Top 10 Facts about Whisk Me Up
1. The main theme that drove this book is Mary Beth’s battle with anorexia. This implied tons of research into the condition, and I hope I managed to portray the struggle of someone with anorexia and show them that there is hope out there.
2. I had to learn what it implies to be a chef – so for many months, I lived and breathed through cookbooks, cooking shows, and reading about the life of a chef (hello, Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential!) as well as learning the techniques a chef would use (immense thanks to Michael Ruhlman for his books Ratio and Ruhlman’s Twenty which pretty much became my – and Niall’s – cooking bible).
3. Got immersed in the world of modelling…especially going behind-the-scenes of some iconic stuff like the Victoria’s Secret annual lingerie show. Found out that being a model is much harder and tougher than it appears.
4. Howard Castle in Yorkshire is the location I just knew I had to use as Havisham Hall when I first encountered it in the movie Garfield: A tale of two kitties. The grandeur of this restored castle never fails to astound me. The real Howard Castle is not located in the northern Yorkshire dales, though – that was my creative license with the setting.
5. Of course, this would veer into a series with me – I just cannot seem to be able to write single-title books and leave well enough alone. So it started as the stories of 3 sisters…and as I wrote, other characters grafted themselves into this world and begged to have their stories told, too.
6. The idea to make Havisham Park and its villages the best kept secret regarding the discrepancy in the man to woman ratio came as something totally out there that I thought of…and then I thought, why not? Thus, the Havisham Park hunks were born *grin*
7. Learning the Yorkshire lingo and dialect was an education in itself! For months, I immersed myself in listening to only Yorkshire folks and also watching British soapie Emmerdale which takes place in Yorkshire. Replicating the accent wasn’t easy, and it also proved like an entirely other language. I hope I have done them justice though in the way I have put across their accent and manner of speech in the book.
8. I wanted to go back to my storytelling roots for this series, so the heat level is mainly sensual and not overly hot and descriptive as my edgier Corpus Brides espionage series. I wanted Havisham Park to be about soap opera-style romance that tugs at the heartstrings, so the focus is more on relationships in there.
9. Whisk Me Up was my first ever attempt at NaNoWriMo back in 2013. For the first time in my life, I committed myself to write 50,000 words in a month…but I ended up going above and beyond and penning close to 77,000 words within 25 days of said month. This proved a turning point for me, because I had suddenly found the manner of writing that best suited me.
10. At least 9 other books are planned in this series thus far, and I hope I will get the chance to write them in the coming years and bring them to you, fellow readers.
A look into the story

* After fainting backstage at a fashion week, supermodel Mary Beth Beresford is forced to go into hiding in the sleepy North Yorkshire village of Stonydale in Havisham Park when her sisters kidnap her and bring her there to their late father’s family stronghold so she’ll face the truth - she is anorexic.
* Never one to be bossed around, Mary Beth attempts to break out the very next morning...only to land onto the path of the gorgeous, Viking-like pub owner and chef, Niall Barry.
* Suddenly, sticking around in this one-horse town doesn’t look like Purgatory anymore.
* But Niall is a very private person who shies away from celebrity, and Mary Beth is one of the biggest celebs on the planet. Not to mention that she is an aristocrat - daughter of the late earl and member of the peerage - while he is simply a working-class chef.
* Is any relationship between them doomed to collapse like a failed soufflé?
* Something about this lass didn’t add up.
* She jerked in his arms, and clamped her lips shut before pressing a hand to her mouth. A garbled sound came from her throat and her skin paled, beads of sweat erupting at her temples.
* He grabbed her shoulders; to steady her or to keep her in place, he knew not.
* “Are you sick? Is it your blood sugar, if you’re diabetic?”
* She struck him as much too young for diabetes, but stranger things happened in the world.
* “Fine,” she bit out behind her hand and shook her head, sending her ponytail flying.
* Early twenties, he’d say. Still a girl. Off-limits for him, being on the wrong side of thirty. He released her.
* “You’re not fine.” Could he have growled more if he’d wanted?
* She bristled and shrugged away from his touch. “And you’re not my keeper.”
* This scrap of a lass wanted to take him on?
* Niall drew to his six-five height and towered over her. You could put two like her side-to-side and only then would she match him somewhat in width.
* But she poked that pointed chin out and stared him down, even if she appeared on the brink of collapse.
* “The saying is, ‘you’re not my mother’,” he threw out in a bid to unsettle her.
* She snorted. “Like she ever cared.”
* Late teen/young adult rebellion? Hence the druggie route?
* “Well, you’re in my place, and under my roof, you do as I say.”
* “But of course, if you say so, Thor.”
* Bit of a smart mouth, ain’t she? With his build, blond hair, and Viking ancestry, he’d been compared to the Norse god many a time.
* Then her eyes rolled back, and she slumped.
* Hell fire! “Calling the doctor.”
* He picked her up again and brought her to the back, into the office, where he lay her down on the worn settee.
* “No!”
* “Listen, lass. You almost passed out three times in the past quarter hour—”
* “I told you I’m not sick. I came out for a run but got lost and been out longer than I planned.”
* “And you set out on an empty stomach, I bet.” Where that certitude came from, he knew not.
* “I had a protein shake, okay?” She had the gall to glare at him.
* He leaned down and peered into her face. “Don’ cut it with me. You’d need to run mile afore that worked off. Hardly in sweat, are you?”
* Fire flashed in her gaze, and she pursed her lips as if to refrain from cursing him, or worse, spitting into his face.
* “Stay put,” he ordered as he dashed out of the room and into the kitchen across the corridor. From the oven, he pulled a dish of leftover shepherd’s pie he’d heated up for Anna. Lord knew the woman never remembered to eat. Anorexic at her age; he snorted.
* Eeh bah gum. The lass back there? Way too thin. She probably hardly ate a thing.
* “Where are you off to?” he barked from the kitchen doorway.
* She froze in the corridor. “On my way out.”
* “Not afore you eaten summa’.”
* “Gosh dang! Ya never let up, duntya?”
* Author, editor, smitten wife, in-over-her-head mum to a tween boy, best-buddy stepmum to a teenage lad, bookaholic, lover of all things fluffy & pink, chronic shoeholic, incompetent housewife desperate to channel Nigella Lawson (and who’ll prolly always fail at making domestic goddess status)...
* Zee hails from the multicultural, rainbow-nation island of Mauritius, in the southern Indian Ocean, where she grew up on the figurative fence—one side had her ancestors’ Indian and Muslim culture; the other had modernity and the global village. When one day she realised she could dip her toes into both sides without losing her integrity, she found her identity.
* This quest for ‘finding your place’ is what she attempts to bring in all her stories, across all the genres she writes. Her heroines represent today’s women trying to reconcile love, life, & relationships in a melting pot of cultures, while her heroes are Alpha men who often get put back into their rightful place by the headstrong women she writes. Love is always a winner in her stories, though; that’s a given.

Let Mercy Come by +Zee Monodee

Romantic Suspense
Add to Goodreads
Ten Reasons Why Being An Author of Romantic Suspense Is Bad For You by Zee Monodee
1. Your life will always seem boring and mundane compared to the scenarios you come up with.
2. Suddenly, people start looking at you in a weird manner when they read your work, and find out how much the “sweet” person they know you to be... can think like a psycho and/or sociopath...
3. You find men who don’t walk the edge of danger boring.
4. You get to research and know a lot about guns and other weapons (probably too much...)
5. It’s not hard for you to imagine potential scenarios for getting rid of your boss/mother-in-law/slimy ex/your man’s psycho ex and figuring out exactly how to get away with it...
6. You retreat into your bubble, because frankly, wherever you’re living will seem like the dumps when your stories are taking you to Paris, London, Prague, Cape Town, Lake Como, and other such glamorous, exotic locations.
7. You suddenly know a lot about biological weapons and can hold your own in a debate about the merits of this anti-terrorism strategy versus the other (putting you squarely into Nerd category!)
8. Coffee starts to replace blood in your body, because, face it, you need the adrenalin rush!
9. Vanilla sex gets just way too boring! Your characters need spice and the rush... and you take the irreversible step into hot and racy sex scene territory.
10. You start wishing you were your characters, never mind they’re totally screwed up...
A look into the story
Let mercy come
...and wash away our sins...

A woman on the run
Valeriya Morozova has managed to carve out a do-over for herself away from the clutches of the Corpus agency. The one formerly known as Anastasiya still lives on the edge, paranoid anyone will bust her secret and turn her in. Agency leaders believe her to be at the heart of the failed mutinous plot to overtake command, and the price of that betrayal—never mind that she is innocent—will be her life, paid in blood.
A man who’s always followed orders
In his decades inside the Corpus agency, case officer and former super-spy Graeme Whitman—aka Scott—has always paid heed to rules and obeyed all his orders. When he is chosen to bring the traitor Anastasiya back into the fold, Scott knows it will be just one more job he will successfully complete. After all, doing the right thing is atonement for your past mistakes, right?
Secrets running deep
Scott has secrets; who doesn’t? But he isn’t prepared for the full cupboard of skeletons Anastasiya carries with her...starting with the reason why she ran away from the agency. The more he digs, the less he is certain of, until he comes to ask himself why everyone has falsely painted her as a hard-hearted sociopath.

But is Anastasiya a victim, or a skilful manipulator? When her past collides with her present, the future as both she and Scott conceived it shatters. They’ve answered the call of duty all their lives—will they have to make the ultimate sacrifice in the name of love?
* She closed the distance between them to go stand right in front of him. She had her out; would he listen to her, though?
* “Then let us go, Scott. Antonia and I can disappear. You don’t need to put your life on hold because of us. Seth, your son, he needs you.”
* “I can’t do that,” he murmured.
* “Why not? If this is atonement for you, then I’m asking you to let us go. Do this and you’ll be free.”
* “I don’t want to be free.”
* She blinked. “What?”
* “Not when you are, too.”
* He’d completely lost her there. She glanced up into his face, and the breath whooshed out of her at what she saw on his face. Pain, but of a different kind. The type that accompanied unrequited longing for another person.
* She shook her head. I must be getting delusional. Why would Scott—
* All thoughts screeched to a halt when he brought a big hand up and gingerly cradled one side of her jaw in that warm palm.
* “Forgive me for saying this, Ana, but I’ve wanted a future with you ever since the first day I saw you.”
* A small puff of air escaped her.
* He smiled as his eyes took a faraway glint. “You looked so prim and proper in that white lab blouse. Still so young, but your eyes... They said you had lived a long life already, that you had a lot concealed behind the façade you showed the world. Then you looked up and asked me—”
* “...did you have a choice to be here?” She remembered that instant probably more vividly than he did.
* He gave a lazy blink, as of coming back into the moment to stare at her in the now. “I had one back then, and I have one now. That day, I chose duty. Today, I choose you, Ana.”
* “Scott—”
* “Graeme. My name is Graeme.” He rubbed the pad of his thumb along her cheekbone. “Say it. I want to hear you say it.”
* She parted her lips. He’d trusted her with his real identity, and if she believed all he’d said until now...
* “Graeme,” she said softly.
* He closed his eyes as he took in that sound; at least, that’s what it seemed like to her.
* “Graeme, please...”
* He opened his eyes and peered at her. “What is it?”
* When his touch on her cheek lost some of its pressure, all the life inside of her ebbed away like the tide gathering for a tsunami. It took everything from her. If she lost him now, when he’d showed her how much he wanted—no, needed!—her, she would die.
* She had to show him. That’s when she reckoned her body had gone stiff from the second he’d touched her, petrified in surprise, and he must have gathered her response as being this aloofness in her body language.
* He was wrong. Oh, so wrong!
* First step; she’d have to take it.
* So Valeriya listened to her heart, and she brought a hand up to clasp his where it had started to recede from her jaw. She pressed her cheek into his palm, soaking in his warmth.
* “Graeme, please...” She glanced up into his eyes. “Kiss me.”

A Look At Zee Monodee & 'Before The Morning' @ZeeMonodee @LoveBitesSilk #romanticsuspense

Title: Before The Morning
Author: Zee Monodee
Series: Corpus Brides; Book 2: The Prequel
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Top ten facts about the book
1. Rayne did not exist when this series started – it wasn’t even supposed to be a series, but then it started niggling as to how it all started, and how did the Corpus come to find out? Rayne was thus ‘born’ into the ranks of the clandestine Corpus Agency, and of course, she had to be the most dangerous of them all!

2. This story started on a dare from Goodreads users in the Dangerous Hero Addict Support Group – all those taking part needed to write a story about a dangerous hero (that was a given!) and we had a few tropes to choose from. “Friends to lovers” sounded really interesting, so this became the main trope for this book.

3. Ash Gilfoy is the embodiment of ‘honour’. He had to be the character with the most beautiful yet tortured soul; still, he only wanted to do the right thing, especially with Rayne whom he believes is an innocent entrapped in the vortex of his darkness. It was a labour of love giving him his absolution along with Rayne’s.

4. Where Walking The Edge focused more on the ‘Nikita’ vibe, Before The Morning took on more of a ‘Burn Notice’ comedy aspect of espionage…when the families were brought in! Rayne has been trained to kill without blinking and without making any mess; she goes toe to toe with the most sociopathic of criminals out there…but tell her she has to come back into her family fold, for a wedding, no less, and she breaks into cold sweat and yearns to run away!

5. The book takes place even more around Europe, with a stint in Las Vegas, too, at one point. Prague in the Czech Republic features heavily in there (fyi, the image on the cover is of Prague). Then there is London, especially the Ritz and Soho, and Hastings in East Sussex on Sea, a location not usually seen in stories. There’s a hop to France, as well, to the French Provence at Arles and the Alyscamps Roman necropolis located there. Research about underground tunnels under the Thames took me to Brunel Tunnel and its grand entrance hall, where a pivotal scene is set.

6. The character of Anastasiya—heroine of the third and last Corpus Brides book—is introduced in this story. She is Rayne’s best friend inside the agency, a woman cloaked in secrets and made for the clandestine life…until she cuts and run. Most believe her to be behind the mutinous conspiracy to take power inside the ranks.

7. Corpus agent Scott makes another hefty guest appearance in this tale—an integral part of the ‘good guys’ camp, he saves Rayne’s arse on more than one occasion.

8. The whole story is even more a plethora of guns and danger. Makarovs, Walthers, Glocks, Micro Eagles—you name it and it’s probably in there. Proved to be fun to research (as well as giving whoever’s watching the kind of information to put this computer on the ‘to-watch list’, LOL)

9. Family and relationships are an integral part of the plot, as much as the danger and espionage form part of the story. Rayne has existed in her bubble as assassin Kali for half of her life—it is now time for her to reconcile with the woman, daughter, sister, and wife, inside of her…and no amount of training has prepared her for this!

10. Despite being the prequel to the whole series, the story stands alone and there is a definite conclusion to the romance of Rayne and Ash, all while spring-boarding the events in both Books 1 and 3 (Walking The Edge and Let Mercy Come, respectively).
A look into the story
In this stand-alone prequel to the explosive Corpus Brides romantic suspense/espionage series, found out how everything started when one of the agency’s deadliest became the target of a rogue faction.

Before the morning
...is the time of greater darkness...

A trained killer with borderline sociopathic tendencies
*Rayne Cheltham traced out her life's path when she was twelve: she would marry her best friend and bear his children, and in the process, stifle the restless edge in her. When he vows never to marry, she gives in to the darkness and becomes a clandestine agent—until the day he walks into her world again, and her carefully fabricated façade crumbles.

A former cop burned by life and his personal demons
When Ash Gilfoy meets a woman who reminds him of his childhood best friend, he starts upon a path that leads him down into the abyss once again. The day Rayne waltzes back into his life, he knows she is his second chance, and the one who will save him.

Each thinks the other is their redemption...until they discover how deep darkness goes inside both of them
The secrets between them make them sit on a keg of gunpowder with a lit fuse in their hands. Rayne’s whole life is built on a lie, and the truth is threatening to explode in their faces. But that is not the only menace they have to face. Someone is out to get Rayne, and she must disclose her secret past before it is too late.
Can Rayne and Ash survive all that’s thrown in their path? Can they hang on to the last thread of their relationship, and can they emerge, still together and still alive, in the morning after the deepest darkness?
* Ash blinked. He had to be dreaming. Except that the metal band on his finger felt all too real—heavy, smooth, warm, and tight. He glanced at the ring, then at Rayne. It took two people to get married, and she must be the other half of the equation. He didn’t need to see the glinting, burnished piece of gold on her ring finger to put two and two together.
* Except, here, two and two equalled a whole muck up of twisted shit. They were married? Since when? How? And worse, had they consummated the union?
* He snorted softly. Who was he kidding? Of course they’d consummated their wedding. The only thing between him and Rayne lately amounted to sex, the strings of their friendship just pale, sketchy ghosts grappling for hold where none existed to be grappled.
* As he raked his gaze over her, he caught sight of the deep red hickeys on her neck. The confirmation he sought. Damn. He clearly remembered lowering his head to kiss the unmarred column of her neck earlier during the evening when they’d stopped in front of the Bellagio to watch the play of the water fountains. These love bites had happened sometime between leaving the Vegas strip and him waking up with a headache, and he doubted they’d done the deed in public. They must’ve slept together once back at the house.
* The pounding in his head intensified to a persistent throbbing against every square inch of his skull. Seeing this ring on his hand had relegated the pain to oblivion—he’d heard shock could do that to a person.
* But, married? “What the hell is this, Rayne?”
* His voice sounded flat, and cold. She blinked; her eyes then grew wide, and she parted her lips. He thought he saw the lower lip quiver. She brought her arms up, wrapped them around her in a protective hug.
* “I...I knew you’d think we made a mistake.”
* The shimmer of tears glimmered in her big, blue-grey eyes. Damn it, she wouldn’t cry, would she? Because of him? He’d just been curt with her, but he’d woken up to find out he’d gotten married. Try as he might, he couldn’t remember getting hitched, or even proposing, or agreeing, to marry her. Bloody hell—most men would’ve gone bat shit ballistic for less.
* She gave a small hiccup and brought her hand up to rub her open palm against her nose. Bad signs—she would soon unleash the waterworks. Damn.
* “Rayne...” He pulled himself up on the mattress, into a sitting position. Reaching out, he placed his hands on her shoulders and squeezed gently. “Calm down. Just give me a minute here, okay?”
* She nodded, let her arms drop to her sides and blinked hard a few times, as if to keep her tears in check.
* “Tell me something,” he said as he released her. “Are we really married?”
* She bit her lip, and nodded.

Walking the edge
The next step might be the last...

A woman without a past
Left amnesiac after an accident, Amelia Jamison’s instincts slowly rise from the depths of oblivion to question her life as the wife of a cold, manipulating and distant man. Wisps of a dream show her another man she may have known intimately, but is he a memory, or a figment of her imagination?

A man with too much information
After many aliases, today Gerard Besson is simply a police commissaire in Marseille. When a mysterious woman starts to follow him, he is suspicious. But things aren’t what they seem, and as he reluctantly gets closer to her, dredges of his painful, buried past spring to light and make him question her identity.

Each seems to have led two different lives
But neither is prepared for what awaits them when they cross the fine line between knowing your true self and that of your alter ego.
Danger is the name of the game, and as it catches up with them in the French Provence, both know they better be ready for the inevitable fall.
* As he turned to scan the other side of the road, something—or someone—lunged at him and knocked him into the solid garage door. Reflex kicking in, he took a deep breath to fortify himself against the stinging pain in his body. Honing his senses, he lashed out on the side from which his opponent had assaulted him.
* His fist connected with a jaw and he heard a grunt. Male. So not the woman from the bistro. Could she have sent someone after him? He had no time to ponder—a heavy booted foot collided smack into his stomach and sent him to his knees. The gun dropped from his hand. He could barely see the man kick the Sig away. Now’s the time to hit him.
* But he wasn’t fast enough. The thug smashed a hard blow to Gerard’s temple. Black dots danced before his eyes.
* It would take more than this to knock him out, though. He looked up and staggered an exhale—he’d be no match against the gun his assailant yanked from inside his jacket. A weapon with a silencer screwed on. Definitely a man out for a kill.
* Time stood still while he tried to breathe and remain conscious.
* And then something happened so quickly he had trouble grasping it. The guy howled and went down, his free hand clutching his neck as Gerard caught sight of a cherry-red flash.
* The thug lifted and aimed his gun. Another red burst haloed the first.
* Two shots rang, and the man slumped.
* Gerard moved his gaze to where the flashes had appeared. His Sig lay in the hands of the one who’d saved him.
* Legs braced, back straight, she held the gun in both hands, the left cupping the right. Wisps of smoke gently drifted from the barrel.
* He blinked when he focused on her face.
* It can’t be. The same woman who’d met him at the bistro. Yet, at the same time, not her. Her features looked different, harder, and, he realized with dread, completely focused yet expressionless.
* Something told him to take another look. She hadn’t dropped the gun, and for an insane moment, he wondered if she’d aim it his way and shoot. There had been no hesitation in her two shots, and, as his eyes took in the way she held the Sig—one hand curled around the grip and the other anchoring it—realization clattered in his brain.
* She held it like a professional, and merde if she hadn’t shot like a professional, too.
* Finally, she lowered the weapon and stepped up to him.
* From his previous deduction, he hadn’t expected her to be trembling or bumbling her way about, but still, the efficiency with which she sidestepped the body and crouched at Gerard’s side sent warning bells off in his head.
* “Who the hell are you?” he asked, aware the thought had made it into words.

Saucy Saturday ~ A Look At Zee Monodee & 'The Other Side' ( @ZeeMonodee @decadentpub #romcom #Ubuntu )

Today we have author Zee Monodee visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Stories about love, life, relationships... in a melting-pot of culture
* Zee is an author who grew up on a fence – on one side there was modernity and the global world, on the other there was culture and traditions. Putting up with the culture for half of her life, one day she decided she'd stand tall on her wall and dip toes every now and then into both sides of her non-conventional upbringing.
* From this resolution spanned a world of adaptation and learning to live on said wall. The realization also came that many other young women of the world were on their own fence.
* This particular position became her favorite when she decided to pursue her lifelong dream of writing – her heroines all sit 'on a fence', whether cultural or societal, in today's world or in times past, and face dilemmas about life and love.
* Hailing from the multicultural island of Mauritius, Zee is a degree holder in Communications Science. She is a head-over-heels wife, in-over-her-head mum to a tween son, best-buddy-stepmum to a teenage lad, an incompetent domestic goddess, eternal dreamer, and an absolute, shameless bookholic. When she isn’t penning more stories and/or managing the Ubuntu line at Decadent Publishing, you can bet you’ll find her with her nose in her tablet, ‘drinking in’ a good book.

What are you going to tell us about today?
* The Other Side is book 1 in the Island Girls trilogy. The Island Girls trilogy follows the 3 Hemant sisters – Lara, Neha, Diya – over the span of the 2000-2010 decade, chronicling the changing face of the Mauritian society over that crucial period.
* The Other Side is Zee’s first-ever penned novel, written in the year 2005, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and thus decided to live her dream of writing a book. She drafted this book mostly during sleepless nights between chemotherapy sessions, the outpouring of this tale becoming her therapy to cope with her treatments.
* Back in the year 2000 (when this story takes place), divorce was an almost-alien, shunned & vilified concept. People were still supposed to marry ‘for life’ and a wife left her husband’s home only in her coffin. Those who dared brave this silent edict did it at the risk of becoming marginalized and cast away. Like Lara, the author, Zee, divorced her British husband and returned to the island to face such drama. Much of the divorce angle in the book comes from her own experience.
* Zee’s initial plan was to write this one book and then be finished. Over the course of the story, Lara’s two sisters – Diya and Neha – started whispering their own tales...and the trilogy was born.
* Book 2, Light My World, is Diya’s hilarious quest to find Prince Charming in the sea of frogs that is Mauritius (well, what it is according to her perception!). Follow her on this desperate mission in September 2013.
* Book 3, Winds of Change, follows Neha as she must come to terms with widowhood and the fact that her marriage has always been a sham. In waltzes a man with the ability to make the perfect, ‘saintly’ widow she is burn with passion like she never suspected existed. Will the saint turn into a sinner, or find her rightful place simply as a woman? Find out in November 2013.

A look into the story
~ Blurb ~
* Divorce paints a scarlet letter on her back when she returns to the culture-driven society of Mauritius. This same spotlight shines as a beacon of hope for the man who never stopped loving her. Can the second time around be the right one for these former teenage sweethearts?
* Indian-origin Lara Reddy left London after her husband dumps her for a more accommodating uterus—at least, that’s what his desertion feels like. Bumping into him and his pregnant new missus doesn’t help matters any, and she thus jumps on a prestigious job offer. The kicker? The job is in Mauritius, the homeland of her parents, and a society she ran away from over a decade earlier.
* But once there, Lara has no escape. Not from the gossip, the contempt, the harassing matchmaking...and certainly not from the man she hoped never to meet again. The boy she’d loved and lost—white Mauritian native, Eric Marivaux.
* Back when they were teens, Eric left her, and Lara vowed she’d never let herself be hurt again. Today, they are both adults, and facing the same crossroads they’d stood at so many years earlier.
* Lara now stands on the other side of Mauritian society. Will this be the impetus she needs to take a chance on Eric and love again?
~ Excerpt ~
* Eric Marivaux stood in the office of his private practice, staring out of the window at nothing in particular. The Grand Baie summer sun beat down on the pane and licked at his skin, burning him with the rays that passed through the glass, but he paid the physical sensations no heed. All his focus lay on his memories, especially of the encounter he’d had with Lara earlier.
* Lara, whom he’d loved and lost so many years ago.
* How did meeting her again make him feel? He didn’t have a clue, and this uncertainty rattled him beyond the pale. A part of him didn’t dare browse his feelings for the full effect this meeting with her had had on him. But he couldn’t hide, and the sooner he faced the truth, the easier it should be for him to keep on moving forward. At least, he hoped.
* He didn’t want her back. Not in his proximity, not in the same place, not on the same soil. The more distance between them, the better. He’d had to work so hard toward finally accepting such a reality, so why had fate chosen that precise moment to put her back onto his path?
* He ran a hand in his hair, letting his fingers work at untangling the knots. He should cut the long locks, but damn if he found the time.
* Why now? He’d recently reconciled to the idea none of his relationships would work out, because she was the only woman he’d ever love. Peace with that notion had come hard. If he hoped to settle down someday, he’d do so for convenience and companionship, but never for love. It took one face-to-face meeting with her to send his certitude spinning like a crazy top.
* No, she shouldn’t be here. He had no desire to see her and be reminded of what he’d let go. He’d wanted to run when upon recognizing her earlier. Run as fast as his legs could carry him. Run away from the hurt and the anger that inevitably crept into his whole being and consumed him completely whenever he even thought of her.
* Yet, he hadn’t been able to resist. One glance at her, and he’d been a goner. Again. So he’d given in, and revelled in those short but sweet moments they’d shared. She’d felt so good in his arms—
* He sighed and ran his hand over his face again in a gesture fraught with weariness and frustration. Lara. He’d stumbled aback when he recognized her. She’d changed in the past twelve years, since the last time he’d seen her.
* She was a woman and not a skinny seventeen-year-old anymore. The long hair had also tricked him. The straight black locks framed the sides of her face, whereas in the past, she used to draw it into a high ponytail that bounced with her every step. He loved to tug on her long hair, which would annoy her so much, and when she frowned and narrowed her gaze at him, he would swoop in and steal a kiss. After which she would smile. Reluctantly, but she’d smile nevertheless.
* Why was she back? He had returned to Mauritius because she wouldn’t be there. Her life was in London. What was she doing here? He prayed she was on vacation.
* He closed his eyes and let his head touch the surface of the window. The glass felt hot against his skin. As drained as he felt, he couldn’t bother with a possible burn to his sun-sensitive skin. Meeting her again had shaken him up. More so, because he couldn’t bear to see her and know she belonged to another man now. To that darkly handsome husband of hers, who, he’d been loath to admit, resembled Tom Cruise, Lara’s teenage crush. The guy also had brains, since he was some hotshot actuary or something, working in investment. And Lara had seemed happy with him. He remembered the joyous expression on her face when he’d seen them once on Piccadilly Circus in London.
* That day, he’d known for good she was lost to him, stupid fool he was. He’d been an idiot to leave so abruptly for France all those years ago, his relationship with her hanging as unfinished business.
* But it had all been a long time ago. A different lifetime, even. He forced his eyes open, and rubbed the nape of his neck as he peeled himself from the window and stepped closer to his desk. No use pondering the past, especially one that had not gone as planned.
* Would they have worked out, the two of them? He’d never know. Better this way.
