Welcome special guest: author Alexandra O’Hurley @alexohurley @evernightpub

Today we have Alexandra O’Hurley visiting! Alex loves to write paranormal erotic romance, but has also dabbled in historical and futuristic romances as well.  A single mom to a 16 year old kiddo, she works full-time, goes to school part-time, and writes whenever she can find the time.

* So, Alex, what inspired you to become a writer?
A wall-banger!  Seriously, I read a book that was sooooooo bad that I told myself I could even do better than that.  I had written all my life, mostly poetry and short stories, but figured I’d put up or shut up.  Thankfully, I put up.
* When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
I wrote my first novel soon after the wall-banger incident, about five years ago.  It was about 50,000 words and after being rejected twice, was accepted and published in early 2010.  Abduction has done fairly well, and subsequently spawned a second in the series.  I have an idea for a third, but we shall see if that ever comes to fruition.
* How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
I had my second novel about 25% done when I sold the first.
* What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
I am a little all over the place.  I’ve written Sci-Fi, Futuristic, Paranormal, Shifter, and Historical.  Technically, the Sci-Fi/Futuristic/Shifter can all be lumped in with Paranormal, depending on who you are talking to.  I love the Paranormal twists a story can have, and it allows me to put interesting spins on my manuscripts.
* What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Hmmmm.  Interesting question.  I’d have to say that nothing has ever been bad, as advice is subjective.  What works for one author may not for another.  Shared experiences, negative or positive, can help formulate your decision making process, so even though a particular piece of advice may not fit me personally, it is filed away.
* How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
First acceptance letter, I couldn’t vocalize at all.  Except for screams.  My family said I looked like Tigger bouncing through the house.  As for now, a dinner out to celebrate a new contract is standard operating procedure around here.  Rejections?  I’m fortunate to say I have had very few of those thus far.  ((Knocking on wood with every available appendage.))
* In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
My heroes are twins and I envisioned them looking a tad bit like Jessie Pavelka (my crush…sigh).  My heroine, well, she would be tougher.  I would have to go with a Titanic Era Kate Winslet.  My villain would be an old boss of mine. :)
* The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
Night of the Dragon is the first book in the Berserker Mate’s Series.  There are a total of three novellas planned, and they are hence unnamed, but the next story will be Joran and Jakob’s.  Jakob does star in a short called Going Berserk in the Midnight Seduction Anthology out in October 2011 from Evernight Publishing, but a reader will not have to read the short to follow along with the series.
I also have two more new releases coming in September.  All’s Fair in Love and Lust will come out from Siren Publishing on September 28th, a paranormal ménage, and Being Improper, my first historical novella, will come out sometime during the month from Evernight Publishing.

*** Now for some fun info… ***
* What’s your favorite color?
Baltimore Raven’s Purple
* Are you a cat, dog or both kind of person?
DOG.  I am not competing with an animal that has more attitude than I do, so cats aren’t my thing.  But then again, I own a female Chihuahua, who personally is as close to a cat as a dog can ever be.  My loveable Daschund/Golden mix is picked on way too much, poor guy.
* Are you a morning person or night owl?
Night Owl, without a doubt.

*** About the book/series… ***

I stumbled across an Old Norse myth one night and fell in love with the legend of the Berserkers.  I knew I had to write a story starring them, and like any strong alpha, they took over and drove the story.  Berserkers were believed to be men who could shift into any form, but preferred the wolf or bear, and shifted before battle.  They were found in literature as far back as an old 9th century Norse poem, and both respected and feared for their power and virility.  Scholars today believe they were only men cloaked themselves in animal pelts who took some form of hallucinatory drug before battle, which gave them their wild, frenzied, violent natures.  Their name is the history and the meaning behind the word “berserk”.  I like to believe today’s scholars are wrong, and Berserkers were real.  It could happen, right?

Night of the Dragon ~ A Berserker Mate's Story, 1
Ryden and Rayne are Berserkers, immortal warriors wrought of Odin’s lightning. They are cursed to walk the Earth for one thousand years without finding love. And then they smell her...

Karli is a manager for an amusement park, and during her daily tour, she runs across the most incredible men she has ever laid eyes on. The erotic visions swirling in her head push her to the edge, and she cannot ignore the two virile men.
But can anything develop between the Berserkers and their mate with a hunter sworn to keep them apart on their trail?

Be Warned: menage a trois romance, menage sex, anal sex, bondage.

~ Excerpt ~

If Karli gave in to their kind of play, she was afraid she would walk away broken.
But no matter what she told her head, her body could not reject the heated combination of the two. Both virile, desirable men who seemed to stalk her equally, and innately she knew if she succumbed to one, she would also the other. What was crazier than the fact she knew it, was the fact her oversexed mind was running images of being sandwiched between both of their naked bodies. Of having them both possess her at once.
Karli was an independent, driven woman, who worked so much she rarely had time to date, let alone swoon over some random men she crossed in the park. She hadn’t had a date in, well, forever. Her career was her main concern. Once she got that in place, everything else could happen for her, marriage, babies, the little white house, with its matching little white picket fence. She was as boring and white bread as they came. And she wasn’t the type to go around fantasizing about screwing two men at the same time.
Hell, this was past fantasizing. It seemed it could become her reality if she wanted it and was willing to succumb to them and the images running through her head.
Regardless, the two fired something inside her, something she had never felt before. Her heart beat a staccato within her body, and she felt pulsing in places she wished she didn’t. Especially when she needed to focus on work and the safety of those inside the park. All around her the sounds of Scream Town began filtering back into her ears and she slowed her breathing down. She needed to get a hold of herself.
Straightening and taking one last long deep breath, she exited the dark passageway, and stood on the fringes of the sea of bodies milling around. This week was always the busiest, as Halloween was a few days away. Karli scanned the crowd, trying to ensure the men were not there. Relieved that she could again focus on her job, she walked the area, but kept looking over her shoulder.
Entering the Zoo compound, Karli passed the wolf enclosure and a glow of silver. Not able to ignore it, she moved towards the fence and realized the glow came from Giza, the female gray wolf that was one of their most popular animal attractions. Moving up to the fence, Karli watched the beautiful animal working with her trainers on the last animal show of the day.
A course of heat ran through her again. I need to see a doctor; I am much too young for hot flashes. Perhaps a psychiatrist too, to figure out my compulsion to fuck random strangers.
“Shame those beautiful beasts are caged here. They should roam free.”
Looking to her left, all she saw was an enormous bicep. Her eyes drifted up, and her gaze was met with a silver one. A shiver of yearning ran down her spine.
Karli moved her mouth a second or two before her voice caught up with her. “All…all of the animals here…are rescues. They were either hurt, or taken from people keeping them as pets. We give them…all the care…they need to heal...and then a safe home….if returning them to the wild…is impossible.”
Nice job, Stuttering Sue. I’m sure he thinks you are a moron now.

“Where they are put on parade throughout the day for stupid, fat humans to ogle instead of roaming the forests hunting like their natures demand.”
Stupid, fat…humans? “If we had not intervened, they would have…died.”
“And living in a cage is better than death? I wouldn’t want to live that way, would you? Just look at her eyes.”
Karli didn’t want to admit that she had often stopped here through her park tours and thought that the animals reflected sadness in their eyes. “We give them…the best care we can.”
“The best care would have been releasing them to the wild.”
“Giza was too badly hurt to go back. Plus, it’s too late for that now, regardless.” Unable to stop the words, the ones no one in the park was supposed to utter aloud. “They have been here so long that they would die if we released them.”
“You know this, yet you keep them anyway.”
“I’m not the one in charge of the animals.” Karli backed up a step as he drew nearer. A large hand moved to her face, one finger extended. His touch was feather light, as he stroked it along her cheek.
“No. No, you just work here. Another one of their caged beasts. Perhaps I need to set you free?”
“And how do you suppose you can do that?” A wave of desire spread through her, starting at the barely there touch upon her cheek. The finger moved under her chin, lifting her face to his.
“Like this.” Dropping down, he pressed soft lips to hers in a kiss that was a whisper of what it could be. A name whispered through her mind as his kiss ended…Ryden.
     “Ryden?”
His brows furrowed as he stood back to his full height. “How do you know my name?”
     “I…don’t…know.”
The corner of his lips hinted at a smile as his eyes bored a hole deep within her. The man inhaled, deeply, lowering his head until it was level with her own. She felt his hot breath on her neck, and she arched her back slightly, her traitorous body demanding more of his touch.
     Which never came.
Opening the eyes she hadn’t even realized she had closed, she looked up into his hooded gaze, the one that screamed an arousal that equaled her own. Tapping his finger on her nametag, the tugging blossomed into a full smile. “Well, Karli of Scream Town, I will be seeing you soon. Very soon.”

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Weekend ~ 5 ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday )

#5 of Six Sentences over six weeks from 'Wild West Weekend.'

Kent strolled off toward the staff bunkhouse.
His head wrangler never ceased to amaze him with his odd bits of wisdom. Dakota rubbed a hand over his face, then headed toward his horse’s stall. He would find out what happened to Cassie all those years ago. She’d tell him why she never came back and what kind of trouble she’d found herself in if it took him the rest of the weekend to get it out of her. He also vowed to himself he would do whatever was necessary to keep the one woman he ever wanted to commit to safe, even if he had to lock her up and throw away the key.

Welcome special guest: author Tina Gerow @TinaGerow

Today we have author, Tina Gerow, who also writes as Cassie Ryan, visiting. Tina Gerow has always had a passion for romance and anything paranormal. Her first book, Into a Dangerous Mind, won the award for Romantic Times Best Small Press Contemporary Paranormal for 2006.
Since then, Tina has published several more books, including the popular Maiden series, the Seduction Series for Kensington’s Aphrodisia line as Cassie Ryan, and the Sisters of Darkness series with Berkley, also as Cassie Ryan.

* So, Tina, what inspired you to become a writer?
I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on and I think it was just natural that I started dreaming about one day seeing my own stories that constantly streamed through my brain up on a bookshelf with my name on the spine of the book.  The rest, as they say, is history :)
* When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
I wrote several short stories as a kid and was told by teachers how great they were, but that I needed to tone down the sarcasm and stop writing the “weird stuff” – which are both what I’m known for writing today!  Lol….  Ah, talk about foreshadowing!  I think my mom may still have those old ones in a box somewhere in her garage, but I don’t know where they are.
* How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
Actually I sold the first full length novel I wrote.  I don’t know how many dozens or hundreds of short stories I wrote…lol!
* What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
As Tina Gerow I write paranormal romance and paranormal romantic suspense.  As Cassie Ryan I write smoking hot erotic paranormal romance.  I love writing in either genre and it keeps me fresh to switch back and forth :)  I suppose I was drawn to write what I enjoyed reading the most, so that was just a natural progression for me.
* What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
The best advice was to write every day and to learn everything I can about the genre and the business.  The worst?  Only one in a million people get published, so don’t be too disappointed if you don’t make it.  Screw that!!  My attitude was, “Why can’t I be that one in a million?” And I was published six months after I received that very bad advice! NEVER stop believing in yourself and your dreams – that’s the advice I give everyone! :)
* How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
I usually go to dinner/drinks with my friends…after dancing around the house like a total and complete fool and posting it to alll my social networks :)  yeah – I’m a geek :)
* In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
I wrote Levi with David Tennant in mind and my heroine could definitely be played by Sandra Bullock :)  The Villain could be any number of good looking, yet slightly evil looking/dark actors :)
* The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.

The Demon & The Succubus is book 2 in the Sisters of Darkness Series.  The first book is Seducing the Succubus.  I’m still writing Taming the Succubus.  Berkley didn’t pick up book 3 & 4 in the series even though it received amazing reader feedback and reviews, so I’ll probably end up self-publishing it so I don’t disappoint my fans. :)
*** Now for some fun info… ***
* Would you/have you own(ed) a snake or some other exotic pet?
NO!  I was bitten by a rattler when I was five and my brother chopped off its head and tossed it in a burlap bag.  Then he tossed both me and the twitching bag in the back of his truck and took us to the hospital.  I still have nightmares about that damn twitching bag :(  It took several nurses and doctors to hold me down to give me the anti-venom because I saw them stick the needle in the snake to take it out and no one bothered to tell me what they were doing so I thought they were giving me its poison…lol.  I think I even bit one of them :(  Sorry!  Lol…
* Are you a morning person or night owl?
Oddly enough, I’m both.  For work I prefer to get in uber early so I don’t have to stay and hit rush hour…lol.  The office is quiet early on and I can get more done :)  But once I’m home and hanging out – I can burn the midnight oil and enjoy staying up or going out for a late night swim under the moon.
* What’s your favorite number?
4, and it’s my son’s too.  When I was little, we had a pool table and I would play underneath it and organize the pool balls.  Well, my favorite color was and still is purple and the purple ball had a 4 on it, so it just stuck :)  In fact my son and I will yell across the house “It’s 4:44!” and both whoop and holler – which annoys my husband and makes us both laugh :)

*** About the book and series… ***

The Demon & The Succubus is the 2nd book in my Sisters of Darkness Series written as Cassie Ryan.  The series is about 4 Succubus in Hell’s Version of the Witness relocation program.  It’s got archangels, demons, succubus, incubus and a whole host of other supernatural beasties along with some smoking hot sex scenes and some great suspense and action :)  It’s available on Kindle, iPad as well as print at any brick and mortar book store – except Borders since they are no longer…
I got the idea for the series when I was watching a Discovery Channel Program on the Garden of Eden.  They said that a lot of scholars consider Lilith the first “succubus” and I started thinking how lonely that must be for her to be considered the one who toppled that whole empire when it was really the free will of both Adam and Eve that got us to this point.  I wondered how someone with that kind of a past could survive and even thrive and the story started to come together inside my head :)  I pitched it to my agent and she loved it and the rest is history :)

***Find Tina/Cassie here***
http://www.cassieryan.com; http://www.tinagerow.com; http://www.facebookcom/tinagerow; http://www.twitter.com/tinagerow  I’m very active on Social Media and try to keep my websites updated with the latest and greatest.  I’m very behind on getting out newsletters, but I’m working to correct that.

Thank you for joining us here today! It was a pleasure getting to know you and your work.

Tina/Cassie is holding a contest! For a reader's choice between The Demon & The Succubus or Seducing the Succubus all you have to do is comment and leave an email and you’ll be entered. International readers are allowed to enter as well! Contest will close on Thursday 9/29 at 5:59 pm Pacific time after which a winner will be randomly drawn and notified.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Weekend ~ 4 ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday )

#4 of Six Sentences over six weeks from 'Wild West Weekend.'

Around her neck was a wide pink and white plastic-looking collar. Around her finger twirled a pair of handcuffs. “Ready for me and a sexy fling?”
Ready for her? He was more than ready, but cuffs and collars? Wasn’t that a bit kinky for their first time?

Welcome special guest: author Erin Kellison @EKellison

Today we have author, Erin Kellison, visiting. Erin is the author of the Shadow Series, which includes Shadow Bound and Shadow Fall, as well as Shadowman (Sept 2011), and the e-novella Shadow Touch. She lives in Arizona and hides from the sun by writing books featuring a land filled with shadows.

* So, Erin, what inspired you to become a writer?
Reading. I’ve always loved to read. Books were my refuge and my passage to other worlds. When I finished a book, my imagination wouldn’t shut off and I would think of my own stories. Now I write them.
* When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
I asked for a typewriter for Christmas when I was in the fourth grade, with the intent of writing stories. I remember trying to stare it down. I’m sure I attempted many, but I didn’t finish any. I tried a novel in sixth grade (a dark fantasy adventure), never completed. I think I wrote my first full short story when I was twelve. I believe it was called The Three Wishes. It’s stored in the garage with my stuff from when I was a kid.
* How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
I finished several flash fiction stories, somewhat less short stories, and I co-wrote with my sister a novel-length chick-lit suspense mystery. Shadow Bound, the first in my Shadow series, was my first complete solo effort. I had a lot of half-finished stuff though.
* What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?

I write dark fantasy romance. I love fantasy—have read it all my life. I grew up on Lord of the Rings. I was nerdy enough to try to learn the Elvish language in junior high. And I love romance, especially if it’s dark. My first romance was Jane Eyre (6th grade—my mom said it was too hard for me to read, so I was determined to do so. Took me a year. Changed me forever.) Love gothic romance.
* What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Worst writing advice: This book won’t sell. Best writing advice: Write the story of your heart.
* How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
Hugs in both cases. My hero husband is amazing—we make sure to celebrate all successes, no matter how small. For rejections, I wallow a bit, and then I move on.
* In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
I’m afraid my hero, Shadowman, would have to be CGI. He’s made out of shadow, for one thing. And for another, he’s the Grim Reaper. His appearance changes depending on the attitudes of the person regarding him—if a person conceives Death as Skeletor from He-Man, then Shadowman looks like Skeletor. If Death is a friend, he appears as a friend. If the person thinks of him as a lover, then that is how he comes to her.
I think Bryce Dallas Howard would work well for my heroine, Layla Mathews.
My villain, Rose Anne Petty, could be played by Katie Holmes. She should try a bad guy.
For Fate, who is my big baddy, Cate Blanchett, who is awesome in anything. In fact she can play all the women. She can play Shadowman too.

* The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
My Shadow series thus far consists of Shadow Bound, Shadow Fall, and Shadowman. Though they are all part of a series, with a shared world and cross-over characters, they should also stand-alone. I also have a novella series, starting with Shadow Touch. Future installments are in the works as we speak. Part II will release next May.
The spark for the series was my first heroine, a banshee. I was looking for a mythological being that had the same kind of darkness and pathos that I love in vampires. I grabbed hold of the idea and wouldn’t let go.

*** Now for some fun info… ***
* Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
I love cool, crisp fall weather. I miss it where I live in Arizona.
* Are you a morning person or night owl?
Morning person, used to be night person. I don’t know what happened.
* What’s your favorite number?
7

Introduction to Alexandra O'Hurley & her Berserker Immortals @alexohurley @evernightpub

The first part of a three part novella series, Night of the Dragon begins the tale of six Berserker Immortals, born over one thousand years ago in Ancient Norway.  Three sets of twins created of Odin’s lightning to aid the Norse kings of old, they now fight against the evil Swartska who kill off Berserkers to feed Freyja’s hall.
Night of the Dragon is Rayne and Ryden’s tale.  Going Berserk is a short within the Midnight Seduction anthology that foreshadows Jakob’s tale, whose story, along with his twin Joran will be told in the second installment.  Finally, Eryck and Erulf will be the third and final, magical ending to the series.

Night of the Dragon by Alexandra O'Hurley
A Berserker Mate's Story, 1
Ryden and Rayne are Berserkers, immortal warriors wrought of Odin’s lightning. They are cursed to walk the Earth for one thousand years without finding love. And then they smell her...

Karli is a manager for an amusement park, and during her daily tour, she runs across the most incredible men she has ever laid eyes on. The erotic visions swirling in her head push her to the edge, and she cannot ignore the two virile men.
But can anything develop between the Berserkers and their mate with a hunter sworn to keep them apart on their trail?

Excerpt:

Very soon.”

Where were you?

Ten years ago I was still living in NJ. Still a smoker. Still working an EDJ.
Ten years ago it was a beautiful day in the northeast. I remember the clear blue sky, the sun shining, the temperature was perfect. A gorgeous day, I thought as I drove into work.
The office radio played in the background as I went about my morning duties, and shortly after I arrived, the DJs on the local NJ station said something that turned my head. “A plane hit a World Trade Center building.” Huh? Did I hear them right? Wanting to make sure I wasn’t going crazy, I went upstairs to ask the agents if they had heard the same thing. They had.
The atmosphere the rest of the morning was somber. Business ground to a halt. The phone was quiet. We were all transfixed with the news accounts coming through and absolutely stunned when they reported that the towers had fallen. [The NYPD (New York Police Department) logs the first tower's (South) collapse at 9:59 a.m., and the second tower's (North) at 10:28 a.m. The Twin Towers collapsed 29 minutes apart from each other.]
Hubby called me, all fired up and ready to go back into the military. I told him that I really didn’t want him to get back in, but understood where he was coming from and wouldn’t stop him if it was that important to him. He could see the smoke and the missing buildings from where he worked (and on the drive into work in the days to come.)
Later that afternoon, we closed the office and went home. I immediately turned on the news and watched the footage of the carnage in NYC. There’s the beautiful blue sky, the backdrop to the towers–a place I had visited, stood on the roof of one before it was closed off & people were directed to an inside observation room… to the planes flying into them… to the smoke and fire… to their collapse…
My heart went out (& still does) to the people who lost their lives in the tragedy and to their families who have been forced to live without them.
May we always remember…

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Weekend ~ 3 ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday )

#3 of Six Sentences over six weeks from 'Wild West Weekend.'

But then, why should he find anything strange about what was going on around the ranch. With every new guest who came onto the property a new flavor of fun was added to the mix and anything could happen. There was one evening a family stumbled upon a couple in the midst of an intimate act in the pool, and he had to calm all the people down about their claims over indecency and voyeurism. Just over nine months later, he received a card and a picture of a baby named, Dillon, from the couple. Then there was the haunted town down the way and his ranch’s resident ghosts. It’s a wonder anything surprised him anymore.

In remembrance of 9/11/2001…

What the sign says: "As our nation reacted to the events of September 11, many personal tributes honoring the heroes of New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. were spontaneously placed at the feet of Lady Liberty here at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino.
"We are developing plans to make the tribute a permanent part of our property providing people from all over the world an opportunity to reflect on this moment in history that brought our nation, and the world, together to honor so many innocent heroes."
