Genevieve Gannon & 'Chasing Chris Campbell' @gen_gannon @GoddessFish #RomCom

Today we have author Genevieve Gannon visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* Genevieve Gannon is a Melbourne-based journalist and author. She wrote stories for music and fashion street press magazines while at university before moving to Canberra to do a journalism cadetship.
* In 2011 she joined the national news wire, Australian Associated Press, where she covered crime, politics and entertainment. Her work has appeared in most major Australian newspapers including The Age, The Australian and The Daily Telegraph.
* She currently lives in Melbourne where she is a court reporter. At night she writes romantic comedies.

Today Genevieve Gannon will be talking about how the process of publishing is terrifying.
* The process of creating a book is riddled with anxiety. Plot holes keep you up at night. The fear of rejection is constant. When I signed a contract to have two manuscripts turned into ebooks I thought the stress would subside. But as the launch date drew near I found myself having nightmares. The reason? Reviews.
* A recurring bad dream involves me being pulled into a small room for a review by a Melbourne newspaper (delivered orally because of dream logic). The timid woman, dressed like a high school examiner, is nervous and doesn’t want to tell me the outcome.
* “What is it?” I ask. “Is it bad? Is it two stars? They gave me two stars didn’t they? One star? Don’t tell me it’s only one.”
* The woman wraps her grey cardigan around herself and says, without meeting my eyes: “They didn’t give you any stars. They gave you a possum in the gutter.”
* “A possum in the gutter?”
* She nods grimly, eyes on the floor.
* This doesn’t make sense. But it can’t be good.
* Ebooks rarely receive newspaper reviews. This nightmare of a newspaper paying any sort of attention to my work is far more than I can hope for. But it’s precisely because newspapers won’t pay attention that I’m nervous. Any reviews the book garners will come from the internet. The amorphous, grumpy, indignant, unrestrained internet.
* To be clear, I’m not talking about bloggers. My ebooks are chick-lit and I’m yet to find a blogger in this genre who isn’t passionate and fair. I’m talking about customer reviews.
* If you’re a debut author looking to introduce a little terror into your life, scroll through the reviews on a site like GoodReads or Amazon. Whatever excitement you’re feeling about your forthcoming book will vanish faster than dignity at buck’s party. The reviewers on these websites are savage. If they do not like your book, they will hack it to pieces. Customer reviews can at times be akin to the comments section in a news article: “Crap!” readers blast in a single-word response. Then they go to the kitchen to make some ice-tea, oblivious to the eager, hopeful author scanning their Amazon book page to feedback.
* I recently read a book by a woman whose work I admire and adore and hurried to GoodReads to assign it some stars. I gave it a score of four out of five. (I reserve fives for books so compelling they force me to retreat from life until I’ve finished reading.) This book was not a five, but I thought it was funny and heart-warming and clever.
* The internet disagreed. One reviewer labelled it a “sour, muddled defensive screed against anyone who has pissed the author off in the last thirty years”. Another described it as “insecure ramblings … sugar-coated by weak, insecure meta-analysis”.
* Of course they weren’t all like this. But as a first-time author the prospect of one such review is terrifying. Particularly when you consider the critical napalm rained down on authors like Elizabeth Gilbert. As her most popular book is a memoir, her reviews are troublingly personal.
* “Get over yourself you juvenile dimwit,” one reader hissed.
* Another describes the book, East Pray Love, as “the monologue of neurotic American princess Liz” and suggests it “should have been printed on softer paper (about 3 ply would do it)”.
* It’s true that Gilbert’s supernova star power is likely to attract significantly more criticism (good and bad) than other writers. But even the most obscure of us are not immune to the anger of the internet.
* I once wrote an article the Sydney Morning Herald published online about cheaters’ website Ashley Madison. The piece opened with a line about how my future husband’s wedding ring would be soldered to his finger, to prevent infidelity. The internet did not get the joke. It did not like what I was implying and it let me know in no uncertain terms. The comments section was peppered with judgments and pointed personal comments.
* The internet, I learned firsthand, has no restraint. It insulted me and made insinuations about me because I’d written an article. I knew about trolling, of course, but hearing about something and feeling a wave of snide outrage crash into you are two quite different things. And at least with the article I could comfort myself that it wasn’t me they were reacting to but the subject I had written about.
* This is not so for a work of fiction. From the first keystroke of your novel to the final full-stop, every moment is one you created.
* About three weeks from P-day (publication day) I was on GoodReads doing research for this post. I was feeling grim.
* HarperCollins had just told me my ebook was up on NetGalley and reviews would soon start flowing through.
* Was my humble novel going to be eviscerated? Worse, would anonymous reviewers start making inferences about me because of what I told my characters to do?
* I clicked through to my GoodReads author page where a handful of users had started to add my book to their virtual shelves. There was something new. Four little yellow stars lit up next to my work. I sat up straight, surprised. Somebody had read my story, and they had liked it. My anxiety drained away. I had been so worked up about the bad reviews I’d forgotten that there was every chance I would receive good reviews. I remembered how much pleasure I’d had from the book I’d recently given four stars on GoodReads and realised someone else felt the same way about my story. I thought about this anonymous reviewer laughing at my characters, and perhaps nodding along as they recognised feelings and situations from their own lives. A warm feeling filled my chest and I remembered why I had started writing in the first place.
* I realised even though I would have to take the bad with the good, when it comes to reviews, the good is wonderful.

A Look At Tara Andrews & 'Her Everything' @tara_andrews1 @decadentpub #1NS #1NightStand #erotic #romance

Today we have author Tara Andrews visiting. Welcome!

What would you like to tell readers about yourself?
* I live in New York, less than an hour away from Manhattan. My husband and I have been married for 14 years and we have two children ages nine and six. During the day I manage a billing office, though my dream job is to write full time. It’s what I love. I’m also an avid reader and skilled procrastinator.

What book are you going to tell us about today? Is it part of a series? If so, what's the order the books should be read in?
* My latest release is Her Everything and its part of Decadent Publishing’s 1Night Stand series. If you’re not familiar, the series is a collection of short stories by various authors and written for a variety of genres. There’s something for everyone. 1Night Stand is the name of the agency run by Madame Eve, who is a central figure in all the books. The characters engage the agency for various reasons with the expectation of a one night stand. However, Madame Eve’s goal is to provide her clients with a happy ending beyond a single night.
* While there are some sub-series within 1Night Stand, my book is a stand-alone.

How'd you/your muse come up with this story?
* I was watching a documentary on VH1 about The Pussycat Dolls and the idea seemed to bloom from there. At first I thought the main character would be the lead of the girl group, but as much as stars are fascinating, I always wonder how it’d feel to be within their orbit. The idea that my lead character, Rachel, was the sister to the band’s lead singer formed and quickly after I discovered they were twins.

Describe the hero in five words.
* Sexy, confident, talented, caring, gorgeous

Describe the heroine in five words.
* Loyal, beautiful, responsible, shy, bold (when needed)

Who's your favorite character in the book & why?
* As much as I love Mark, I’d have to say it was especially fun to write about the relationship between Rachel and her twin sister, Sasha. I have two sisters and a brother; I found writing the sibling scenes to be a lot of fun. Their teasing, the I-got-your-back moments, and even at the end when Rachel was kind of mad at her sister, all of it I enjoyed writing and came pretty naturally. Also, I was the oldest and always thought of myself as the more responsible one – which Rachel finds herself to be as well. So I would say that Rachel edges about Mark just a bit because I identify with her more.

What's your favorite line in the story?
* Oh, that’s a tough one (and I think this may change depending on my mood!). But right now:
* “I don’t need protecting, Rachel. I need you.”

A look into the story
~ Blurb ~
* Rachel Turner made a mistake—a couple, in fact. Ruining a surprise meeting with the front man to her favorite band is just the beginning. But agreeing to switch places with her famous sister may spell the end of both of their careers. With rumors flying and an unexpected invitation from Madame Eve, Rachel hopes she can put the mistakes behind her.
* Attending an event to support a charity close to his heart, Mark Travis wasn’t looking for love, or even company—and definitely not with a fan. But when he puts in a hasty bid at a silent auction and wins the services of 1Night Stand, Madame Eve has something different in mind. A single evening with a woman she claims can fulfill his needs. But one night might not be enough.
* Come morning, will Mark and Rachel’s unexpected one-night stand give them more than they bargained for?
~ Excerpt ~
* His hold on her shifted, bringing them closer, the difference slight, but welcome. The nerves at her waist sizzled under the weight of his palm, while his thumb rubbed the exposed skin of her back. She shivered again from the simple touch, and an answering heat flared in his eyes.
* “I…I got called away to help my sister.” She stumbled on the near lie. But, truth be told, she never dreamed Mark would give her a second thought after she’d left, his disinterest so plain to see.
* “Sasha?”
* So he knew who she was then? “Yes, she’s my sister.”
* “Your twin.”
* Rachel allowed him to spin her before replying. “That’s correct.”
* “I didn’t realize at first. The glasses threw me off, as did your hair.” He smiled then. “Even so, you two are not identical.”
* Aside from her and Sasha’s obvious style differences and voices, very few people were able to tell them apart. A knot formed in Rachel’s throat. She didn’t like where his comment appeared to be leading or the way his movements slowed and his brow furrowed.
* He met her eyes. “Was that you on stage tonight?”

Trouble's coming ~ Hump Day H00k ( #HDH @decadentpub #1NS #1NightStand )

Hi all! Wow. Another week's come and gone, and we're back to Hump Day Hook where authors share snippets from their stories. :)
* Today's hook comes from my soon to be released 1NightStand story, Sunset Temptations.

* “And the money?”
* Silence rolled thick from the other seat. Her instincts screamed trouble.
* “Kiran?”
* He cleared his throat. “Well….”
* She’d seen and heard this nervousness from him before. That time he’d gotten into a little trouble with some bad dudes. Could he have done so again? She shot a quick glance at him. His skin seemed on the pale side. Her sixth sense dinged. “Oh no. You didn’t.”

Hump Day H00k ~ Looking at Sunsets #HDH for Mar. 13

Hi all! Wow. Another week's come and gone, and we're back to Hump Day Hook where authors share snippets from their stories. :)
I'm currently doing edits on my third 1NightStand story, Sunset Temptations, so I thought I'd share a bit from my first installment. The following comes from Sunset Desires book 1 of my Sunset series for Decadent Publishing's 1NS series. Enjoy!

* Gwen shook her head. “No. Just a little nervous is all.” To calm down she sucked in a humid stream of air, bringing with it the heady scents of sand, sun, and surf mixed with the aromas of bar food and beer. Though the sun dipped toward the horizon, the heat still stuck around. The warmth didn’t bother her, but her anxiety about the upcoming situation did. Heather had asked some pretty personal questions. At the time, she’d figured her cousin had grown lonely—too much work, not enough socializing, and probably wanted a better connection with family, a friend. But now…. Despite the high temperature, a chill racked her body. “Oh my God, that fantasy question. You told a total stranger about my fantasy?” Her high-pitched squeal rose above the clamor of the bar.

Hump Day H00k #HDH for Mar. 6th

Hi all! Another week's come and gone, and we're back to Hump Day Hook where authors share snippets from their stories. :)
Over the past couple of weeks I'd been sharing some of the conflict between Cassie and Dakota. This week I'm taking you back to the beginning where Cassie is thinking about Dak and about to meet him. She sees a ranch hand and has a bit of a daydream. The following snippet comes from Wild West Weekend book 1 of the Double D Ranch Tales series. Enjoy!

* Desire coiled low in her stomach, bunched into a tight ball. She purred quietly to herself. Maybe she’d see about a weekend fling with the ranch hand. A bit of a scratch for my little itch. And wouldn’t it be nice if the ranch hand was actually Dakota? A soft snicker followed the purr.

Hump Day H00k #HDH for Feb. 27th

The following snippet comes from Wild West Weekend book 1 of the Double D Ranch Tales series. Enjoy!

* Enjoying the mountain desert scenery of the ranch, she trailed her hand beneath the cloth around her neck, found the delicate silver chain her best friend, Bristol, had given her one Christmas and pulled it out of her shirt. She fingered the chain down to a ring looped on it and touched the piece of jewelry. A soft smile played at her lips. The boy who had lived on the ranch and given her the ring was probably married with children by now. It’d be too bad. From what she remembered, Dakota was a good looking guy. The one who got away.

Hump Day H00k #HDH for Feb. 20th

Hi all! Another week's come and gone, and we're back to Hump Day Hook where authors share snippets from their stories. :)
Over the past couple of weeks I'd been giving you a peek into a work in progress tentatively titled Wild West Island Getaway and sharing some of the conflict between Cassie and Dakota. This week I'm taking you back to the beginning where Cassie and Dak rekindle an old relationship, except this time it's a bit tumultuous. Even though they have feelings for each other they keep butting heads. The following snippet comes from Wild West Weekend book 1 of the Double D Ranch Tales series. Yes, I know this is more than a paragraph, but I wanted to give a good representation of the tension between the characters. Enjoy!

* “Kent has a job to do. He can’t stick around here.”
* “Well then, either find someone else or deal with the fact that I’ll be alone for a bit.”
* “Why are you being so obstinate?” He blinked. The heat in his eyes left. He glared at her with a narrow-eyed gaze.
* “Why are you being so paternal?” She reciprocated with a scowl of her own.
* With another scathing glare at her, he yanked open the door. “Maybe because now that you’re in my life again, I want to keep you here.” He stormed out, slamming the door closed behind him.

Hump Day H00k #HDH

Hi all! Another week's come and gone, and we're back to Hump Day Hook where authors share snippets from their stories. :)
Today I'm giving you another peek into a work in progress tentatively titled Wild West Island Getaway. It's planned to be the third full length story in the Double D Ranch Tales series. We're planning (hoping to get out) a novella before this story, too. Leading up to this paragraph, the gang is vacationing on the family estate in Grand Cayman. Cassie and Dak have been fighting for months now, and she's glad her friend's finally arrived on the island so she can have some girl talk. One afternoon, Dak's storms into their bungalow having heard rumors that she and Bristol are fooling around with the cabanna boy, Damian. Cassie and Dak pick up their argument again... It's more than a paragraph because the lines of dialogue are short and quick to read. Enjoy!

* He folded his arms in front of him. “How am I making it sound?”
* Why does he have to bait me? Well, he’s asking for it. “That I dropped my shorts, we jumped into bed and fucked.”
* His jaw dropped and eyes widened. “Do you always have to be so crass?”
* “Do you always have to behave like a big child or caveman?”
* He growled low in his throat. “You know I hate being called that.”
* “You know I hate being called woman when there’s a my or your or little before it.” If she could have breathed fire and incinerated him, she would have. Dakota being reduced to a pile of ashes would solve so many problems.

Decadent's Reader for a Reader & B00ks Bl0g H0p ( @decadentpub #SO )

* Las Vegas… I love setting stories in the city. It’s such a diverse place—lots to do and see on the strip and off. My second sunset story for the 1NS series, Sunset Seduction, takes place in a hotel room in Las Vegas. The characters have a view of the city and mountains and both take note of the setting sun. I describe the sunset’s colors as the sun settles and dips behind the western range, setting the scene for romance. Then there’s part of the story where they’re at a window. Down on the valley floor are the twinkling golden lights.
* The next two sunset books (Sunset Temptations & Sunset Heat) in the works will be set up on Mt. Charleston. But for now, here’s the info on Sunset Seduction
* One evening. One date. Easy right?
* Heather Tramonto, a business woman with only her career and a quickie on her mind, is all set for her 1NS date and a bit of adult fun–no conditions, no commitment–when a surprise shows up at her door.
* Lane Stanwyck is entering the dating world after years of an estranged marriage and the passing of his hostile wife. When Madame Eve schedules an anonymous tryst for him–no conditions, no commitment–he believes it to be the perfect arrangement for his first time out in the dating field in ages. That is until he sees the woman of his dreams.
* One night. No strings. That might be a problem for this pair.
* Aside from my love of sunsets, there’s another reason ‘sunset’ is used in the titles for the stories I’m writing, but you’ll have to read them to find out what it is. ;)
* In participation of Decadent's giveaway, an e-book copy of Sunset Seduction is offered along with the other books.

Black Friday Bl0g H0p ( #DecadentBFHop @decadentpub #FF )

* The Beauty and Romance of a Sunset...
* Sunsets. Viewing them is a simple pleasure of mine. The phenomena are such a beauty to behold and so varied in their coloring depending upon location, season, and atmospheric conditions. It’s due to living in Las Vegas that spurred on my love of sunsets. [See, it’s not all about the strip and gambling! ;)] I’ve seen some spectacular ones with gorgeous fiery reds, oranges, and yellows or amethyst and fuchsia to name a few.
* In the summer of 2008 I went on my first cruise. We stopped at ports in Cozumel and Grand Cayman. It was so nice enjoying the beauty of the water, the beaches and the sunsets, especially since we live hours from an ocean beach in a desert area. One late afternoon we were hanging out on a patio just off one of the ship’s dining rooms and experienced a beautiful golden sunset.
* Did you know that there is a little place called Hell on Grand Cayman? In Hell you’ll find a group of short, black, limestone formations roughly the size of half a soccer field. There are two viewing platforms for tourists since people aren’t allowed to traverse in the area. It’s claimed that the name derived from the fact that if a pebble is thrown out into the formation, it echoes amongst the limestone peaks and valleys and sounds as if the pebble is falling all the way down to hell. But I digress… We spent the bulk of our time on Seven Mile beach and had food and drinks at a little bar/restaurant. The open air, pub-style beach bar reminded me of a Southern-style wraparound porch except this place had a tin roof. The experience of the cruise and visiting Grand Cayman inspired me to write a few stories, including my first Decadent Publishing 1NS release Sunset Desires.
* Sunset Desires ~ A blind date. A hot tropical evening. She’ll be someone he can’t forget. He’ll fulfill her ultimate fantasy.
* Back to Las Vegas… I love setting stories in the city, not just because I live here but also because, like sunsets, it’s such a diverse place—lots to do and see on the strip and off. My next sunset story, Sunset Seduction, takes place in a hotel room in Las Vegas. The characters have a view of the city and mountains and both take note of the setting sun. I describe the sunset’s colors as the sun settles and dips behind the western range, setting the scene for romance. And, the cover—done in the spirit of the story, sunsets and the exciting city of Las Vegas—is hot!
* Sunset Seduction ~ One evening. One date. Easy right?

She’d flown in with her cousins, whom she’d just vacationed with in Grand Cayman, using Las Vegas as a quick stopover before heading back to New York City. Her main reason for being in the Entertainment Capital of the World would happen soon. Her date. God forbid it didn’t live up to her expectations.

For the third time in two minutes, she breathed deep to a count of ten and released the air even slower in an attempt to calm her nerves. Why anxiousness settled within her, she had no clue. She’d been on a blind date before, had several one-night stands, too. Granted, not quite like the one soon to happen but still.
