to laugh until she has tears rolling down her face. (42 pages).
~~ "I’m not going to spend much time repeating myself," Camille said, "I want you to remove whatever you want to keep from this house. You can store your stuff in a rental truck if you need to until you find a new home, but you will be gone from here by midnight and never return." ~~
~~ "You can’t do that!" ~~
~~ "If you are not gone by midnight, I will set fire to the house." ~~

~ Blurb for Krystal’s Wedding ~
* Krystal leaves her seriously flawed family in Midland, heading for New York City, where she takes a few slippery steps. Krystal's mother encourages her to find a husband in order to escape her loud roommate in Hell's Kitchen and her boring job. However, Krystal actually gets her footing in New York and in life when she is offered a new, fulfilling direction. (21 pages).
~~ Krystal felt safe with Hudson there, but it must be as clear to him and his family as it was to her that theirs was a match of china and paper plates. As Krystal faked a sip of the champagne with a name she couldn’t read because it was printed in twirly letters in French, she wondered how hard his mother would try to prevent Hudson from getting too serious... ~~

~ Blurb for Frying Your Burger ~
* Nicky and three irreverent friends spend mornings at a coffee shop tossing repartee on love, sex, and religion. Then, Nicky gets caught up with a Hollywood player, becoming a pawn in the battle of egos between two movie directors trying to ruin each others careers. (108 pages).
~~ I went into the room marked Cashier and got into a long line. And there he was. Grinning that grin. He should have had a license for it. It was that bright. I stood next to him in my white t-shirt and white pants looking like someone straight out of the "hospital orderly fashion catalogue." It was all I had clean that day. ~~

~ Excerpt from Camille's Net Worth ~
* She was late to work at Fastbinder’s Mortgage Company, and when she arrived, the atmosphere in the office felt charged. Something was up. The top managers were in an unscheduled conference call and no one knew why. No one was working, so Camille called her mother to thank her for the flowers that were already sitting on her desk.
* “What do you and Walker have planned for tonight?” Elaine Morgan asked her daughter.
* Camille explained about the dinner.
* “What is he getting you as a gift?”
* “I don’t know, Mom. I’ve looked everywhere.”
* “Well, have a wonderful time, honey,” her mom said.
* It was ten o’clock when Camille got off the phone. The accounting department surprised her with a birthday cake, sang to her, and gave her the card they had all signed. Five minutes later, the managers were out of their meeting and everyone got canned by one loud announcement from the District Manager.
* “We’re sorry to have to tell you that you are all let go.” That is all that Camille would ever clearly remember.
* The mortgage company was belly-up. Those few employees who were retained were being transferred to the Las Vegas branch. Everyone was in shock and had no time to express outrage or disappointment because they were told to pack up all of their personal belongings and exit the building immediately. Camille took the elevator down the four floors, amid grumblings from secretaries and mortgage brokers. What about our benefits? I didn’t take all my vacation this year. Someone ought to blow up the building. I stole a printer.
