* My heroes are the men and women who work to serve our country through all the branches of the military. My hubby, who served in the National Guard part time and the Army full time, is one of my real life heroes, as are my sister and best friend, two wonderful women who served in the National Guard and Army respectively as well.
* When it comes to military fictional heroes, two authors come to mind: Kaylea Cross and Beth D. Carter. Kaylea writes awesome militarty centered romances that have a lot of action and heat. As for Beth, though she doesn't write military specific stories, she does have a Motorcycle Club series and in those stories to be a member of the club you have to have served in one of the military branches. The first two books in the Forgotten Rebels MC series are Unbroken and Wicked Man, and I'm really looking forward to the next two stories she's working on in the series because they sound wonderful! If you haven't read either of these authors yet, you must!

First, some questions, answers and rules we need to get out of the way. Important. Please read.
As a hopper, what can I expect?
* Each author will be posting a giveaway and gardening tip or recipe or both! It’s a spring celebration designed to introduce you to authors and give you a chance to win prizes. Now for some fun stuff! * Gardening. It's a tricky thing for me. I've never had much of a green thumb, but I keep trying to get gardens going--flowers, veggies, herbs, trees... I had trouble with it all when I lived in TX--hot, dry and sunny there. Didn't have the space to do anything in NJ when I lived there. Now I'm in the hot, sunny southwest. I attempted a container garden last spring. For a while there we had bell peppers, Anaheim chilies, jalapenos, tomatoes. I even had cilantro, basil and oregano as well. It was great for making salads and ingredients for my sauces. But, alas, I had my garden in a bad location and the sun and heat got the better of them all.
* A friend of mine had given me a stem cutting from her Wandering Jew (Tradescantia fluminensis). Yes, she knows the "color of my thumb" but told me they're hard to kill. Well... For a while I believed it had gone the way of my other plants, but today we were outside doing yard work, which is where I kept the WJ since we have a cat and I didn't want him messing with it, and low and behold, there was life! I freed it from the dead bits in the planter and the purple leaves now can get some sun, and hopefully, continue to thrive. To say the least, I'm amazed my "thumb" didn't get the better of it.
* The tips I've learned from my experience... Don't leave planters on the patio concrete, especially when it gets hot. Water. Like us, plants need it, too. Duh, right? The Wandering Jew needs some sun but also needs shade. Probably why it's thriving now since I'd moved it last year, where it could get water from a sprinkler and shade from a tree.
* I've cleaned out a section on the side of our house where it gets some morning sun, afternoon shade and has drip irrigation available. I plan to try my veggies there, along with some herbs, this year. There's another spot that we're hoping to clear soon where we'll grow hops and flowers. Then there are the trellises we're looking to put up for climbing vines to create a privacy fence of sorts.
* If it all works out, perhaps next year I'll have some pictures to post for the hop. Fingers crossed!

* Several years ago, I found the following story, quote and list on line. The author of the story, as far as I know, is unknown. I checked around the internet to see if I could track down a name and had no luck. Now, I know there are some discrepancies in the story, so please don’t comment on that. I’m sharing this because of the overall message the story, quote and list delivers—we should be appreciative of those in our lives, value the time we have between us and thank each other for being a part of our travels in this world before time runs out.

* A young man learns what's most important in life from the guy next door.
* It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, girls, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
* Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
* "Jack, did you hear me?"
* "Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.
* "Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it," Mom told him.
* "I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.
* "You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life," she said.
* "He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important...Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.
* As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown.
* Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
* The night before he had to return h ome, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time.
* Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture... Jack stopped suddenly.
* "What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.
* "The box is gone," he said.
* "What box?" Mom asked.
* "There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said.
* It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box . He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
* "Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said. "I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom."
* It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days," the note read.
* Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention. "Mr. Harold Belser" it read. Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside. "Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life" A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, as tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.
* Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover.
* Inside he found these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! -Harold Belser."
* "The thing he valued most was...my time"
* Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days. "Why?" Janet, his assistant asked.
* "I need some time to spend with my son," he said. "Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!"

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away."

Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's 100% true.
1. At least 2 people in this world love you so much they would die for you.
2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.
3. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.
4. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.
5. You mean the world to someone.
6. If not for you, someone may not be living.
7. You are special and unique.
8. When you think you have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won't get it, but if you trust God to do what's best, and wait on His time, sooner or later, you will get it or something better.
9. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good can still come from it.
10. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back on the world.
11. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.
12. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.
13. Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know and you'll both be happy.
14. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are great.

It's hard for me to pick one scary book or movie since I've read and seen so many, so I'll just share some memories... Babysitting. I have to say, that's not a good time to watch horror movies and I did so more than once. One time I watched When a Stranger Calls (1979). Good one, right? Another time when neighbors were moving from one house in the township to another, I was over to watch the kids and on the television was Damien: Omen II (1978). It was October. The front door was open and that talking crow totally wigged me out. Both instances happened before the age 13, but it didn't deter me from my love of scary films and books. :)

* Hangovers aren’t fun. I’ve experienced my share of them. Back in college, and for several years after, when I used to drink...
a lot
...I used to eat an apple and drink a Pepsi the morning after a hard night. As I grew older, my ‘next morning meal’ changed into a greasy kind of breakfast… Now that I think of it, that’s probably why we’d hit a diner in the wee hours of the morning after going to the clubs or a party… Then as I progressed in age some more, I’d started taking an aspirin or something of the sort with a huge glass of water before I went to bed, which eventually changed to drinking a glass of water for each alcoholic beverage I consumed in my attempts to beat having a hangover.
* Nowadays, I rarely drink, for a number of reasons, which of course is the best way to deal with a hangover – by not having one! LOL! The only kinds of hangovers I like anymore are the ones I experience after a long, hard, intense (get your mind out of the gutter…) writing session where it takes me some time to recover.
* And usually that’s what one has to do when confronted with a hangover, get plenty of rest and give your body time.
* What to do while recouping? Well, as an author, I say read a good book! It’s one of the reasons why I’m offering the prize that I mentioned. ;) Looking for suggestions on who to read? ......I did some poking around on the net to find out about the history of Valentine's Day and stumbled across this interesting tidbit at History.com: "Origins of Valentine's Day: A Pagan Festival in February ~ While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.
......"To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. The city's bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage."

Well, it’s almost the "official" end of summer. Why do I have the word official in quotes? Cause where I live I’ll still be able to enjoy summer like weather and wear shorts until the end of October and into November if the temps hold out. That’s the one nice thing about living in the southwest, being able to experience nice weather almost year round. Granted, June, July and August can be unbearable at times when it comes to 110+ degrees of heat, but the rest of the year makes up for it. Plus, I’d rather be in the heat than the cold. Yeah, I’m strange that way. ;) Viva Las Vegas!
