Lisa K. Nielsen & 'Bygones' @lisakaynielsen @GoddessFish #RomanticSuspense

Today we have author Lisa K. Nielsen visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Lisa K. Nielsen was born and raised in West Dundee, Illinois. Her love of books started early on, with a particular interest in mysteries.
* Lisa received a B.S. degree in zoology from Iowa State University. She then attended the Physician Assistant program at the University of Iowa.
* After graduation, she moved to Peoria, Illinois where her first position as a physician assistant was in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. She then moved on to the specialty of urology.
* Her work was busy and time consuming, but she always made time to read. After years of dreaming about it, she finally put a pen to paper and wrote down some stories of her own.
A look into...

* Dr. Alexandra Hadley would prefer to leave small town life behind forever, but her father’s death forces her hand. In his will, he has left her his medical practice and Georgian-style mansion, and it is up to her to hire a new doctor and settle his estate. Fresh out of medical school, Lexi is happily settled in Chicago, doing research in tandem with her boyfriend. Brian, fifteen years older with impressive credentials and sophisticated tastes, has no interest in visiting her birthplace of Glenmore, Illinois. Lexi soon discovers that home has its attractions, the first being the handsome contractor Joe Manning, her secret crush in high school. Seeing patients is also surprisingly satisfying. When Joe offers to remodel her father’s den, Lexi jumps at the chance to erase sad memories and become better acquainted with her gorgeous handyman. Even as the charms of Glenmore draw her in, a series of break-ins at her father’s house make her fear for her safety. Is the intruder searching for something other than valuables? And how determined is the culprit? Lexi finds her fragile happiness at risk, including her newfound love for Joe Manning.
~ Excerpt ~
* Joe closed his eyes for a moment. “You were wearing these tight black jeans with high-heeled boots.” He opened his eyes. “And this slinky sleeveless top that was all shiny and sparkly.”
* Lexi gasped and covered her mouth with her hand.
* “And your blonde hair was all long and sexy and sleek, and you had some glittery stuff in it.”
* Lexi flattened her palm on his chest. “Oh my God. You do remember.”
* “Of course I do. I sorta had a crush on you too.”
* Her breath caught as Joe’s eyes flashed. His chest was warm and firm beneath her palm. “No way.”
* Joe leaned in and whispered, “Way.”
* Lexi was mesmerized by his lips as they moved in on hers, feeling helpless to stop him. Not really wanting to stop him. He kissed her softly, his lips burning hot. She melted under them as he cupped the back of her head and stroked his tongue inside her mouth. Lexi moaned with need, her body tingling, surprised at her reaction. The last time she’d been instantly aroused by a kiss was ... never.
* Stroking her fingers up his chest, she wrapped her arm around his neck and kissed him back. Their tongues tangled as they moved closer together. Her skin was hot and tight where Joe clutched her hip. What is going on with me? This never happened when she was with Brian. Oh, God! Brian!?
* Lexi tore her lips away from Joe’s. She moved her hand back to his chest, this time to gently push him away. “Joe, I can’t—”
* “It’s okay. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”
* Lexi met his gaze, her heart pounding. “No, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have kissed you back. It’s just that ... I’m seeing someone.”

Lea Hart & 'Whirlwind' @leahartauthor @GoddessFish #Contemporary #Romance

Today we have author Lea Hart visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* I live in Southern California and write stories about sassy, smart women and the alpha men who fall for them. When I'm not writing, I take care of my daughters and try to take long walks. I believe in the power of a big glass of wine, the right pair of shoes, and a big dose of sarcasm.

* Sara Montgomery is being targeted by one of the United States’ most feared organized crime groups. What options does she have when the Outfit decides they want to bring her in? Will the FBI provide enough protection or will she need more?
* Grady Merrick is a partner in the Florida office of SAI and discovers the threat and knows he has no choice but to protect his neighbor. His sexy, beautiful neighbor. This is one assignment he’s going to enjoy.
* Watch what happens when two people find themselves in the throes of a violent and destructive force. Will they survive the events or be caught in the whirlwind?
~ Excerpt ~
* “Why didn’t you say something? You could’ve given me a heads-up,” he replied.
* “I’ve spoken less than a dozen words to you over the last year. I wasn’t about to come over and have that be our first conversation. I figured you knew and didn’t care.”
* Agnes shushed them from the other side of the couch. “You two be quiet. I can’t hear anything.”
* “Turn up your hearing aid,” Sara called out.
* Grady sat back and wondered when his life had started to go down the toilet. Being notorious was never something he thought would happen. And yet, here it was. The show finally caught his attention when all three ladies sighed and clapped their hands. “What just happened?”
* “The one she’s interested in confessed he’s falling for her. They just kissed for the first time,” Sara responded.
* “Don’t get too excited,” Gladys said. “She doesn’t end up with him. I checked out the website with all the spoilers, and she doesn’t choose him.”
* “Don’t tell us any more. I want to be surprised,” Sara responded.
* “You know this is a scripted show. None of this is real,” Grady whispered.
* “That kiss he just gave her was about as real as things get. Trust me…I know.”
* That was a fairly cryptic comment. He studied her for a moment and remembered what Dane had said about her having a lot on her plate. It was time to get to know his neighbor and see what she was all about. It seemed fair, since she’d been in the front row of the freak show that had been his life for the last several months. Plus, she smelled good. Grinning, he settled back and watched the show. If he’d been a betting man, he would have placed money on Sara not having an ounce of drama in her life. He moved his arm along the back of the couch and looked forward to spending time with the girl next door.

* The first in a gritty new series featuring sheriff’s detective Katrina Williams, as she investigates moonshine, murder, and the ghosts of her own past…
* BODY OF PROOF
* Katrina Williams left the Army ten years ago disillusioned and damaged. Now a sheriff’s detective at home in the Missouri Ozarks, Katrina is living her life one case at a time—between mandated therapy sessions—until she learns that she’s a suspect in a military investigation with ties to her painful past.
* The disappearance of a local girl is far from the routine distraction, however. Brutally murdered, the girl’s corpse is found by a bottlegger whose information leads Katrina into a tangled web of teenagers, moonshiners, motorcycle clubs, and a fellow veteran battling illness and his own personal demons. Unraveling each thread will take time Katrina might not have as the Army investigator turns his searchlight on the devastating incident that ended her military career. Now Katrina will need to dig deep for the truth—before she’s found buried…
~ Excerpt ~
* “I know your Uncle Orson,” he said. “Been fishing with him more times than I can remember.”
* I crouched to be close to the ground and kept poking around the body with my stick, then sketching things in the pad. Clare’s talk was actually soothing to hear. Normal, even though he was doing it to keep his mind off of something not normal in his life at all.
* “Your daddy too. Way back when.”
* I think I nodded, reacting more to the sound than his words. Tossing my stick aside, I stood, then circled the body. Each time I stopped I added to my sketches. I had to force myself to look into the face. Into where the face had been. I sketched. Then I looked away. I sketched her hair. Then I looked away.
* “There are monsters in the woods,” Clare said, his back still to me. I was listening then. “It used to be a joke. When I was a kid, people talked about Momo, the Missouri monster. It was like a local Bigfoot. But the real monsters are people, aren’t they?”
* I didn’t answer him.
* “Perverts.” He spit the word out. “Monsters that do that to children. There isn’t hate big enough for them nor a hell deep enough. This will rile some people up. He lives in one of those piece-of-crap mobile homes in that big development off of F Highway. You know, over by the McKenna farm.”
* “Who does?” I had stopped writing and was paying very close attention to Mr. Bolin at that point.

* “True Detective” meets H.P. Lovecraft in this chilling novel of murder, mystery, and slow-mounting dread from acclaimed author Mary SanGiovanni . . .
* It begins with a freak snowstorm in May. Hit hardest is the rural town of Colby, Connecticut. Schools and businesses are closed, powerlines are down, and police detective Jack Glazier has found a body in the snow. It appears to be the victim of a bizarre ritual murder. It won’t be the last. As the snow piles up, so do the sacrifices. Cut off from the rest of the world, Glazier teams up with an occult crime specialist to uncover a secret society hiding in their midst.
* The gods they worship are unthinkable. The powers they summon are unstoppable. And the things they will do to the good people of Colby are utterly, horribly unspeakable…
~ Excerpt ~
* Still, most people believed this storm would be the last of them for the year, and patiently suffered the weather to exhale its arctic breath one last time over all. The town of Colby warmed up the snowplows and salt/sand trucks in preparation for winter’s last hur- rah, and the townsfolk swarmed the local supermarkets, the Targets and Walmarts, the Costcos and the gas stations, to stock up on gaso- line and supplies.
* Most were still blissfully unaware of the body found hanging from a tree in Edison Park, but they felt it, in the vaguest, unarticu- lated way. They felt the cold trying to wrench their skin from their bones, and they felt something else, too—a kind of forlorn loneliness trying to wrench peace of mind from their souls. Just as they stocked up on food and bottled water, shovels and gloves, they squinted into the night outside their homes before drawing blinds and locking doors, double-checking on the kids in bed and huddling closer to each other than usual. Something other than a late winter was in the air, and it chilled them just as much, if not more, when they thought too long about it.
* Though not even the gossips would give voice to it, the people of Colby knew something was coming with the snow.

~ Excerpt ~
* “I think you will marry.” Regret dripped from his voice.
* “No.” Her eyes filled with tears and she moved away to hide in the shadow of one of the pillars surrounding the veranda.
* His mind screamed at him to apologize and walk away, but his body disobeyed and he followed her into the shadows. He tugged the glove from his hand and gently caressed the soft skin from her elbow to the cap sleeve of her gown. He dropped his hand.
* She turned, only a breath away. The warmth of her body reached him though they didn’t touch.
* “Please do not cry.” The soft tone hardly resembled his voice. She moved him in a way no one else ever had.
* “I won’t. I’m sorry to make such a scene.” She dabbed at her eyes. Once again, the tigress returned, sad, fierce and distant. The tears made her seem even fiercer, somehow making her even more perfect. This was no stuffy debutante, with little thought for anyone but herself. She was soft, emotional, filled with life and he wanted nothing else in the world but to pull her into his arms, to watch her tigress’s eyes close as his lips covered hers.
* “I think I’m going to kiss you, Miss Braighton.” He inched closer.
* Her eyes widened and she gasped, as he rubbed his lips lightly against hers. “No.” The word was less than a whisper.
* “Are you sure?” He asked, pressing his cheek to hers.

* Emmanuel, Chevalier de Cantière, youngest son of a baron, is happiest raising horses far from his complicated family. When news comes his mother is deathly ill, he races to her side only to find she has apparently recovered and moved on, leaving behind her companion, Catherine.
* Catherine de Fouet blends into the background, saving up so she’ll never have to wait on waspish, scheming old ladies like the baronesse again. She has no interest in a resentful gentleman, estranged from his mother, no matter how broad his shoulders or intriguing the wounded soul behind his handsome face. She just needs someone to escort her back to Versailles.
* But Catherine is suspected of poisoning the baronesse. She rebuffs a pushy courtier who tries to use blackmail to make her his mistress, and her reputation hangs by a thread.
* The chevalier wants more than anything to protect this woman whose prickly exterior hides sweetness and passion. They need his family to help him through court intrigues—almost as much as they need each other.

* “Mademoiselle?”
* She shook her head slightly.
* He walked to her, but she turned her face from him. “Catherine?” he said, his voice softer. His heart clenched. “Are you ill?”
* She shook her head and lifted her handkerchief to her face with a trembling hand.
* He knelt beside her and took her free hand. She froze. He pressed her hand between his, wanting to kiss it, but not sure she would allow it. “Was it d’Oronte?”
* She sniffed. “Yes. No.”
* “What did he do?” Manu released her hand. “I will call him out.”
* “No!” She finally looked at him, her eyes red-rimmed and her face pale but her usual glare in place.
* She sniffed and looked down at her hands.
* “What can I do?”
* “Nothing.”
* Frustrated, he stood and threw his hands up. “I will kill him.”
* “You will not.”
* “What did he do?”
* “You are not my father. Or my brother. Or even my cousin.”
* “I’m not your husband or lover, either, but I won’t let that idiot do anything to you.”
* She stared at him for several tense seconds, her surprise overwhelming her other emotions. Her expression crumpled, and she covered her eyes with her handkerchief.
* He went back down on one knee and took her hand again.

* Kurt has used his contact with CalFire, Los Angeles County and Ventura County Fire Departments, as well as the ATF and DEA to write fact-based (“faction”) novels. He has attended classes at El Camino Fire Academy and trained in wildland firefighting, arson investigation and hazardous materials response. He has also attended the ATF and DEA Citizen’s Academies. After graduating from the DEA Citizen’s Academy in 2014, he began work on The Lizard’s Tale.
* Kurt has built an avid fan base among first responders and other readers. A graduate of Brown University and Columbia Law School, Kurt was previously a financial executive and semi-professional bicycle racer. He was also Chairman of the UCLA/Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Foundation for several years.

A look into...
~ Blurb ~
* Kurt Kamm has written a novel that's a literary crime novel, with a strong thread of non-fiction running through it. The Lizard's Tale is a tale of crime—with an a wide-ranging cast of characters.
* When the DEA goes up against the Sinaloa Cartel, an orphan and an endangered lizard are caught in the conflict. The action moves from Guatemala to Mexico to Catalina Island off the coast of California.
* Alejandro, a middle class Guatemalan, wants his share, and makes a deal with the cartel. Now he’s risking his life to deliver the goods.
* El Dedo, a brilliant financier, is the Sinaloa Cartel’s banker. He worries about what to do with the billions of dollars collecting dust in his underground vault.
* Ryan, a DEA Special Agent, needs to make a high profile case to get a promotion. Is the big yacht headed for California carrying a Mexican drug shipment?
* Kate, a wildlife officer on Catalina Island, smells smoke. When she heads out in the middle of the night to investigate a fire, she makes an astonishing discovery.
* Jorge, an orphan from the streets of Mexico, is abandoned in the United States. Will he find his way back home and track down his mother’s killer?
~ Excerpt ~
* The General’s tank was near empty. Alejandro stopped and took down one of the red plastic gas containers. After he filled the tank, he extracted the second of the three bottles of beer from his cooler. “Bienvenido a Mexico,” he said aloud and held the bottle up in an imaginary toast. The beer was warm, but he enjoyed it anyway. He had overcome the harsh Guatemalan roads and crossed the border safely with his cargo. Now all he had to do was survive the trip through Mexico.
* Ahead of him lay 2,500-kilometers on Mexico Highway 200, the main road along the Pacific Coast. The trip north would take Alejandro past Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlan before reaching Culiacán. The condition of the road itself had been the challenge in Guatemala, but that was not the big risk on the journey ahead. Highway 200 was a winding, two-lane paved road. The real danger was what Alejandro might encounter. He had been warned not to travel at night. Drunk drivers, livestock, pedestrians, and unlighted farm equipment were some of the lesser hazards. The real threat, day or night however, was robbery and hijacking, and he had read several reports of travelers coming upon roadblocks set by bandits armed with machetes and machine guns, decked out in bulletproof vests draped with hand grenades. Alejandro planned to keep moving and cover about 800 kilometers. By evening, he hoped to reach Acapulco.

Lucy Farago & 'Sins That Haunt' @lucyfarago @GoddessFish #RomanticSuspense

Today we have author Lucy Farago visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Lucy Farago knows there is nothing like a happy sigh at the end of a good book. With the encouragement of her loving husband, she wrote her first manuscript. An unpublished historical, it sits in a file on her computer, there to remind her how much fun she had learning the craft and becoming part of an industry whose books make you believe anything is possible. A big fan of Agatha Christie, she set out to write her first romantic suspense novel. Thrilled to be a published author, Lucy also teaches yoga, enjoys cooking, and saying what other people are thinking. In her fantasy world, her beautiful Siberian husky, Loki, doesn’t shed and her three kids clean up after themselves. Alas, that fantasy will never see fruition.

A look into...
~ Blurb ~
* The glitz and glamour of Las Vegas hide a multitude of sins. And in Lucy Farago’s show-stopping series, a lawyer and an FBI agent take a walk on the seedy side, where greed breeds a deadly desperation...
* Civil attorney Shannon Joyce walks the line of law and order, but she learned from day one how to put up a good front—thanks to her con man father. Thirteen years ago, she left the east coast and her life of crime behind. Her high school sweetheart, Noah, was collateral damage, but some things can’t be helped. But now there’s no escape when her past comes roaring down the Strip—in the oh-so-tempting form of the man she left behind...
* Special Agent Noah Monroe has Shannon exactly where he wants her—in the back of his car in handcuffs. Her grifter father has been murdered, and the FBI needs Shannon to keep one of his scams in play to bag the big bad guy who was financing him. Once again a pawn in someone’s else game, Shannon will have to trust her instincts to survive both the peril threatening her—and the passion Noah reignites…
~ Excerpt ~
* “What the hell, Noah.” Controlling her temper in court was one thing, but here, in this stupid car, parked at the airport, it sounded a lot like the FBI was blackmailing her. What, did everyone want a piece of her? First some lunatic holds her hostage so he could kill her best friend. Then another piece of garbage holds her hostage by threatening to expose what she’d done as a kid. And now the feds wanted in on that action?
* “Hear me out.” He held up his hands. “Everyone agrees—”
* “Everyone?”
* “Hanover PD and my team.”
* “Oh. Wow, there are a whole slew of you? Don’t I feel loved?”
* “We want your help. In exchange we’ll see about getting you off their suspect list. No one will know you were ever on it.”
* She shook her head in disgust. “You’re blackmailing me.”
* “Think of it as you do the agency a favor and we do you one.”
* “I can’t possibly imagine what it is you all think I can do for you.” She was a lawyer. None of her skills would help them unless they were planning to sue someone.
* “What is it? You want the file. Fine, I’ll give it you.” At this point, anything to avoid this mess.
* “My team would like to see it, but no, that’s not it.
* “Then what, for heaven’s sake? Spit it out,” she said, ready to pull her hair out—or his.
* “We need you to continue in his place.”

Today we have author Sandra McGregor visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Sandra McGregor, was challenged by her husband in 2000 to not wait until retirement in 2005 to write the book he had heard about since they married. Sandra picked up the gauntlet he threw down and her first “sweet” romance sold in 2007.
* Sandra is a member of RWA and Georgia Romance Writers where she served two years on the board as treasurer. She now lives as an empty-nester in Georgia with her husband of several decades and her cat, Jack, who rules the roost and any lap he chooses to occupy. Alexandra Forry & 'Confessions of Us' @forryalexandra @GoddessFish #Romance

Today we have author Alexandra Forry visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Alexandra Forry has an incredible talent for living vicariously through the colorful and intriguing escapades of her strong female characters and successful leading men. Her first book, “Omerta Affair,” based on the true story of mafia boss Tony Torino and his paramour Evelyn Rosenberg has recently been adapted and re-released as “Timeless Endings”--romance fiction. “Wildflower,” is an adventure in coming of age for both a young orphan and her repressed aunt who is trapped in a destructive marriage. It is a beautiful story of life, hope, growth, and triumph and deals with many of the traumas of youth, such as bullying.
* Alexandra Forry is familiar with life’s challenges. She was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now she lives with her loving family in Williamsburg, Virginia. Alexandra has conquered the limitations of Cerebral Palsy to write exciting and engaging novels. She has completed a number of talks and internet book tours and is a member of the Las Vegas Romance Writers and RWA. She is currently working on her seventh book.

Today Alexandra Forry will be talking about the first real book that had a big impact on her.
* I was 20 years old and at the time I was a volunteer at a library close to where I live. One day, after reading all of the young adult books in the library, I asked my friend, who was a librarian, for a good romantic writer who wasn't risqué on their love scenes and she told me about LaVyrle Spencer. So she took me to the romance section and she help me pick out a book by LaVyrle Spencer called Hometown Girl.
* Here is a short summery of what the book is about that I’ve copied off of Goodreads.com:
* Eighteen years ago, young Tess McPhail left tiny Wintergreen, Missouri, for Nashville and never looked back. Now one of country music's brightest lights, "Mac" McPhail is a millionairess many times over, whose career is her life. At thirty-five, Mac has no time for marriage, children, or kinfolk - until her sisters insist she come home to help care for their widowed mother. Assuming a month in Wintergreen will be merely dreary, Mac is unprepared for what awaits her. After almost two decades of public adoration, she is suddenly a nonperson - insulted by her jealous older sister, enraged by her intractable mother, ignored by Kenny Kronek, the next-door neighbor she mercilessly taunted all through high school. A handsome divorce who dotes upon his teenage daughter, Casey, Kenny is widely respected in the community. Now he refuses to give Mac even the time of day. Once she discovers Casey is a promising country music talent, Mac assumes the role of mentor. She gradually becomes an integral part of life in Wintergreen, and the feigned indifference between Mac and Kenny turns to playful bickering, then passion. By month's end, Mac McPhail has not only grown to treasure the priceless solidarity of family and community, but also opened up her heart to love. Yet what was possible in Wintergreen appears a naive fantasy back in Nashville: Is there room for caring and commitment in the realm of superstardom - or is a woman worshipped by millions destined always to be alone?
* I really like how this story play out, how Tess went home to take care of her mother and ends up taking Casey under her wing and falling in love with the next-door boy that Tess ignored growing up. In a way coming back home to Wintergreen, Tess’s life change forever.
* When I was done reading this book, I ended up reading almost all of LaVyrle Spencer’s books that I could get my hands on. I fall in love with LaVyrle Spencer’s writing style and how she made the two lovers fall in love and how real to life it was. LaVyrle Spencer is one of my favorite authors to read. She write books that are true to life and that was an big impact on me.
* I want to thank C.R. Moss for the honor of having me and my book CONFESSIONS OF US on this blog today. If you have any questions or comments, I will be happy to answer.

TK Thompson & 'The Dark Eve' @darkeveseries @GoddessFish #Fantasy

Today we have author TK Thompson visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* I was born in Provo, UT and raised in copper mining towns in-between Arizona and New Mexico. I can be compared to a lizard. The warm weather makes a great home, but I have always had a love for the rain and overcast skies, extremely contradictory from my given habitat. That’s how I see myself sometimes, a lover of opposites. I would consider my childhood to be groundless when it came to my imagination. I was trapped inside my own mind and I believe I learned the world in small harsh but necessary truths, like a slow awakening. My little stories had their encompassing place along with underdeveloped drawing skills. But rationality whispered in my ears through my upbringing. I sought out what I felt to be important, the events of graduating high school, Silver City, NM 1999. I went to a safe community college in Thatcher, AZ. They say that college is a large defining time in a young person’s life. It’s where they start to wonder about who they are, what they know as truth, and far away from those that defined it for them. I was of course set with innate knowledge and experience and given power with irrational brain resources. My heart had plenty of stitches and I gave many to others. But I could not find peace in a single person. My ideas of life, love, and the world that I wanted to exist in felt unattainable. Having the whole picture felt like an impossible task. I went on a mission for my church in Washington, where I happily got my rain and clouds. Spending eighteen months dedicated to serving others and not yourself is a mind-opening task. It set me up to find the true roots within and be ready to insult my future husband Dustin Thompson when he walked through the door. I am as plain as I want to be. I have three crazy children to help fuel my life and since have received my Bachelors Degree in business management, UOP. But most of all I have tapped back into my imagination, pushed aside all rationality, and finished one of my best thoughts so far. Every day I continue to face my vulnerabilities.

Today TK Thompson will be talking about the first book she read that had a big impact on her.
* The first book that I remember connecting to was Bridge to Terabithia. I struggled liking to read as a child and was always very much stuck in my own head. This book resonated to me probably because it was a story of a child who was isolated and had poor family relationships. Which was my experience. I also was very much an imaginative person. Like the female character Leslie, I had whole worlds inside me and I hardly ever focused on anything else.

* Together with their dark, mysterious female captain, Acantha – who’ll run her sword through anyone who looks at her the wrong way – Basile and his fellow swashbuckling bandits sail the globe, fighting hordes of terrifying supernatural creatures that would make even the hardiest buccaneer quake with fear.
* Together with his newfound crew mates, Basile must help with finding Acantha’s sister – who’s been missing for over a year – while being consumed with trying to solve the mystery of Acantha’s illusive past – before the evil Wraith King sends all of them to a premature watery grave.

* “She walked into town with only the clothes on her back. She changed everything. I’m not saying she was responsible for everything. No person can have that much power. But she was a force of nature, only eighteen, more beautiful than any one person should be. With so much authority in her that she could take whatever came at her. Wild, impulsive, untamable like an animal that had been caged its entire life and had just been granted freedom. She had so much life in her. Her smile…” he paused as he remembered it with an affectionate yet devastating look upon his face, “she was the only person I could have ever loved.”
* He said it with finality. Basile tried to imagine the place he spoke of, Dagan as a young man running around with the captain, going swimming, being in love, but there was no reality in which he could imagine that. The person he knew was not the person that Dagan portrayed. The captain was dark, stern, and intolerant. He had never imagined he would see a smile on her face. Until now, he recalled her smile. It was beautiful, perfect, and what made it even more picturesque as he remembered it, was that it was genuine. Feelings for this old man had to exist inside her for her to visit him every year. Everything inside Basile screamed that he shouldn’t believe this story, but there was a small hint of skeptical possibility. What else did he have to believe?
