What would you like to tell readers about yourself?

* A.J. Locke is originally from Trinidad & Tobago and currently resides in New York City. She knew early on that she wanted to be a writer, penned her first novel at fourteen, and hasn’t stopped since. She wanted to punish her sister for allowing him into the family and betraying her. Their father trusted Duke and had learned to love him as a son, so he willed Trenton House to Duke and Nana. Ruth was furious with her sister for allowing such a thing, saying she was betrayed, even though their father left her and her husband well over five hundred thousand dollars and the country house at the edge of town." He paused, sighing. "Most of the family believes her objection was solely about Duke’s name being put on the house. I think it’s safe to say if it had been just Nana’s name on the deed, Ruth wouldn’t have been so vehement about the whole thing."

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?

* p.m.terrell is the pen name for Patricia McClelland Terrell, a multi-award-winning, internationally acclaimed author of more than twenty books in five genres: contemporary suspense, historical suspense, romance, computer how-to and non-fiction.
* Prior to writing full-time, she founded two computer companies in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. Among her clients were the Central Intelligence Agency, United States Secret Service, U.S. Information Agency, and Department of Defense. Her specialties were in white collar computer crimes and computer intelligence, themes that have carried forward to her suspense.
* She is also the co-founder of The Book ‘Em Foundation, an organization committed to raising public awareness of the correlation between high crime rates and high illiteracy rates. She is the organizer and chairperson of Book ‘Em North Carolina, an annual event held in the real town of Lumberton, North Carolina, to raise funds to increase literacy and reduce crime. Today p.m.terrell will be talking about how she became a writer and what inspired her in regard to the story she's promoting.
The stories behind the writing...
* I knew I wanted to be a writer in the fourth grade when I won a poetry contest (which I’ll always believe was fixed) and I walked across the stage in the auditorium to accept my award—a book of poetry. My school principal encouraged me to write short stories and by the time I’d reached my teen years, I was writing manuscripts of 300 pages.
* When I was in the eighth grade, I won a state-wide writing contest. I’ve never been called “Pat” but for some reason, my teacher wrote that on the application and the judges assumed I was male. When they discovered that I was female, they rescinded the award and it went to the runner-up. It didn’t bother me that much but Miss Webb was livid.
* I continued writing but life often takes turns that we don’t expect, and I ended up in the computer industry shortly after the Apple computer was invented. (Yes, I am that old.) My writing soon took the form of programming code, technical manuals and occasional magazine articles for computer magazines. I started two computer companies and worked with the CIA, the Secret Service and the Department of Defense, to name a few. That work provided a lot of inspiration for future books.
* When I turned a certain age (you didn’t expect me to name the number, right?) I realized that I had always imagined myself being a published novelist by that point in my life. I began writing my first suspense in many years, titled Kickback, based on true trucking kickback schemes. I knew the subject inside and out because I’d been an FBI informant, passing information about the schemes. It took two years to write it and two more to sell it; during that time, I amassed enough rejection slips to wallpaper an entire house.
* A couple of years later, I retired from my computer businesses and began writing full-time. I find inspiration everywhere, and the toughest challenge for me is to decide which story to write. I began with suspense/thrillers that focused on computer technology (“techno-thrillers”) and which also involved domestic or international crime. Eventually, I began writing a series called Black Swamp Mysteries, about five people tied together through blood or circumstance: a CIA psychic spy, a CIA operative, a computer hacker who prefers the wrong side of the law, a political operative and a CIA section chief.
* I began writing about Ireland several years ago when I began researching my ancestors, who were Scot-Irish. I finally traveled to my ancestral home this past year and ironically, it was in almost the exact location where I pictured the castle in my latest book, A Thin Slice of Heaven—about fifty miles west of Belfast. I’ve been so inspired by Ireland and its rich history that I’m certain the country will play a large role in many of my future books. A look into...

* As the churning skies turned to the color of tar, Charleigh could discern the sources of the strange glow: they were torches held aloft by dozens of people. More were joining them, stragglers rushing from the village to catch up, while they began to spread apart in a more orderly column as they converged on the flat land they’d crossed on their way into the village. One man in the forefront stopped and began pointing and directing those that followed.

Today we have author KS “Kaz” Augustin visiting. Kaz says: I'm a Malaysian-born writer of SF&F, romance and combinations thereof, back here temporarily after living and working on a couple of other continents. I spend my time homeschooling our children, cooking and writing.

So, K.S. Augustin, What/who inspired you to become a writer?
* Stanley Weinbaum. I still vividly remember reading his short story, “A Martian Odysssey”. There was such logic, humour, wonder and humanity in it and I thought to myself, “Wow! I want to write like that!”

When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
* My English teachers must have been very indulgent, because I remember writing a few science-fiction stories at the tail-end of primary school and the first half of secondary school. They always got high marks and my first—a tale of alien invasion and how humans thwarted Their Nefarious Plans—was printed in our school annual. I'm sure all copies of that small and old publication have already mouldered into dust by now.

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
* Besides my school efforts? One.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
* The best piece of writing advice I've ever received was: read. I can't really pinpoint the worst because any particular piece has relevance within a certain context and you never know when that context might spring up.

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series?
* It's both! It's an omnibus, containing all five books of the Check Your Luck series. The books range in size from novella to short novels and the combined edition clocks in at 227,000 words.

What sparked the idea for the story/series?
* Coming back to Malaysia to live. My husband and I have lived and worked on four continents and we wanted our children to experience several world cultures before we settled down somewhere for the “formal” (read late secondary plus tertiary) part of their education. Once back here, I began to listen to people's stories and read about magic, witch doctors, curses, love potions and spells in the newspapers. That's how it all began—a slice of real life with a whole heap of paranormal thrown in!

Would you/have you own(ed) a snake or some other exotic pet?
* Oh yes. I like snakes. Their skin feels amazing. But hubby would freak out!

Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
* I live in the tropics at the moment and yearn for those crisp, sunny Australian winter days!

If you could live anywhere in the universe, where would it be and why?
* Assuming that the universe is infinite and that all possibilities eventually play out, combined with the fact that—in some aspects—quantum mechanics is indistinguishable from metaphysical phenomena, I would have to say my Number One choice would be Iain M Banks' Culture universe.

If you were stranded on a desert island and were only allowed to have five modern conveniences with you, what would they be?
* Air-conditioning unit, fully-stocked bar, jam-packed ereader, blazing-fast dual-screen Linux desktop system, and a stylish cabin to store it all in!

* “He won’t be much longer,” she said, as if commenting on the weather. “He’s been waiting to see you for more than a month now. We’re both glad you visited.”
* And I suddenly realised that nobody knew where I was. Long and his supernaturally strong wife could do whatever they wanted with me, dispose of my dead body no doubt in the acres of primeval jungle behind their house and nobody would be the wiser. A wave of energy suddenly thrummed beneath my feet, a surge so strong I was sure that Long’s wife was able to feel it pulse through my body and travel to hers at our menacing point of contact.

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?

* Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog today, C.R.! I’ve had over 100 stories and articles published in local and national magazines. My debut novel, a romantic suspense, was a NJRW GOLDEN LEAF WINNER FOR BEST FIRST BOOK OF 2012 and was nominated for RT Book Reviews 2012 Indie Press/Self-Published Contemporary Romance award. Since then, I’ve published four more books with even more on the way.

What book are you going to tell us about today? Is it part of a series? If so, what's the order the books should be read in?
* Sidelined Afterlife is the third book in my series Hauntings at Inner Harbor. The books are standalones, and can be read individually, or in order. Hereafter is the first book, Altered Frequency is the second.

How'd you/your muse come up with this story?
* The series is set in downtown Baltimore, close to where I live, and there are lots of stories about ghosts and hauntings in this area called Inner Harbor. So what better place to set a book about a haunted apartment building?
* The idea for Sidelined Afterlife had been simmering for while. After having a psychic reading, I really wanted to write about a heroine who was psychic. But, the twist is, she hates having her powers. I thought that would be a fun topic to play with.

Describe the hero in five words.
* Hunter is confident, loyal, hard-working, sexy and strong.

Describe the heroine in five words.
* Veronica is pensive, beautiful, caring, strong and driven.

Who's your favorite character in the book & why?
* Uggg! Tough to pick!! I guess I’d have to pick Hunter because he falls in love quickly, and fights hard to be with Veronica. He’s also very sexy and has a great sense of humor. I looove a man with a great sense of humor, don’t you? :)

What's your favorite line in the story?
* Like I said, I love a sense of humor, so this line cracks me up every time I read it. Veronica pushes Hunter out of the way of something the ghost throws at him…and it turns out only to be an orange.
* “I’m Hunter. What do you mean ‘one of those’?” Part of him wanted to risk another citrus attack so she would press against him again.

Welcome special guest: author Lisa Chalmers ( @LisaInk #paranormal #romance )

Today we have author Lisa Chalmers visiting. Lisa Chalmers is the author of If Tomorrow Never Comes and the upcoming paranormal romance, Dark Intent. She writes an eclectic mix, but has a special place in her heart for the paranormal and all things that go bump in the night.

So, Lisa Chalmers, what inspired you to become a writer?
* I think it was when I read Jude Deveraux’s book Remembrance and realized that not everyone had stories going in their head all the time. That was when I first started putting them down on paper.
(CR: I loved the book Remembrance! It was one of my favorites for a long time.)

When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
* When I was sixteen I tried to write my first ‘real’ story. I think it got to be about 60 or 70 pages before my floppy disc corrupted and I lost it. I still have parts of it somewhere.

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
* Before I published my first, I’d say over twenty stories of different lengths. They're still on the hard drive. There's a few of them I'll probably revise and release.

What genre(s) do you write in? What drew you to write in it/them? What’s your favorite genre of all to write in?
* This is going to be quite a list: paranormal romance, urban fantasy, paranormal ya, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, historical romance, women’s fic, young adult, new adult, and somewhere on the hard drive is the beginnings of a cozy mystery. My favorite genre is paranormal. I love the freedom of it, there’s a lot less rules to be bound by with storytelling. Basically whatever idea my muse comes up with, if I have enough of the idea to go with and I like it, I’ll write it. Hence the rather large list of genres.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
* Best: There are no right way or wrong ways to write, everyone has their own system that works for them.
* Worst advice, honestly I can’t remember.

How do you celebrate/deal with acceptance/rejection letters?
* Celebrate either with chocolate or Chinese food. Loud music is always a good way to deal with rejection. Also taking a good vacation away from the project then look at it later with fresh eyes.

In regard to the book you’re promoting, which actor and actress do you envision playing the roles of your hero and heroine? If there’s a villain or other characters who are pertinent to the story, who would play those parts?
* This is such a tough question. For Avery, I really can’t think of any actress off the top of my head. For Josh, Chris Hemsworth sort of has the look I always envisioned, and as for Gabriel I think I’d go with Donnie Wahlberg.

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series? If it’s part of a series, please list the order the books need to be read in for maximum reading enjoyment.
* IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES is a stand-alone story. I wrote the original draft about thirteen years ago so what sparked the original idea, can’t honestly remember.

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
* Right now it would be Rolo ice cream. So good! Also love black forest cake ice cream but haven't seen it in a long time.

Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
* Sun & warm, have enough of the cold weather.

Are you a morning person or night owl?
* Definitely a night owl. Tend to do most of my writing after midnight, especially when I’m really into a story.

IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES is my debut release. It’s a paranormal romance, but it’s not exactly a typical romance. I tend to think of it as a bit of ‘Ghost’ meets ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’.
