Steve McHugh & 'Lies Ripped Open' @StevejMchugh @GoddessFish #Adventure #Fantasy

Today we have author Steve McHugh visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Steve’s been writing from an early age, his first completed story was done in an English lesson. Unfortunately, after the teacher read it, he had to have a chat with the head of the year about the violent content and bad language. The follow up ‘One boy and his frog’ was less concerning to his teachers and got him an A.
* It wasn’t for another decade that he would start work on a full-length novel that was publishable, the results of which was the action-packed Urban Fantasy, Crimes Against Magic.
* Steve McHugh lives in Southampton on the south coast of England with his wife and three young daughters. When not writing or spending time with his kids, he enjoys watching movies, reading books and comics, and playing video games.

Today Steve McHugh will be talking about how he became a writer and what inspired him in regard to the story he's promoting.
* Before I was about 13, I didn’t want to write, I probably wanted to be a ninja or astronaut or something else that was as exciting to a 10 year old boy. A ninja astronaut possibly, if such a thing exists, and if it doesn’t, it really should because that would be awesome.
* Anyway, I was probably 11 when I was given Treasure Island to read, along with a bunch of Sherlock Holmes stories and some others I can barely remember. The Sherlock ones stuck out the most in my mind, they were the ones that made me go to the library in search of others to read. At some point in the local library, I moved from there into the realm of the choose your own adventure books.
* I devoured these like a ravenous beast, always hungry for more and never really satisfied that I’d read enough, right up until I was 13 and my English teacher told me to branch out, to read something more challenging, more diverse. I took him at his challenge and went to the library again (something I’d find myself doing more and more over the years), and picked up Terry Pratchett and David Gemmell. They were soon joined by Stephen King and countless others, and that was it. I wanted to be a writer.
* When it came to writing out my school report about what we wanted to do when leaving, I wrote author and was told by my teacher to write something more realistic, something more… well, boring to be honest. I choose accountant. I have never been an accountant.
* That’s not to say I went straight from age 16 and leaving school to become an author. It took me 9 years, until I was 25 and about to become a father for the first time, when I finally decided to get serious about it. It took another 8 years before I’d get published, the majority of that time just learning my craft and trying not to suck at something I’d fallen in love with.
* Since that day in April 2012, I’ve become a best selling author with five published books, the most recent of which is Lies Ripped Open. And frankly it’s been an incredible 3 ½ years.
* Lies Ripped Open is the accumulation of the previous four books worth of story and questions. It answers a lot of those questions, and asks several of it’s own, but it’s a story I knew I was looking forward to writing from the first word of book one, Crimes Against Magic.
* I can tell you wholeheartedly that writing is the greatest job I’ve ever had, or could ever imagine doing, the fact that I get to tell stories for people to read and enjoy is something I will never ever get tired of. And long may that continue.

Looking at character Taryn Rose Galendrin from 'The Temple of Ardyn' @TameriEtherton #Epic #Fantasy

Today we have Taryn Rose Galendrin visiting from all the books in the series The Song of the Swords. Welcome!

Taryn Rose Galendrin, what would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Well, that’s kind of difficult to answer. I thought I was from Earth, but recently discovered I was born on another planet, one far from Earth and vastly different in almost every way. It’s beautiful and dangerous and shimmering with an ancient power.

Are you happy with the way people perceive you?
* Yes and no. People on Aelinae fear me because they’ve been told I’ll destroy their world, but what they don’t understand is I’m trying to protect them. I’ll admit, I don’t make a habit of announcing my intentions. A little fear goes a long way when sussing out your enemies.

Is humor important? Why or why not?
* If I couldn’t laugh at myself, or some of the ridiculous situations I find myself, I’d probably lose my mind. Have you met my family? They seriously need counseling.

If you were taken out of the story and placed into your author’s world, what would be the first thing you’d do?
* I’d get a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake. Or maybe some proper fish and chips. Oh! Pizza. Yes, I’d have a pizza with the works.

If you could pull your author into your world, what do you think would happen to them?
* Tameri on Aelinae? Ha! I’d spend all my time keeping her out of mischief. She’d be enthralled with every little thing. And we’d definitely have to keep an eye on the crown jewels. That woman has a thing for tiaras. One look at my star crown and she’d be a goner.

If you could time travel and/or live anywhere in the world, where would you go and/or where would that be?
* A year ago I would’ve said I’d time travel back to the day before my grandfather died, but now? Now I don’t want to be anywhere or in any other time than where I am. My life is difficult, but has purpose. Plus, there’s Rhoane to consider. That man wouldn’t know what to do with himself if I weren’t here. I tend to make his life interesting. Not always in a good way, but that’s what keeps it fun, you know?

Now for some author information!
* My author is Tameri Etherton. Rocker of sparkly tiaras, friend of dragons, and lover of all things sexy, Tameri Etherton leaves a trail of glitter in her wake as she creates and conquers new worlds and the villains who inhabit them. When not masquerading as a mom and writer, rumor has it she travels to far off places, drinking tea and finding inspiration for her kickass heroines—and the rogues who steal their hearts—with her own Prince Charming by her side.

It’s hard to save a world when your family is out to kill you…
* Taryn banished the phantom, but someone, or something, is invading her thoughts. To escape the torture and bring balance to Aelinae, Taryn must do the one thing she fears most—unlock her Dark powers.
* Rhoane swore an oath to protect Taryn, forsaking all others to keep her from harm, yet her independent spirit and lack of trust almost cost her life. Now, he’ll do what it takes to save the woman he loves from the Blackness growing inside her.
* But there’s evil in this world, and it’s just as desperate for them to fail.
(Author note: The Temple of Ardyn is the second book in the Song of the Swords epic fantasy series about honor, family, and love—of what it takes to become someone you never thought you’d be and to find the strength to face your inner demons.)
~ Excerpt ~
* “You have not been dismissed.” Lliandra stood to block Taryn’s path and the two women glared at each other in a stalemate. Lliandra’s power swirled with a constrained vengeance, slipping around Taryn’s body.
* She waited until her mother’s Mari wrapped her fully and a look of triumph clouded her mother’s eyes. The blue threads tightened about her, clammy and smelling of rot. Taryn blew gently on the strands and they crumpled into blackened snarls and fell to the floor.
* Lliandra gasped in horror at the sight of her power, visible and defeated at her feet. “How?” She choked. “How is this possible?”
* “You told me yourself, I am the Eirielle. Within me is the trinity of power, but that’s not all I possess. The phantom touched my soul with his Black ShantiMari. Perhaps if you were young and robust, your skills would be enough to overpower me, but your fade weakens you, Mother.”
* She scooped up the pile of ash and blew it into the air, where it became glittering motes of dust. “You really should control your anger. It isn’t becoming for an empress to be so disrespectful of her gifts.” With that, she pivoted on her heel and strode across the sitting room. When she reached the wall of crystal, she stopped.
* Lliandra stood in the doorway of the dining room, eyes wide with disbelief.
* “Never again use your ShantiMari against me. Are we agreed?” Lliandra gave the slightest of nods and Taryn swept from the rooms, her legs trembling beneath her full skirt.
* Her mother also had highly underestimated her.

A Look At D.D. Miers & 'Dark Summoner' @AuthorDDMiers @GoddessFish #Dark Fantasy #Romance

Today we have author D.D. Miers visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* With her debut novel Dark Summoner, D.D. Miers begins the Relic Keeper Series, a fast-paced romantic saga filled with danger, destiny, and magic, set in her favorite genre, Paranormal and Fantasy Romance.
* Born with a wildly overactive imagination, she’s told stories of enchanted worlds, treacherous villains, and epic love for as long as she can remember. She keeps a watchful eye for the paranormal hiding around every corner and constantly checks the window or rearview mirror for a vampire or fairy.
* Although she has a fondness for all things fantasy, she's an epic romance fan at heart and in everything she asks, “What would Jane Austen do?” The journey to becoming a published author has been a long but exciting one. A fervent desire for taking readers from the ordinary to the extraordinary keeps her motivated, and she believes that everything is better with a good helping of romance thrown in.
* D.D. is a proud member of the Romance Writers of America (RWA) and the Fantasy, Futuristic, & Paranormal Sub-Genre of RWA (FF&P). She continues to attend conferences and writers’ workshops in order to help inspire, share, and promote her love for romance.
* During her downtime, she loves to spend time with her family, share her obsession of all things romance with other fans, and catch up on her never-ending TBR list. She resides in beautiful Southern California with her wonderful husband, an adorable toddler, two kitties, and the many different characters living in her head.

What are you going to tell us about today?
* My Horror, Dark Fantasy, Romance story: Dark Summoner.
A look into the story
~ Blurb ~
* "Looking at him made me desirous for things I never thought I would want."
* Abby Davenport has spent the last ten years forgetting her past until a fateful night reveals her false reality. Thrust into a new world of dark sorcery and ancient magic, she's shocked to discover her destiny lies as the keeper of a powerful relic. Now everyone wants to control, own, or destroy her. No longer able to discern truth from lie, she’s torn between a charming guardian and a mysterious summoner. Abby finds herself strangely drawn to each man—one sworn to protect and one who calls to her soul. Can she survive the strange and dangerous labyrinth of the first realm, where every move, emotion, and reaction must be a calculated one?
~ Excerpt ~
* His index finger tapped methodically against his glass as watched me. “Everything in good time.”
* “Sounds like I’m more of a prisoner than a guest.”
* “I don’t take prisoners, Ms. Davenport. They’re a waste of my time.”
* I tried to think of anything I could to hang over his head. “I doubt the Council would appreciate the way you’re treating me.”
* His face was suddenly very dark. “The Council is only concerned with their continued reign over the realm. They only need you alive and doing as they say. Your comfort, your happiness, is irrelevant to them.”
* Doubt crept through my mind. Was that true? God, I hoped not.
* “You know what? I’m done talking to you. I want to go. Now.” I stood up from my chair. “So send me to the dungeon or wherever the hell you plan on keeping me. But send me now.” At this point, I’d take anywhere except being near him. I had too many conflicting emotions, especially when he was around.
* Laughter rumbled through his chest. “You are in no position to be making demands.”
* “And you are an asshole.”
* He looked mildly entertained by my outburst, the corners of his mouth lifted into a wicked smile, but something in his eyes held a new respect. His gaze shifted from my eyes to my lips, leisurely traveling up and down my body.

Welcome special guest: author Linda K. Hopkins ~ @GoddessFish #Fantasy #historical

Today we have author Linda K. Hopkins visiting.
* Linda K. Hopkins was born in South Africa, and grew up in Johannesburg. She left South Africa in her mid-twenties, and after spending a few years in England, finally settled in Calgary, Canada, where she lives with her husband and twin daughters.
* When she's not writing, she's usually reading (a great pastime when you are trapped in a snowbound landscape eight months of the year!), tinkering on the piano or just living life!

So, Linda K. Hopkins, what/who inspired you to become a writer?
* It was my mother who first encouraged me to write, and before writing my first novel, I spent many years writing for newsletters as well as business documents. However, my love of stories and storytelling came from the multitude of books I have read from the time I could first read.

When did you attempt your first story? What length was it? What's become of it?
* Although I have spent my life dreaming up stories, it was only recently that I wrote one down. This full length manuscript (100 000 words) has been temporarily put aside, but I plan to come back to it at some stage, and eventually publish it.

How many stories did you complete before you sold your first?
* One

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
* The best writing advice I received was to write something you want to read. The worst - you can do your own self-editing.

The book you’re promoting, is it a stand-alone story or part of a series?
* Bound by a Dragon is the first book in a series. The second book will be available early 2015, so be sure to sign up for updates!

What sparked the idea for the story/series?
* I love fantasy and the supernatural, as well as the potential in romance. The idea for the story was actually born in a daydream, and started off as a short story that just grew!

*** Now for some fun info… ***
Would you/have you own(ed) a snake or some other exotic pet?
* The most exotic pet I have ever owned is a budgie!

Which do you prefer: rain or sun & warm weather or cold weather?
* Sunshine and warm weather

If you could live anywhere in the universe, where would it be and why?
* I would live right here on Earth - there is so much to see and experience, a lifetime is not long enough to do it all!

If you were stranded on a desert island and were only allowed to have five modern conveniences with you, what would they be?
* Laptop; Coffee machine; Flashlight; Hot, running water; Duvet (is that a modern convenience?)

*** About Linda K. Hopkins’ book/series… ***

~ Blurb ~
The dragon turned its head and seemed to look straight at Keira. Pulling her arm out of her sister’s, she drew herself upright and stared straight back, meeting the golden eye of the dragon before it turned its enormous body in a slow, fluid motion and lazily flew towards the mountains.
* A dragon has moved into the neighborhood of Keira's small, medieval village, unsettling the residents as they fear for their safety. All except Keira, who is fascinated by the creature, both dangerous and beautiful. But when Aaron Drake decides to take up residence in his ancestral home of Storbrook Castle, set deep in the nearby mountains, Keira finds herself unsettled by the handsome stranger. Why did he decide to move to Storbrook, almost eighty years after it was last inhabited, and does the dragon really live in the caves below the castle?
~ Excerpt ~
* As she watched the mighty beast before her, the dragon bent its neck into a graceful arch downward, bringing its face closer to Keira’s eye level, its golden cat-like eyes watching her intently. Keira quelled the desire to step back, instead keeping her feet firmly planted as she continued to gaze at the dragon.
* “Why did you take me?” she finally asked, shuddering at the thought of what might have been. She lifted her hand to her cheek, feeling the sting of scratches scored down her face. A flash of sharp teeth made her draw in her breath as the dragon replied with a growl.
* “I’m sorry Keira,” it said. “I should have been there sooner. When I think of what that boy was about to do …” The dragon stopped and pulled in a breath. “I shouldn’t have left him alive!”
* Keira trembled at the thought. “But why?” she said. “What does it matter to you?”
* The dragon stared at her for a long moment, until finally it breathed out a sigh, sending sparks flaring from its nostrils. “Come closer, Keira,” it said.
* Keira hesitated, wondering what the dragon intended to do with her.
* “I’m not going to hurt you,” the dragon said.
* She looked at the mighty beast before her and suppressed a shudder. Its claws rested on the ground, razor-sharp and menacing. She could see its pointed teeth and knew that it could rip her to shreds in an instant, or burn her to a crisp with one hot breath. One swipe of its massive tail could send her flying through the air, or leave her broken on the ground. Keira knew that the dragon could wield mighty power with barely any effort, striking fear into the hearts of many brave men. But as she looked at the dragon, gazing into eyes that blazed like the fire it breathed, she felt her fears slowly melt away.
