Six Sentences from Wild West Hauntings.
Another cold rush of vague feelings that she’d been here before swept over her.
* The Double D. She’d never stepped foot on the property, yet, if she had to bet her life on it, she’d have sworn she’d been on the southern Nevada ranch once upon a time. All she had ever seen of the Dougan’s place was from the few photos her sister, Marianne, had sent her, but the in-person familiarity was uncanny. Somehow she seemed to know the nuances of the land. The placement of where the buildings would be and their purpose.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Hauntings ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday @rmsotera ) ~ reprise
Six Sentences from Wild West Hauntings.
* Shocked at the eerily familiar vista of the ranch before her, Rachel Star slammed on the brakes of her economy rental car. The vehicle skidded then fishtailed. Rocks shot out from under the tires, pinging the undercarriage and flying off into the scraggy brush growing alongside the stone covered drive. A grayish brown dust cloud enveloped the automobile as she came to stop in the middle of the road. Shaking from the fleeting but chilling sensation of déjà vu, she turned on the heat and waited for the view to clear.
* Fine, gritty earth particles created an ugly sandy coat on the green car.

Happy Halloween! … & Happy New Year! ( @evernightpub @rmsotera #writer #so )
Hi everyone! Happy Halloween! And to my fellow Wiccans and those of a similar faith, Happy New Year!
* “Happy New Year?” you say. Well, yes. According to Pagan Wiccan About.com “Sunset on Samhain is the beginning of the Celtic New Year. The old year has passed, the harvest has been gathered, cattle and sheep have been brought in from the fields, and the leaves have fallen from the trees. The earth slowly begins to die around us.” Though as per Suite101 article says “some modern witches feel that the day that follows the winter solstice festival of Yule is the true Wiccan New Year.” Either way, going into a new year is usually a good time to review the year that just passed, wrap up and clear out the old and start looking toward the next year. (For more on Samhain, visit Chalice Centre)
* So I’m here today to discuss the top ten things I’d like to do differently in 2013. Granted, this list is pretty much the same as the list I made for 2012, but shortly after I created it, my health tanked and life went topsy turvey. But as they say, if you fall of the horse, get back on and try again. :)
10 – Decrease stress / be more forgiving of self
These should occur with ease as the rest of my list happens. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t still be mindful of my stress level and take measures to make myself relax and not worry so much. And if for some reason I backslide from any of my goals, I need to not freak out about it so much…just get back up on the proverbial horse and get on with things.
9 – Write down my goals
My game plan is in my head, but what I really need to do is write down my goals, post them on my desk where I can see them and keep them in the forefront of my mind.
8 – Continue to utilize social media
Continue trying to be a bit more chatty on Twitter and Facebook. See reasoning for why I’m not/it’s difficult for me in #6.
7 – Continue utilizing my blog(s)
Along the lines of #8, I’d like to become more open and share my thoughts & life on my blogs (C.R. Moss blog & Double D blog & Casey Moss blog) to help vary it from the interviews, guest posts, and line sharing I already do. But again, see number six as to why this is tough for an individual like me.
6 – More public appearances
Public appearances? Isn’t that what the social media and blogging is about? Well, yes and no. Here I’m talking about getting off-line, out of my comfort zone and being more social in the real world when it comes to my writing career and personal life. I’m an introvert though and being out in the public eye isn’t always the easiest thing. (myths about introverts) I am making strides in being more visible and getting out there. In 2011 I went to a couple of cons and in 2012 I attended a few more: EPICon; Arizona Dreamin’; RomCon; & KillerCon. I was afraid of freezing like a deer in headlights when I was in front of people discussing my work. Thankfully I didn’t. ;) In 2013 I’m looking into going to EPICon again, to the World Horror Convention 2013 in New Orleans & a writer/reader con here in Las Vegas in August http://romancenovelconvention.com/. Going to those will depend upon finances, but there are two I’ll definitely be at: KillerCon and a new readers’ convention here in Las Vegas: Hot Mojave Knights
5 – Get some sun everyday
What can I say, I spend a lot of time inside (too much time actually) at my computer working on stories and doing promotion, which makes me miss the hours that the sun is up and shining. I’ll have to be sure to catch some rays on a regular basis for sunlight’s vitamin D and mood enhancing properties.
4 – Get some exercise everyday
Like I said in number five, I spend a lot of time at the computer which means I spend a lot of time being sedentary. Not good. I really need to be better about this and start walking and weight lifting again to combat the spread. Thing is, there are so many places here in Las Vegas I could go to walk around and people watch at, it’s a wonder I don’t take better advantage of the opportunity. Think of all the research I could do for stories!
3 – Eat better
In line with getting some sun and exercise, I need to eat better foods and not grab junk food when I’m deep into work (or even when I’m not deep into writing). What’s the point of building a prosperous writing career if I’m not feeding the machine properly and being healthy, right?
2 – Write at least five days a week
Confession time… I’m one of those writers who likes to be inspired, at least a little, before I sit down to write. Except this hasn’t been working for me very well. I’ve been writing in spurts, a whole lot at one time then nothing for a while. But to meet my goals, I have to be more consistent. I need to make sure I’m doing something at least five days a week so my series stories can get done. There’s the Wild West stories in the Double D Ranch Tales saga. There are some stories I’m working on that follows up with the characters from my story Chasing Miss Kringle that’s in EP’s holiday anthology Stockings & Suspenders. Then there are the urban fantasy stories under my Casey Moss pen name that follow the story line started in AFK in Evernight’s Keyboards and Kink anthology. Then there are several other stories I’m accountable for and ideas I’d like to get started on and done as soon as possible, but I have to plant butt in chair and write. And getting the books written will only happen if I write every day and keep distractions at bay.
1 - Time management
Can I say it again? Time management… Time management… Time management… Once upon a time, I used to be really good at it. Then again, I also used to be really busy and as ‘they’ say - You want something done? Give it to a busy person. Now that I’m not as busy, my procrastination trait has reared its ugly head. I used to use a palm pilot to help manage my calendar, but now I’m hoping to get my butt in gear and use my iPad to schedule things out. Time management is in the number one slot because I know if I got a handle on how I use all the hours in the day the rest of my list would fall into place with ease, my life would run more smoothly, and I could get more stories out to my faithful readers.
So how about you? Anything different you’re hoping to do in 2013? If you’re not ready to make your own list yet, how about checking out my latest release, written with my writing partner RM Sotera, Wild West Hauntings ~ now available at Evernight Publishing. Thanks!

In Wild West Hauntings there’s a ghost, a poltergeist, the fear of losing one’s mind and the fear of harm coming to an unborn child. Spooky good times!

* In life and the afterlife, on the Double D Ranch one belief holds true—the power of love changes lives.
* With cowboys, ghosts, modern day women, hot dreams, pre-wedding relations and a bit of sexy time travel, life promises to be one wild time on the ranch again.
* Rachel Star has met the man of her dreams … literally. Too bad he’s a ghost. When true love crosses boundaries from dreams to reality and across time, the Double D ranch is the place it happens. It takes the love of a man from the past, Dalton Dougan, to bring love full circle in the present for Rachel.
* Bristol Ashcombe, soon to be Dougan, is ready to have her baby … and so is a poltergeist. Can the love of a woman for her man and child sustain her during the most horrible of terrors? Can the love between family and friends really dispel the evil haunting them?
* Wild West Hauntings — Double D Ranch Tales (Book 2), a contemporary, paranormal, erotic romance story set in Nevada.

A Halloween Q&A with 'Wild West Hauntings' co-author: C.R. Moss ( @evernightpub @rmsotera #writer #so )
In preparation for the release of our spooky tale, Wild West Hauntings, I wanted to share a Halloween interview I did once upon a time…
Q1: What do you like most about Halloween?
A1: I’ve always liked the Halloween season – the crisp air, the colors, the sense of the macabre and all the horror films that come out. Then there’s the candy… ;) The night of Halloween is subdued. I meditate and reflect on the past year and coming year and honor those who have gone beyond the veil.
Q2: When creating a Paranormal/Supernatural/Horror tale, how do you choose what creatures/beings you want to write about?
A2: The characters and story normally dictate what creatures/beings I’ll use. Or if I get a creature/being in mind a story will wrap around it.
Q3: Have you ever dressed up like one of your characters for Halloween?
A3: Not yet, but that’d be a fun idea.
Q4: What scares you the most?
A4: I dislike spiders, and I have a fear of heights.
Q5: What is the first horror book/story that you remember reading?
A5: Stephen King's Pet Sematary
Q6: Do you look to your own phobias to find subject matter? Are your stories the products of nightmares, childhood experiences, fantasies?
A6: Sometimes I’ll use dreams/nightmares for my stories. And yes, I’ll incorporate phobias to add to the fear and tension of a story.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Hauntings ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday @rmsotera @evernightpub ) for Oct. 21
Coming soon (October 26, 2012) to Evernight Publishing! Six Sentences from Wild West Hauntings
* That she’d been having a relationship with a man in her dreams? Very juicy dreams with someone whose facial features have been nondescript? I know his name, have heard his voice, felt his body as we’ve loved each other, but I have no clue what he looks like since his face is always in dream shadow. With a deep sigh, she slid out of the car into the dry winter air of the high desert and grabbed her luggage from the trunk. Why am I even worrying about this? He’s just a figment of my overly-stressed mind.

A short Q&A with 'Wild West Hauntings' co-author: C.R. Moss ( #FF @evernightpub @rmsotera )
Hi all! We're nearing the release date for Wild West Hauntings. Yay!
Earlier in the week you had a glimpse into RM Sotera's writing life, and today I wanted to share a few questions that have been asked of me in the past & my answers. :)
Q1: What is the best writing advice you ever received?
A1: Plant butt in chair and write every day. Turn off that internal editor and just write. Granted, sometimes I think this bit of advice is easier said than done—life gets in the way, the editing muse won’t shut up—but still, the advice is sound if one wants to be a successful writer.
Q2: What is a “must-have” for a writer’s bookshelf?
A2: I have a few… A good dictionary and thesaurus or links to online versions (for the basics); The Romance Writers’ Phrase Book by Jean Kent, Candace Shelton & The Millennium Phrase Book for Romance Writers by Rebecca Andrews (for creative inspiration); The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler (for story structure/inspiration)
Q3: How do you cope with set-backs?
A3: My level on how well I deal — let it roll off, get angry, get down, etc. — depends upon the set-back, but I usually have a good talk with a close friend or two and/or hubby and they help me to find solutions and feel better about what’s going on.

A look at 'Wild West Hauntings' co-author: RM Sotera ( @rmsotera @evernightpub #writer #SO )
Today we have co-author of Wild West Weekend & Wild West Hauntings, RM Sotera, visiting. RM is a romance vixen stuck in the body of a prim and proper woman. A transplant to Las Vegas, by day she is a wife, mom, taxi driver, counselor, and psychologist to her wild and, at times, crazy friends. But when the family goes to bed and the house is dark, she seeks refuge in her office where her deepest and sometimes darkest desires take hold. And…ultimately a story is born. She’s here today offering some insight about her life as an author.
So, RM, what inspired you to become a writer?
My imagination needed a place to come alive, thus on the pages of a book I can make this happen. I’ve always kept diaries and journals, so for me writing has always been a part of my life.
When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
My first book was over 100,000 words, and I attempted and finished it while attending graduate classes. I needed something else to concentrate on besides academic journals and books, and I had a story that was itching to be told. The book had been revised and edited several times, and sent to several agents. The manuscript had over 60 rejection letters to its name (and I’m damned proud of them!) before it was picked up.
How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
Many.
What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
I write paranormal romance with erotic elements. I also have a humorous streak to my work. I’ve written contemporary. I’ve always loved vampires, witches, and things that go bump in the night, which is why paranormal romance is my favorite. It totally suits me. Though I am also working on a young adult, my favorite genre is paranormal, hands down.
What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
Let’s see…the best advice I received was to never give up on the dream if it’s what you really want to do, and to grow a thick skin. Also, to make time everyday to write, even if only for a short amount of time. And, don’t quit my day job hastily, wait to see what transpires. The worst piece of advice… I’m still waiting for the worst advice. To be honest, I hope it never comes.
How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
I’ve become quite the connoisseur with rejection letters. I can honestly say that at first, they devastated me. However, I started to get pissed after the 10th letter and decided that for every rejection I received I would send out 3 more query letters. Yeah…I’ve grown some thick skin and I keep moving forward. How did I celebrate when my first book was published? I jumped up and down in the privacy of my office, then had lunch with two of my favorite people. Seeing my words and name in print has been a dream come true. And I can honestly say…it keeps getting better. I love being optimistic, so I believe the best is yet to come! Every night before I go to bed, I hum the words to Don’t Stop Believing by Journey; it’s this writer’s lullaby. :)
*** Now for some fun info… ***
What’s your favorite color?
My favorite colors are red, black and grey. I like black the best even though it’s not considered a color.
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Say what? Forget the ice cream I’ll take the jar of cherries instead. And I’d like to place them all over… :)
Are you a morning person or night owl?
I am a morning person. And sometimes a night owl. I’m up by 5 am daily, and I can usually be found at my computer typing away at some story. I do my best writing in the early, early hours of the day. My muse, Styxx, loves to wake me at 2 AM.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Hauntings ( #sixsunday @6_Sunday @rmsotera @evernightpub ) for Oct. 14
Coming soon (October 26, 2012) to Evernight Publishing! Six Sentences from Wild West Hauntings
* Great. Not able to ignore it this time, Rachel bent forward and dropped her forehead onto the steering wheel. It wasn’t just any man speaking softly in the recesses of her consciousness, but Dalton, the man who’d been haunting her dreams the past few years. Now I know I really need some good sleep since he’s talking to me while I’m awake.
* What would her psychology professors, or the associates at the clinic where she’d recently been interviewed think if they knew what she’d been experiencing? That she’d been having a relationship with a man in her dreams?

~ Excerpt from Wild West Hauntings ~
* She shuffled out of the graveyard, sparing him a glance as she walked by. He didn’t move to touch her or to say a kind word. His demeanor was like the night air, arctic and biting.
* Rachel blinked and the world around her shifted. For a brief moment her head swam with dizziness. Her vision cleared as if a thin, gauze-like veil had been lifted. She closed her eyes again, opened them and found herself on the path between the gravesite and the lodge, her bare feet irritated by the cold ground and craggy rocks.
* What the hell? I wasn’t dreaming?
* Hugging herself and rubbing her arms, she peeked over her shoulder. No one was in the cemetery. All she saw were the gnarled shadows created between the moonshine and trees—monster arms and claw-like shapes reminiscent of childhood nightmares. She bit off the urge to scream and ran toward the warmth of the building.

* A frigid touch on her shoulder startled her. She jumped to her feet and turned. “Dalton?”
* He looked strange, pale, as if he suffered from being freezing cold. “What are you doing here?”
* “I felt drawn to come here. I thought it was you pulling me. If not…” She glanced around. Shadows did a macabre dance over the gravesite. Her stomach roiled. “Then what are you doing here?”
* “You don’t belong here.” He raised a shaky arm and pointed at her. “You shouldn’t be here.”
* Why was he acting so weird? “Dalton? What’s going on? Are you all right?” She reached out and stepped toward him, but he backed away.
* “You need to go.” His arm swung and aimed toward the way she came. “You don’t know what you’ve done.”

* The unseen force compelling her to the family plot directed her to the center of the gravesite. She knelt before the dark gray headstone that was busted in half. The words on it were worn and chipped away, undecipherable. The letters on the other stones near it were just as bad. A light gray one a few feet away, no matter how she clawed and scraped at it to see the name, wouldn’t come clean. Something deep within her had her yearning to see the name, the dates, and the phrase written underneath the main information. How could she figure out who was buried in the graves if she couldn’t read the markers?

* On the ground behind the heavy piece of furniture was a hefty quartz crystal paperweight. He picked it up from next to the power strip. If the plug was loose and this hit it… He shrugged and placed it back on the desk. Minutes later, everything under and behind the piece of furniture was secure and tight, tacked down. Marianne, or the so-called ghosts, wouldn’t be able to cause any more problems. At least he hoped not.

~ Excerpt from Wild West Weekend ~
* An hour later, Dakota emerged from the office, frustrated and hungry. It had taken all his restraint not to ream Marianne up one side and down the other. He had bit his tongue to keep from accusing her of sabotage. Her actions screamed she had created the issue on purpose just so she could lure him away from Cassie, spend some time with him. His theories stemmed from how she had leaned on him, asked questions in that purr of a voice of hers. She had also stroked his arm and back as she watched what he was doing. The woman and her suggestive tactics were like an annoying fly that wouldn’t quit buzzing in his ear.
* Thankfully, the fix was easy, once he found out what the problem was. All he had to do was plug the power cord of the twelve outlet surge protector back into the wall behind the desk and restart the system. When he had confronted her about it, she claimed her foot must have hit the wires under the desk just right to have the cord dislodge. That or it was their resident ghosts.

Six Sentence Sunday ~ Wild West Weekend ( @evernightpub @rmsotera #sixsunday @6_Sunday )
Six sentences from Wild West Weekend
* But then, why should he find anything strange about what was going on around the ranch. With every new guest who came onto the property a new flavor of fun was added to the mix and anything could happen. There was one evening a family stumbled upon a couple in the midst of an intimate act in the pool, and he had to calm all the people down about their claims over indecency and voyeurism. Just over nine months later, he received a card and a picture of a baby named, Dillon, from the couple. Then there was the haunted town down the way, and his ranch’s resident ghosts. It’s a wonder anything surprised him anymore.
