What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* R. Arundel is a practising surgeon. This experience brings realism to the story. The novel asks what would happen if a surgeon were to develop the perfect face transplant. This would allow people to have a new face, in essence create a new identity. You can create the perfect double, the perfect Doppelganger.

Today R. Arundel will be talking about what kind of writer he is.
* I am a fiction writer. I try to make my stories intricate, enjoyable and accessible reads. My writing style is minimalist. I try to use as few words as possible to convey the imagery or dialogue. I think writing is both a craft and an art. The craft can be taught and nurtured. Some great writers are able to rise above this to create art, something that is more than the sum of the parts. That’s the ultimate goal that all writers strive for, to create something special.
* My topics are driven by ideas that are generated by things I have thought about. The Face Transplant arose out of the thought “What would happen if you could transplant a face from one person to the next without any scars.” Most of my stories come from thinking about ideas. I then try to generate a story as the logical conclusion of thinking about this idea.
* I am a very opinionated writer with a strong sense of what I want to say. My characters or stories always have some large underlying theme that they illustrate. The downside of this morality is that my characters can be at times very conflicted but in the end choose the moral path. I’m unlikely to create a story of a flawed individual who doesn’t change throughout the story. The individual would have to come to some epiphany about life, have some insight into their behavior.
* I am a very optimistic writer. I believe in the best of individuals and the ability of all individuals to be better. In The Face Transplant, some of the characters involved in kidnapping Sarah Larsson are very evil. They are the exception that proves the rule. These characters don’t grow. Their depravity is limitless. I was surprised I created these characters, and it is not something I usually do. After I finished the story I was surprised at the evil in the kidnappers. I think they arose out of a need to counterbalance the goodness of Matthew and Sarah who sacrificed so much to help others.
* I have asked myself many times why do I write? I think in the end writers each have their own reasons for writing. I write because I have many different stories that I need to get out. It’s just that simple. A look into...

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?

* David Gelber, a New York native, is the seventh of nine sons and one of three to pursue medicine. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1980 and went on to graduate medical school in 1984 from the University of Rochester.
* He completed a residency in General Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, and Nassau County Medical Center on Long Island, NY, in 1989. Dr. Gelber now is in private practice in Houston, TX.
* Gelber has been performing surgery for more than 25 years, but over the last few years he began to pursue his passion for writing, initially with his debut novel, "Future Hope", followed by its sequel “Joshua and Aaron.”
* These were followed by two books about surgery “Behind the Mask” and “Under the Drapes.” The apocalyptic “Last Light” and historical fantasy “Minotaur Revisited” round out his published works, while numerous articles have appeared on his blog “Heard in the OR.”
* Now he presents “Little Bit’s Story” and his collection of magical medical short stories, “Night Clinic.”
* He has been married to Laura for 28 years and has three college aged children. He and Laura share their home with five dogs and numerous birds.

So, David Gelber, what/who inspired you to become a writer?
* No individual inspired me to become a writer. In my younger days I used to do a little writing, but college professors my freshman year worked overtime to discourage me from pursuing a writing career. I decided to take the easy way out and became a surgeon instead. Years passed and I kept having this idea for a character in a story. In 2006 I started my first book, “Future Hope: ITP Book One” which introduced the character, Joshua Smith, in an important supporting role. He took center stage in the sequel, “Joshua and Aaron: ITP Book Two,” and will continue to a central character in the concluding book to the ITP series, that is, if I can evere get my act together and finish writing it.

When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
* The first story I ever wrote was “The Rise and Fall of Poor Luck High School.” This was a satire on high school days which I wrote in my senior year. My teacher liked it and kept it. I don’t know where it ended up. This story was about twenty pages long, written long hand in 1976.

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
* Being the lazy person that I am, I have never really “sold” a story. My books are published by my own company, Ruffian Press, named after the greatest thoroughbred filly ever to live. I have had some of my surgical articles published on the web sites “KevinMD” and “Onsurg.”

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
* My wife told me to write about something I know about, which prompted me to write two books about surgery which sell fairly well online. I think her advice is both the best and worst I’ve had. This is mostly due to the fact that her words are the only advice anyone has ever given me on writing.

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series?
* “Night Clinic” is a series of short stories which build upon each other. It is best to read them in order, but each story does stand alone. There are plot lines that appear in various stories which is why it is best to read them in order.

What sparked the idea for the story/series?
* I had written an article, “Monsters and Heros,” for my blog “Heard in the OR,” which speculated on the medical problems a doctor might confront if his patient population included superheros, such as Spiderman or the Fantastic four, and Monsters, such as Frankenstein’s monster or the Blob. * After these two articles I had the idea for the “Night Clinic” stories which are set in a clinic in an unnamed city where regular patients are seen along with a steady stream of “different, unusual” patients.

Would you/have you own(ed) a snake or some other exotic pet?
* I have never owned a snake. The most exotic pet I’ve ever had is an Eclectus parrot, who still lives with me, Isaac. He talks a bit, sounds just like me.

Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
* Sunny warm weather, although I can’t stay out in the sun for very long because I burn very easily. In my younger days I was on vacation in Florida. Some of the other vacationers could not understand why I was wearing a long sleeve shirt on the beach. I had no choice because I burn so badly. But, I hate the cold.

If you could live anywhere in the universe, where would it be and why?
* Garden of Eden. No worries, only one rule, everything given to me without any expectation for anything in return except love.

If you were stranded on a desert island and were only allowed to have five modern conveniences with you, what would they be?
* Flush toilet and toilet paper; Generous supply of toothpaste and toothbrushes; Matches; A handbook of Practical Shipbuilding; Saw

* “Derek, we’ve got to stop meeting like this,” I scolded. “And think of the poor Tribbles. They’re supposed to be comforting, I know, but you’re just supposed to hold them.”
* “I do hold them, Dr. Barnes; for a little while. But, the way they coo and vibrate and shake, the possibilities are endless.”
* “I hope it’s as simple as last year,” I remarked.
* I put on a glove and lubed up my index finger and checked up in Derek’s rectum. Sure enough there was a furry object vibrating just inside. Past experience told me not to try to grab it with my hand; it would just slip away. I greased up the scope and passed it into his rectum. Immediately I visualized a furry yellow ball which was shaking and making low Tribble noises. I reached in with the tenaculum and grabbed the object in its mid portion like a pro and pulled scope and tenaculum out with a single, gentle pull. The Tribble, which was a toy available at the convention, popped out
* “Just one this year?” I asked, although I already knew there would be more.
* “No, three,” he replied.
* I repeated the routine, pulling out one purple and one red Trib¬ble, both larger that the first and still vibrating.
* “I’ll dispose of these for you, Derek. And, please, stay away from Tribbles. You know they’re nothing but trouble.”
* He gave a short grunt as I walked out of the exam room.
* “What’s next, Nurse?”

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Robert was born in London, United Kingdom. His early formative years were spent in Toronto Canada. Robert attended the University of Toronto Medical School. After obtaining his Doctor of Medicine degree he completed surgical training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Toronto and obtained certification from the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Robert Mounsey practices surgery in private practice in Toronto.
* R. Arundel studied Film Studies at Ryerson University, after this he began writing screenplays and novels. The Face Transplant is his debut novel.
* R. Arundel is married and lives in Toronto, Canada. When not writing or practicing surgery Robert can be found cycling.

What are you going to tell us about today?
* About balancing life and writing and my story The Face Transplant.
* I maintain a very busy schedule as a facial plastic surgeon. However, I do not have difficulty finding time to write. I have constant ideas around the project I am writing (I always have a project on the go) and new thoughts about concepts I would like to explore. I think everyone has the same challenges in a work/life balance. The stay at home mother with two young children has a far more hectic time than most people who complain that writing is too difficult or that their job keeps them from writing. If you have a need to write then you will find a way to write. This is very similar to my friends who are ardent runners. On a cold or rainy day when I will say it's a great day not to go out for a run, they will say it's a perfect day to run.
* I personally cannot write quality material or structure a story properly if I spend too long writing. After a certain amount of time the mind wanders and fatigue sets in. Having a marathon writing session may seem like you are accomplishing more, but in reality the quality will diminish. It is far preferable to write shorter bursts of stuff that later when you read it you are satisfied, than to write a hundred pages and then the next day you need to come back and re write the entire thing because the writing is far inferior.
* I have many diverse interests and other activities to give me a break from writing. Taking time away from writing to enjoy other activities benefits my writing I avoid forcing myself to write a certain amount each day. If the ideas flow, then I write. If not, I don't write. I think that my subconscious always is working on my book and when I have something to write, I'll write.

* The titanium canister slowly rose from the ground behind the glass door. When it finally stopped, two beeps were heard. Jason opened the glass door and took out the canister, a soft cold mist emanated from the canister. Maybe it was the temperature difference here, Matthew had never seen that when he brought up his canisters. The white mist slowly rose and then disappeared. Jason opened the titanium canister. As he had suspected, a red light began to flash. Matthew realized the canister had been altered. A signal was alerting someone that they had opened the canister.
* Jason, “Don’t worry, I anticipated this, the wall will not allow the signal to transmit, we’re safe.”
* Jason slowly removes the head from the canister. It is covered in what looks like a thin white cloth and wrapped precisely. Same technique used for all donor faces in the US. This face was harvested by Tom, no doubt about it. Slowly they unwrap the face.

How'd you/your muse come up with this story?
* This is Firefighter Jett Avery’s twin brother’s story. Whew that was a mouthful! LOL In Book 1, there is a bit of a competition between Jett and Cruz for Roxanne’s affection. In Book 2, we find out how Doctor Cruz Avery dealt with the rejection and finds a love of his own.

Describe the hero in five words.
* How about 2? Rico Suave! YUMMY! Okay, that was 3! LOL

Describe the heroine in five words.
* Strong, independent vibrant woman willing to take risks.

Who's your favorite character in the book & why?
* It has to be Dr. JJ Jones. She’s a gutsy woman who is doesn’t quite know what to make of her childhood crush now that he is aware of her as a woman.

What's your favorite line in the story?
* It is actually in my Excerpt below. Cruz points to himself in a mirror and thinks
* Who could resist this?
* My teenage son will point to himself and say, “How can you not love this?” And I thought (secret word #9: readers), that is exactly how my hero thinks! LOL

A look into the story
